  • Iron Man contest winner announced!

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Announcements After weeks of hand-wringing, we've finally settled on a winner of our contest for LG's uber-limited $1,500 Iron Man edition Shine ! We asked you to send in pictures of the busted-up pieces of garbage you call "phones," and holy cow, did we get some doozies. Without further adieu, our winner, Mark H., comes to us from Novato, California. Here's his story: "I need a new phone as you can see. I have had this Nokia phone since 2001. I'm in the military service and my friends make fun of my old phone and now they're really on me since my phone was run over by a car and I use electrical tape to keep the faceplate together. I don't get payed enough by the service to buy a nice new phone." Congratulations, Mark! Even if this relic were in perfect condition, it'd still be time for an upgrade. Let's try to keep this one a little less scuffed, because that solid gold battery cover definitely does not live up to the "Iron Man" name. Follow the break for some honorable mentions -- you guys made it really hard to choose! Continue reading Iron Man contest winner announced! Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Engadget Mobile, LG, and Stark Industries want you to have a $1,500 Iron Man phone

Filed under: Handsets , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Announcements If ever there were an LG Shine to live up to its lofty name, this would definitely be it. We'd like to introduce you to the Iron Man phone -- presented here by our boy Robert Downey, Jr. -- based on the Shine slider as sold by AT&T. Unlike the garden-variety Shine, the Iron Man edition trades up to a deep red case with gold plated highlights and a solid 18K gold battery cover to commemorate the launch of the film in style. That's plenty enough element 79 to give this thing some serious heft. We're not bragging, though -- we want you to have it. The phone is valued at a princely $1,500; twenty are being given away by LG directly -- we've got the twenty first. How do you pry it out of our hands? Easy: we want to see just how nasty, disgusting, and close to complete breakdown your current face candy is. Send us a pic and tell us a little bit about your poor, dilapidated phone and the long journey it's taken to its current state of disrepair. We'll pick the saddest entry and let you retire that terrible thing for something just a little flashier. One word of advice though: don't bother breaking your phone or taking a photo of your dad's Dynatac or something, that's not what we're looking for. Check out the gallery to see shots of the very Iron Man phone that could be yours, and don't forget to enter. Good luck! The rules (yeah, there are always rules) Send us your original photo. If we find your picture elsewhere on the internet, you will so be disqualified. Don't test us here, we've seen every picture of every phone. Ever. Email submissions to contests [at] engadget [dawt] com with the subject "I am Iron Man!" And for the love of our inbox, please keep your images 1MB or under, ok? You may only enter this contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. Contest is open to anyone...
  • Samsung launches the "MiniSkirt Season 2" lineup - Samsung SCH-C225/ SPH-C2005/ SPH-C2255

Samsung has announced that their new Samsung "MiniSkirt Season 2" offerings. No, Samsung is not getting into the reality TV game, they're promoting their new lineup of chick-friendly slider phones. The new handsets are being offered as the successors to the original Samsung MiniSkirt handset. After shipping 1 million MiniSkirts, it makes sense for Samsung [...]
  • Motorola Z9 outed by FCC

Motorola's been slow on their roll to launch the Motorola Z9, but with a bit of luck, we could see Motorola launching the MOTO Z9 at CTIA Las Vegas. The prospect of a launch is made all the more likely with the FCC's recent blessing of the Motorola Z9 slider. It's seems like we've been talking [...]
  • Samsung launches the Samsung SGH-F490

Samsung’s been movin’ and shakin’ to show of their TV’s, DVD players, and home theater what-nots during CES 2008 Las Vegas, but they hadn’t really done anything new in the mobile space. That is, until today. Samsung used this last day of CES to bring the Samsung SGH-F490 to reality. You may remember this iPhone-esque handset’s sibling, the Samsung F700 Croix that we mentioned a few times previously . With a 3.2 touchscreen display (with that pseudo-haptic feedback setup), 5 megapixel camera, 130MB on board storage, and 3.5mm headphone jack, the Samsung SGH-F490 is no slouch in the performance department. Unfortunately, it will be a slouch in the connectivity department - with a lowly tri-band GSM/EDGE (850/1800/1900Mhz) radio and HSDPA in the Euro-only (2100Mhz) band we’re going to have a hard time bringing the Samsung F490 into the mainstream US market. Thankfully, the Samsung F490 is outfitted with the company’s award-winning Croix interface - but we’re not sure if the F490 uses that fake haptic feedback system on the Samsung F700. We’d like a more accurate feedback system that actuates vibrations or clicks under the position of input or contact, rather than having the entire backside of the device vibrating in response to on-screen inputs. Look for this 115mm x 53.5mm x 11.8mm (4.5″ x 2.1 x .5″) device to launch in February for around €530 (about $780). • Motorola Z10 hands-on from CES 2008 Las Vegas

We’ve known about it for some time now . We’ve been waiting for it to drop. Motorola just made it official . And, now we had a chance to play with the Motorola Z10. Unfortunately, it turns out that the Z10 display units that we had a chance to test at the Motorola booth were still prototypes. We’ll talk more about what that means in a bit. For now we’re going to give you a bit of insight into the Motorola Z10 user experience. Overall, the Moto Z10 is a striking piece of RAZR-esque design that is both bold and sleek at the same time. The handset’s lines are essentially the same as Motorola’s Z8 slide-phone - with the same “slide and bend” design. Keep reading for the rest of the goods… Buttons feel nice and rubbery with a satisfying tactile response. Dedicated music controls and camera buttons make it as easy to capture your memorable moments with the photo and video camera as it is to kick back and listen to some tunes. And, as Dusan mentioned previously , this Z8 successor bumps up the camera image-sensor pixel count to 3.2 megapixels, up from the Z8’s 2 million pixels. Pictures are sharp and clear with virtually no shutter lag - and the camera has a “multi-shot” feature that allows you to take 3, 5, or 12 pictures in sequence. However, likely owing to the fact that the Z10 we played with was a prototype (production units were said to be available at the end of the Q1 2008), video recording on the handset was unacceptably sub-par. Video seemed to be recording at something like 10-15fps - not what we expected from the Z10. Overall, the MOTORIZR Z10 is a slick piece. We weren’t able to test out the 3G HSDPA and full HTML browser, nor the instantaneous video broadcasting, but those are some pretty trick features that are sure to appeal to a lot of people. Oh, and don’t forget the 3.5mm headphone jack - Sony Ericsson always does . Here’s the Motorola Z10 video recording sample. Recording...
  • Sprint unveils Samsung m520 slider

When we hear of a new Samsung slider being unveiled, we usually think along the lines of the thinnest and sleekest handsets on the market. The new Samsung m520 for Sprint doesn’t really fit our expectations. The 13mm thick Samsung m520 slider features stereo Bluetooth, EVDO, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, and some GPS capabilities - not exactly run-of-the-mill but not mind-blowingly awesome either. We know this thinnish slider will be hitting Sprint’s network soon, but a solid release date isn’t yet available. The Samsung m520 is already rocking on Qwest’s airwaves for $90 after contract signing and rebates, so a similar price point on Sprint would make sense. • Mark Levinson lends his name to the LG LB3300 - LG's Rhapsody in Music for audiophiles

Wannabe audiophiles will be happy to hear that Mark Levinson has lent his name to the new LG Rhapsody in Music slider phone - known as the LG LB3300 - for the South Korean masses. We say “wannabe” because there no amount of fancy branding or gadgetry that can bring audiophile-quality sound to a handset. But hey, if South Koreans want to think a Mark Levinson-branded phone will give them hi-fi sound quality, let them spend their money. That being said, the LG LB3300 boasts an impressive facade, adorned with an LED-backlight touch-sensitive wheel, 1GB of onboard storage (with up to 4GB of expandable memory), 2 megapixel camera, terrestrial DMB, and Bluetooth with A2DP that can steam to two listeners simultaneously. We like the look of the handset, but we can’t imagine that a fairly run-of-the-mill music-phone it worth the extra Won to be associated with Mark Levinson’s name. • Samsung introduce sleek new Samsung F250 slider

We love Samsung’s slider-phone offerings - they’re just so darn sleek and sophisticated. And, it looks like Samsung has introduced yet another super-slick slider on their Russian site. The Samsung F250 is an all-black slider with external music controls on its front-face, owing to its musicphone roots. Samsung’s penchant for mirror-finishes and sleek lines (like those on the F330 and U700 ) have made their way into this mid-range sliding musicphone. As a music-centric handset, the Samsung F250 rocks a FM radio, microSD card slot, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and those front-mounted music-controls. As a competent slider-phone, the F250 packs in a 2-inch display, 1.3 megapixel camera, and tri-band (90/1800/1900Mhz) GSM radio (obviously not intended for the US market) in a 94 x 46 x 17.5 mm package that tips the scales at a slight 96 g. Unfortunately, 3G isn’t in the cards for this mid-ranger, but we’re loving the look of the Samsung F250 enough to forgive its absence. Fans of this sleek slider will be able to grab their very own Samsung F250 for somewhere around $275 - although, you’ll have to pay for it in Rubles. • Verizon LG Venus details

If one of Verizon’s hottest handsets for this year is the LG Voyager , then the other badass on Verizon’s list is the LG Venus . With a dual-screen slider setup - one for seeing and one for touching - the LG Venus is definitely one unique slider. Phone Arena got their hands on some more details about the LG Venus, and they’re looking good. The LG Venus rocks the same 2 inch, 320×240 pixel QVGA upper display as the LG VX8550 Chocolate, and supplements it with a 1.49 inch, 176×240 pixel touchscreen below it. The lower-screen serves as an “interactive menu” that replaces the LG Chocolate’s scroll wheel, and serves up task-specific icons to help you navigate through the phone’s functions. And, the music-centric LG Venus rocks a 2.0 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Speakerphone, 3G (EVDO of course), and microSDHC card slot. We also know that the LG Venus will be taller and wider than the LG Chocolate, but it’ll be thankfully slimmer. The dual-screened slider will come in your choice of Pink or Black and comes with an 800 mAh battery, AC charger, carrying pouch, USB 2.0 cable, and VCAST Music setup cd. If the LG Venus tickles your fancy, expect to pony up $199 (after 2-year contract and $50 rebate) for a November 8 pre-order, with shipping set for November 19. • Samsung SGH-T729 blasts-off on T-mobile's network as the Samsung "Blast"

There isn’t anything exciting, or unexpected , about the newest Samsung slider to hit T-mobile’s network. Well, except for the name. The Samsung SGH-T729 will be offered to T-mo customers as the Samsung “Blast.” With a name like that, you’d expect some pretty nifty features, but aside from the SureType keypad (a semi-QWERTY keypad with two letters on each key) the 1.3 megapixel camera and EDGE-toting Samsung Blast is a middle-of-the-road slider from Sammy. Although, the integrated email support and pay-per-email message pricing schedule earn this thing some bonus points. The myFaves-compatible Samsung Blast has the requisite microSD card slot, MP3 player and stereo Bluetooth features that we all expect from a media-oriented mid-ranger - with the $99 price-tag to match (two-year sentence contract required, of course). • Samsung SGH-i570 Symbian smartphone pictures and details leaked!

Samsung sure does love them some sliders. It seems every other phone coming out of the South Korean manufacturer’s factories are in slider form-factor. The recently leaked pics and deets of the Samsung SGH-i570 show a slider-phone with a full QWERTY keyboard hidden under a svelte and sleek 96×90x16mm body. How does the handset manufacturing giant continually push out new handsets? Well, part innovation, party recycling. The i570 seems to be a variant of the Samsung SGH-i620 slider that should be hitting European shores within the next couple months. And, as such, the i570 sports a similar feature-set - 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, 160MB onboard storage, WiFi, HSDPA, Bluetooth, and (if you look closely) a front-facing video conferencing camera. But, unlike it’s i620 brethren, the i570 will be packing Symbian 9.1, as opposed to Windows Mobile. The tri-band GSM and single-band UMTS/HSDPA radio keep the Samsung i570 from playing nice with US-frequencies, but it’s still a great piece of eye-candy. Pricing and availability is unknown, we’ll keep you updated! Keep reading for more pics!
