  • Trio of New Motorola ROKRs Emerge

Motorola’s trying real hard to get the ball rolling, as today it added three brand new phones to its MOTOROKR series. Each phone represents a different style in order to appeal to every group of multimedia-savvy consumers. EM30 Candybar Features a FM radio along with media player, 2 MP camera, 3.5 mm jack, text-to-speech recognition, microSD external [...]
  • Motorola adds EM25, EM28, and EM30 to ROKR series

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE Moving just a tad downmarket from the mighty morphin' E8 , Moto has rolled out three new members of its music-centric ROKR series today: the EM25 slider, EM28 flip, and EM30 candybar. The EM30 probably feels the most familiar, aping the E8's design language but trashing the touch-sensitive wheel for a plain ol' d-pad. It does, however, carry over the E8's so-called ModeShift morphing keypad and features an FM radio with RDS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Windows Media compatibility. The EM28 brings the same style to a clamshell, while the EM25 reps the slider form factor. We're seeing some shots of a T-Mobile branded EM30 in here, too, so it looks like the carrier wants something to slot in right below the E8 in its Moto lineup -- a wise move, considering the E8's considerable expense. Look for the EM30 to launch first in Taiwan (sorry, T-Mob) followed by other markets later in the quarter, while the EM25 and EM28 should launch on a more global scale in the coming weeks. • Nokia unleashes Supernova series: meet the 7210, 7310, 7510, and 7610

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM , EDGE Though they've already been well documented (heck, they're already on sale in some parts of the world), Nokia's just now getting around to making its foursome of Supernovas official. The new line reps mid-range fashion (think L'Amour, but not over the top) and comes in your choice of two candybars, a flip, or a slider as the 7210, 7310, 7510, or 7610, respectively. The 7210 features a tri-band GSM radio plus EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, and an FM radio; look for it to launch in the third quarter for €120 (about $189). The 7310 apes the 7210's look but adds support for changeable Xpress-On faceplates, TV-out, and support for GSM 850, and while all that extra kit adds €35 (about $55) to the price over the lesser model, it's available now. The 7510 goes for the flip form factor but carries over most of the 7310's spec sheet, waiting it out until the fourth quarter for a €180 (about $283) launch in scary colors like "Fatal Red". Finally, the 7610 (no, not that one) moves up to a beefier 3.2 megapixel camera and hits next quarter for €225 (about $354). • T-Mobile's entire 3G lineup gets handled

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Samsung , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , UMTS T-Mobile's still doing its darndest to keep its fragmented 3G network launch on the DL -- the carrier can't deliver a wide footprint just yet, and it look like it doesn't want to put customers under the false impression that it can. A great way to make sure no one cares about your high-speed handsets is to make sure they're all totally anonymous, low- to midrange devices with minimum shelf appeal, and what can we say, T-Mobile? Mission accomplished! PC Magazine has devoted some quality time to checking out all four of the 3G models currently offered -- the 3555 and 6263 from Nokia along with the t819 and t639 from Samsung -- and it looks like they've managed to develop a really potent power user repellent with the lineup. The 6263 scrapes by with the most generous review of the review, but even it is hampered by a lack of HSDPA (meaning 3G data's capped at a theoretical 384kbps) and a measly 1.3 megapixel camera. Clearly, T-Mobile wants these phones viewed in exactly the same light as the remainder of its consumer-class models, and we'll give 'em that much, they've done a bang-up job in that regard. Maybe too good, in fact. Read - Nokia 3555 Read - Samsung t819 Read - Nokia 6263 Read - Samsung t639 Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • SoftBank announces Summer 2008 collection

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Panasonic , NEC , Sharp , GSM , HSDPA , UMTS , Softbank Mobile , Toshiba If you're noticing a trend in Softbank Mobile's latest lineup, you're not alone. With the exception of a single device -- the PANTONE Slide 825SH from Sharp -- every single device here is a flip, although the Panasonic 921P rocks a dual pivot to make the one-seg viewing even more enjoyable. Here's a quick rundown of what we've got: Sharp 923SH. Huge 3.3-inch WVGA display with AQUOS branding. Early July launch. The Premium Waterproof 824SH from Sharp. Alleged to be the world's thinnest waterproof phone with a 15.3mm metal body. Early July launch. Panasonic Tropical 823P. We're not sure where the "Tropical" comes into play here, but it's waterproof. Late June launch. Sharp PANTONE Slide 825SH. Integrated motion sensors and a choice of eight colors are all well and good, but we think the 825SH's real selling point here is that it's the only slide in a sea of flips. Early July launch. NEC 821N. It's got a "cute incoming light," according to the translated press release, and that's good enough for us. Early July launch. Panasonic Mirror II 824P. It's alleged that the 824P's glossy surface changes color when you look at it from different angles, though it's the WQVGA display that we'd probably be spending most of our time ogling. Early August launch. Toshiba 824T. This one is targeted at women, according to Softbank, with a jewel-like surface and color options to match. Early September launch (so much for the "Summer" part of "Summer collection" on that one, we guess). NEC 821N GLAMOROUS. This extra-fancy version of the 821N is being launched in collaboration with GLAMOROUS Magazine, featuring custom designed shells, themes, wallpapers, and ringtones. Launches September 6. NEC 820N. A stainless steel 11.7mm body should be enough to sell this one to a few souls; one...
  • Nokia 7510, 7610 to round out Supernova series

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM , EDGE It turns out the Supernova from Nokia isn't a single phone, but rather a whole line of new midrange Series 40 handsets targeted squarely at women -- though we've gotta be honest, we could see a whole host of men putting these beauties in their pockets, too. Details on Nokia's Polish site appeared recently (notice the past tense; they were taken down shortly thereafter) talking about 7510 and 7610 models, adding clamshell and slider form factors alongside the recently-retailed 7310 candybar. The 7510 includes a 2 megapixel lens while the 7610 upgrades to 3.2, but otherwise, both models are alike in their microSD slots, QVGA displays, and pursuits of a lazy 2.5G lifestyle. Since Nokia's regional sites already seem to have these suckers preloaded and ready for a switch to be flipped somewhere, we'd be shocked if they weren't officially announced any day now. • Details emerge on T-Mobile's upcoming Samsung and Nokia releases

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Samsung , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE We're still kinda weirded out by that figure of six-frickin'-teen new handsets for T-Mob between now and August, but details on five of those alleged sixteen is a solid start. Boy Genius Report has scored internal release information on three Nokias and two well-known Samsungs, the t229 and t339 . Starting with the Sammies, the t229 will be launching in red (and red only) to shore up the low end with what seems to be a VGA camera, Bluetooth, and not much else, while the t339 will offer WiFi for HotSpot@Home compatibility and a 1.3 megapixel cam; both will be available in June. On the Nokia side, the XpressMusic 5610 slider (which we've seen in T-Mobile trim courtesy of the FCC) will be joining the just-announced 5310 , though the carrier has yet to determine a launch window for this one. The forgettable 2760 clam launches on June 16 -- nothing more to be said about that one -- and finally, the 6301 with WiFi gets real on June 23. We're holding out for the new Shadows , but yeah, it seems like a fun time to be a T-Mobile customer -- particularly if you're into the UMA stuff. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Another three Samsungs break cover at Dutch event

They're not as exciting, notable, or lustworthy as the first three , but alas -- they're Samsungs and they're new, so we figure they deserve at least some modicum of coverage. The M620 slider mopes along with a triband, GPRS-only radio and VGA camera -- the very definition of "blah" in our books -- but does manage to offer an integrated FM radio and stereo Bluetooth. If that earth-shattering feature set is just a little too fancy for your tastes but you're still looking for a fresh Sammy slider, turn your attention downmarket to the B510, which eschews a camera altogether but still manages to offer Bluetooth 1.2 and an FM radio. Finally, the B300 flip (pictured) knocks it all the way down to dual band (read: don't even think about using it in North America) and, like the B510, leaves the camera out of the equation. No word on release dates for the trio, but we think we can take a pretty good stab at pricing -- think "cheap." Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T release dates through May (hint: no Vu)

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , Motorola , Samsung , Sony Ericsson , UTStarcom , ATT , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We've just received a fresh round of release dates on AT&T, and if we had to pick a single word to describe the theme here, it'd be "colors." Shades upon shades of phones -- both new and old -- will see a release on AT&T in the next couple of months, starting with the Sony Ericsson Z750a , the first 3G Sony Ericsson to be released by a carrier in the States (but not in North America -- that honor belongs to Rogers ); it'll hit in your choice of gray, pink, or purple in early April. Like the a737 , the a437 gets done up in a whole spectrum -- gray, gold, and red, to be specific -- come mid April, alongside the workhorse Motorola V3xx in lavender, pink, gray, platinum, and red (noticing a trend with this whole gray thing?). It looks like the V3xx releases will be spaced out over a few weeks, for whatever reason, tapering off by the end of May. The now-ancient UTStarcom 5700 finally sees release toward the end of April more than a year after we first saw it in the FCC's business, giving a lower-end choice to the Windows Mobile faithful. Finally, May should bring about the LG CU720 Shine in black, following its initial offerings of silver and red. Oh, and it looks like the Motorola Z9 and the black Centro should be widely available pretty much any minute now -- stay tuned. Strangely missing from the list is the Vu , though that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be released by the end of May, it merely means that AT&T's not sure yet. Surprise, surprise. • A look at AT&T's pipeline, early March 2008 edition

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Nokia , Pantech , Sony Ericsson , ATT , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We've already mentioned that the LG Vu is looking solid for a late March release after being held up (or so they say, anyway) to work through a few MediaFLO issues; we've now received independent confirmation that it's true -- assuming no more issues arise, of course -- but that's not all. No, far from it, in fact. The Sony Ericsson Z750 is apparently inbound for a release within two weeks, and along with the rugged Motorola W760 "Hurricane" (pictured), that should close out AT&T's March docket. Moving on to April and beyond, the Pantech "Breeze" is expected some time next month, but don't get too excited -- it's an entry level flip that should move out the door free on contract. The Motorola Z9 slider should lackadaisically stroll into stores in late April, and finally, we've heard that the Nokia N95 has been approved by the carrier's powers that be (!!!) and should be available in the second quarter; no word on whether it's the standard N95 or the N95 8GB , though. How about an N96 with MediaFLO while you're at it, guys? [Thanks, Kal] Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Vodafone continues self-branding tradition with 227 and 228

Filed under: Handsets , Others , Vodafone , GSM These two bad boys aren't about to turn any heads, but hey, that's not exactly what they were designed to do. Like self-branded Vodafone handsets of days gone by , the 227 and 228 from Vodafone are intended to fill in the lower end of Vodafone's expansive lineup (if you can really drop a smartphone down into that category, anyway) while name-brand devices occupy every other nook and cranny. To give you an idea of just how low end these particular suckers are, Vodafone's product pages list "color display" as the only feature of the models other than the form factors themselves. On the upside, they're free on contract and are available now on some of Vodafone's European networks, so we guess we don't have a lot of room to complain. • Samsung's F480 Prada (without the Prada), Dual Touch Chic G400 flip and F400 B&O slider

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung If mobile-review is right, then Samsung is about to unleash more than a dozen new phones at Mobile World Congress. Rather than overwhelm you with the lot, we've whittled down the selection to a few of our faves. First up, the F480 (pictured left) which casts aside its Armani rags for full-on Samsung branding. The 11.5-mm slim handset with 2.8-inch, 240 x 320 touchscreen features Samsung's latest Croix OS with tactile feedback. It's now sporting 3G connectivity, FM-radio, and the ever so popular 5 megapixel camera (with LED flash). Release is expected in April or May for between €350 and €400. Next up is Sammy's "Dual Touch Chic" G400 flip. Both the internal (2.2-inches, QVGA) and external displays are touch-sensitive surrounded by an all-metal shell. Expect a 5 megapixel camera, FM-radio, and 100MB with microSD expansion when it launches in by May for about €300. Last up is the latest B&O hookup , albeit in a more consumer acceptable slider format. Like the i450 before it, the F400 is a dual-slider: slide the front face up to reveal a keypad, down to slip the phone into music mode with exposed B&O speakers. Otherwise, it's a 3G phone with 2.2-inch QVGA display, RDS-enabled FM radio, and microSD card when it pops in late March with a €370-€390 price tag.
