  • Samsung's winter lineup for the US gets dolled up for the camera

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Alltel , ATT , T-Mobile , Verizon Wireless , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA We know about most of these handsets, but it's always fun to get a few final views before they're officially announced and made available, isn't it? phoneArena has what must be the complete (or close to it) lineup from Samsung for the US market in the next few months all in one place, showing the a777 and a867 Eternity for AT&T, the Behold for T-Mobile, and the i770 Saga , i910 Omnia , and u810 Reknown for Verizon. New here is the R600 Hue II for Alltel, a boring-ass little flip that should be available in a handful of colors. There are a couple goodies in here -- the a867, i770, and i910 should all get some blood flowing, depending on how you roll. Which one's your favorite? • Best Buy nabs exclusive on Verizon Blitz Titanium

Filed under: Handsets , UTStarcom , Verizon Wireless , CDMA If you're not cool with the Blitz's original blue -- well, first of all: hater. Secondly, plan on trotting out to your friendly local big box come this Sunday, October 26 for the release of Verizon's baby QWERTY set in "titanium," which is an uppity word for gray. No word on pricing yet, but we're thinking it won't break the bank. [Thanks, Carter] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Alltel shows its love for smooth jazz, oldies with LG Rhythm

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Alltel , EV-DO , CDMA We're always pleasantly surprised to see a carrier beat the rumored release date for a phone, and that's certainly happened here with the LG Rhythm, a phone we'd heard would bow in the middle of next month. The trick slider features a secondary touch-sensitive display in the center of the d-pad -- not a feature you see every day -- and has an integrated FM transmitter, 3.5mm headphone jack, 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and a graphic equalizer personally tuned by none other than Mark Levinson himself, making this one hell of a little music phone. It launches today in black and white for $119.99 after rebate on contract. Read - Rhythm (white) Read - Rhythm (black) Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • US Cellular getting LG Rhythm: think Chocolate with a cyclops eye (updated)

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Alltel , CDMA , US Cellular We've learned that mega-regional US Cellular has its sights set on an LG slider apparently dubbed the UX585 "Rhythm" for a mid-November launch, featuring a 1.3-megapixel camera, FM transmitter a la Nokia N78 and LG Muziq , and an honest-to-goodness mechanical wheel -- a key feature for a phone touting a music slant. The theme doesn't stop there, though: the Rhythm is also said to benefit from tweaking by Mark Levinson's loving ears, a QVGA display, and something being called a "Touch Music Hot Key," a trick-looking circular touchscreen in the middle of the wheel. Yeah, these guys might be a little behind the Chocolate curve here, but at least they're coming out swinging. Look for it to run $129.95 featuring a $50 rebate for customers signing up for a data plan for at least three months. [Thanks, USCCGuy] Updated: Turns out Alltel snuck this out onto the market just this week in black and white as the AX585 , and seeing how they're spelling it "Rhythm," we're updating the spelling for US Cellular's version, too (let's be honest -- "Rythm" would be an incredibly annoying trademarkable spelling for that word). Alltel's charging $119.99 on contract after rebates for the pleasure. Thanks, Jer! Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Virgin Shuttle hands-on

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Others , Virgin Mobile , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA As 3G sliders go, the Shuttle won't rank terribly high on anyone's hot list, but as Virgin Mobile handsets go, specifically -- well, the Shuttle is pure gold. We toyed with it a bit at CTIA, and yeah, okay, it's not going to blow any minds. But if we put on our prepaid hats for just a moment, we can see how this is exactly what the doctor ordered: it's definitely the best-looking and feeling handset in Virgin's lineup, and at the same time, it doesn't come close to encroaching on Helio's higher-end territory. Granted, the 3G support doesn't mean terribly much considering the small screen (and we dare not mention "Virgin" and "tether" in the same sentence), so the Shuttle's gonna have to push units on the strength of its strapping good looks and support for Buddy Beacon. We think it'll manage. Gallery: Virgin Shuttle hands-on Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Virgin launches Shuttle, boldly goes where no Virgin handset has gone before

Filed under: Handsets , UTStarcom , Virgin Mobile , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA We don't like the obvious pun any more than the next guy, but in the case of Virgin Mobile USA's Shuttle, we've got to admit: the spacecraft analogies are totally appropriate. First off, it's unusually sleek (dare we say attractive?) for a Virgin set -- but far more importantly, it marks the MVNO's very first foray into the crazy, fast-paced world of EV-DO-based 3G, a nod to the fact that it'd probably like to close the gap a bit with its Helio division . Speaking of Helio, the PCD -sourced offers Helio's Buddy Beacon service and also serves up a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, expandable memory, and a 2-inch screen for watching girls with blonde hair blowing in the breeze. It'll be available exclusively through Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile starting September 28. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung Messager goes after LG Rumor crowd

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , CDMA You don't see terribly many low-cost horizontal slider dumbphones from Samsung, and that's left the market wide open for LG with its Rumor and Scoop -- until now, that is. Meet the Messager, a candybar whose sole reason for being is making your texting life a little easier thanks to a QWERTY keyboard that slides out to the side. The 1xRTT data (yipes!) and 1.3-megapixel sensor aren't going to bake any noodles, but at $199 with no contract whatsoever, there's not a lot of room for bellyaching, especially when you throw in A2DP and a microSD slot. Just a hint, though, Samsung: any phone + pretty colors = $$$. Seriously. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Verizon shows Blitz

Filed under: Handsets , UTStarcom , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Remember this? Yep, it popped up a while back as the uncreatively-named UTStarcom TXT8010, but never managed to launch on any US carrier -- a shame, considering the low price point (theoretically, anyway) and the somewhat trick look and form factor. It's all good, though, because Verizon has picked it up as the "Blitz" with a Wal-Mart launch on August 8 followed by Best Buy on September 28. Its main lease in life will be as an INpulse prepaid 'set -- so you know it'll be nice and cheap -- but it's still going to manage to eke out VCAST Music support, a microSD slot with support up to 4GB, stereo Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel cam, and VZ Navigator. And what's this, a default Verizon UI in orange? Are our weary eyes deceiving us? Gallery: Verizon shows Blitz Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • They're no Ocean 2, but Helio busts out White Mysto and Red Heat

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Helio , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA Just because Virgin's scooping up Helio doesn't necessarily mean the product parade needs to stop (not to say it was moving at anything more than a glacial pace to begin with), and to that end, the MVNO has just released its Mysto and Heat models in white and red, respectively. The creatively-named White Mysto and Red Heat are initially available exclusively to the Korean community -- a strategy Helio has used before -- and there's no word on if or when they'll be outed on a wider scale. We would've preferred an Ocean 2 release here, but at the very least, you've got to admit that these new colors suit 'em well. [Via Heliocity ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Nokia gets fancy for CDMA with 3608, 8208

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , EV-DO , CDMA Who would've thought that Nokia's first Series 40 dual slider would be for CDMA networks? Well, not so fast -- these two aren't exactly Series 40, it seems. Nokia hasn't announced either the 3608 flip or 8208 dual slider officially, but official specs and pictures have popped up on an Espoo-owned domain that reveal the China-bound handsets to operate on CDMA 800 / 1900, and in the case of the 8208, we can say with certainty that there's EV-DO Rev. A on board. Anyway, as we were saying, Nokia lists both as having "Series 40 Nokia like UIs," with "like" being the key word there; we suspect these are either still being manufactured for Nokia by a third party, Series 40 can't rock CDMA in its current incarnation, or a little bit of both. Trust us, though, Nokia -- that doesn't mean you shouldn't take these cute little guys global. [Via MobileBurn, here and here ] Read - Nokia 3608 Read - Nokia 8208 Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Bell finally launches LG Vantage

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Bell Mobility , EV-DO , CDMA Your yank friends south of the border know this one better as the Glimmer for Alltel (and soon for US Cellular ), but you Bell customers out there in Canada are finding this one in stores now as the Vantage . The Shine-esque slider stakes most of its reputation on a full touchscreen to augment the numeric keypad, but you also get EV-DO, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, and up to 4GB of expansion via microSD. Just be sure to bring your wallet, and preferably those of a couple friends: contract-free it'll run you $424.95 CAD (about $418), while a full three years of servitude gets that knocked down to a more palatable $199.95 CAD ($195). • LG's Decoy gets priced, set for June 16th release

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Seems that rumored June release window for LG's VX8610 ( Decoy ) was right on. phoneArena has it that the peculiar slider will be launching just over a fortnight from now on June 16th, and if you're looking to get one with a 2-year contract, the pricing isn't so bad ($179). It also mentions a $249 post-rebate price with a 1-year agreement and a $349 sticker if you aren't signing any dotted line other than the credit card receipt. Guess it's wait-and-see from here, yeah?
