  • Nokia USA taking names for N79 and N85

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian Whoa, whoa! Calm down just a second there, buddy, we didn't say they're shipping -- they're not -- but keep your chin up, because they're getting close. To prove it, Nokia USA has started taking pre-orders for North American versions of its lovely N79 and N85 superphones. No estimated shipping date is showing up just yet, but we're assured that they "get it first, so you get it first" -- bold words for a direct retailer that frequently gets beaten by third-party distributors with the hot new models. We'll see. [Via Symbian-Guru ] Nokia USA taking names for N79 and N85 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 09:39:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . • Nokia rolls deep on the cheap, cooks up six models

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM Looking through the pictures here, you might not suspect that the sticker prices for these bad boys range from just €90 ($117) all the way down to a jaw-droppingly low €25 (about $32), but they do, which raises a question: why must they be targeting emerging markets alone? Nokia has a history of going after emerging economies with the occasional barrage of models , and the latest round ups the game with features we'd be totally cool with seeing on your average "mature market" handset -- goodies like integrated flashlights, sturdy lanyards, and a vaguely-defined "Nokia Life Tools" service that delivers relevant information in a graphical interface to phones via SMS (the logic being that GPRS isn't always available where these phones are going to be used). The most expensive device of the lot will be the 5130 XpressMusic, the first music-centric Nokia destined for low-income areas of the world with an integrated FM radio, 2-megapixel cam, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Next up we've got the fancy 7100 Supernova, joining Nokia's fashion-friendly line in a couple tasty colors with a 1.3-megapixel cam. If we skip all the way to the bottom, we have the lowly 1202, a rugged-looking little monochrome beast with an extended battery, a five-user phonebook to make it easy to pass around the whole family, and extra-loud ringtones -- and at 25 euros, it's Nokia's lowest-cost phone ever. Why do we want one really badly? Are we crazy? Look for all six of these to start filtering around the globe between now and early 2009. Innovation! …If these images are to be believed (via Engadget / Symbian Freak) Which one will you have? I quite like the slider one… (Thanks Mark)

  • Samsung officially unveils Beat s and Beat b musicphones

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , GSM , EDGE Lowish-end tunes are the name of the game with Samsung's latest pair, the M3200 "Beat s" slider (pictured) and M3510 "Beat b" candybar. The Beat b you may remember from IFA , offering EDGE data, 2-megapixel camera, and FM radio all packed into a 9.9mm body. The Beat s, meanwhile, goes just a tiny bit upmarket with an integrated Bang & Olufsen-sourced ICEpower audio processor. Both phones feature 3.5mm headphone jacks, stereo Bluetooth, and something Samsung calls "Motion Play," which smacks of Sony Ericsson's Shake control by letting you knock your phone around in various ways to start playback, change tracks, or mute the sound. Both models will be available this month. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung intros twelve (yes, twelve) phones at IFA

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS IFA typically isn't considered the strongest show in the mobile world, which Samsung apparently saw as an opportunity to grab just a little more spotlight than it'd normally have. Okay, maybe "a little more spotlight" is an understatement, seeing how it trotted out no fewer than a dozen handsets at the show -- and granted, none of them are groundbreaking taken alone, but the collective ends up making for a mighty showing. Highlights include the S7330 slider, featuring a Soul -like display in the d-pad; the rumored D980 DUOS which adds an extra SIM slot to the F480's design language ; the music-centric M3510 Beat; and this here beast of a phone, the B2700 , looking like it's more than ready to take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Overall, we would've liked to have seen a little more high-end fare in the mix, but we'll take it. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung Messager goes after LG Rumor crowd

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , CDMA You don't see terribly many low-cost horizontal slider dumbphones from Samsung, and that's left the market wide open for LG with its Rumor and Scoop -- until now, that is. Meet the Messager, a candybar whose sole reason for being is making your texting life a little easier thanks to a QWERTY keyboard that slides out to the side. The 1xRTT data (yipes!) and 1.3-megapixel sensor aren't going to bake any noodles, but at $199 with no contract whatsoever, there's not a lot of room for bellyaching, especially when you throw in A2DP and a microSD slot. Just a hint, though, Samsung: any phone + pretty colors = $$$. Seriously. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Trio of New Motorola ROKRs Emerge

Motorola’s trying real hard to get the ball rolling, as today it added three brand new phones to its MOTOROKR series. Each phone represents a different style in order to appeal to every group of multimedia-savvy consumers. EM30 Candybar Features a FM radio along with media player, 2 MP camera, 3.5 mm jack, text-to-speech recognition, microSD external [...]
  • Motorola adds EM25, EM28, and EM30 to ROKR series

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE Moving just a tad downmarket from the mighty morphin' E8 , Moto has rolled out three new members of its music-centric ROKR series today: the EM25 slider, EM28 flip, and EM30 candybar. The EM30 probably feels the most familiar, aping the E8's design language but trashing the touch-sensitive wheel for a plain ol' d-pad. It does, however, carry over the E8's so-called ModeShift morphing keypad and features an FM radio with RDS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Windows Media compatibility. The EM28 brings the same style to a clamshell, while the EM25 reps the slider form factor. We're seeing some shots of a T-Mobile branded EM30 in here, too, so it looks like the carrier wants something to slot in right below the E8 in its Moto lineup -- a wise move, considering the E8's considerable expense. Look for the EM30 to launch first in Taiwan (sorry, T-Mob) followed by other markets later in the quarter, while the EM25 and EM28 should launch on a more global scale in the coming weeks. • Nokia unleashes Supernova series: meet the 7210, 7310, 7510, and 7610

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM , EDGE Though they've already been well documented (heck, they're already on sale in some parts of the world), Nokia's just now getting around to making its foursome of Supernovas official. The new line reps mid-range fashion (think L'Amour, but not over the top) and comes in your choice of two candybars, a flip, or a slider as the 7210, 7310, 7510, or 7610, respectively. The 7210 features a tri-band GSM radio plus EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, and an FM radio; look for it to launch in the third quarter for €120 (about $189). The 7310 apes the 7210's look but adds support for changeable Xpress-On faceplates, TV-out, and support for GSM 850, and while all that extra kit adds €35 (about $55) to the price over the lesser model, it's available now. The 7510 goes for the flip form factor but carries over most of the 7310's spec sheet, waiting it out until the fourth quarter for a €180 (about $283) launch in scary colors like "Fatal Red". Finally, the 7610 (no, not that one) moves up to a beefier 3.2 megapixel camera and hits next quarter for €225 (about $354). • Samsung intros the snoozefest J800 Luxe and L700 cellphones

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Symbian , HSDPA It looks like the folks at Samsung are keeping the fires burning with a batch of new handsets announced at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition. First on the block is the 3G, J800 Luxe slider, a mid-range phone with a 2.2-inch 176 x 200 display, two megapixel camera, FM tuner, A2DP support, and a slot for microSD cards. The electronics-maker is also offering the L700, a fairly unexciting candybar with a 2.1-inch screen, HSDPA, a choice of colors (pink, silver, and gold), and pretty much all the other features listed for the previous phone. The most interesting offering from this set is the Symbian-based L870 that we've seen previously , which the company claims is still on target for its August release. No word on pricing or release dates for the two new models, however. [Thanks, Craig] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • LG throws India a three-pack of new models

Filed under: Handsets , LG , GSM From the very low to the relatively high end, three new models LG's unleashed on its Indian customers this month run the full range of price points while still managing to pack in music playback across the board. Starting on the bottom, the KP110 is a member of LG's Bullet series (we're not seeing the resemblance to an actual munition, but whatevs) and is being targeted squarely at first-time phone buyers with a microSD slot and FM radio headlining the feature list. Next, the Dynamite KP320's actually a heck of a phone -- 3.2 autofocus megapixels worth, to be exact -- with TV out and A2DP to boot. Rounding out the launches in LG's global KF510 fashion slider with a 3 megapixel cam and a pair of color choices. Look for the three to run Rs. 2,899, 7,990, and 12,250 (about $69, $190, and $291) respectively. [Via Unwired View ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
