  • Sony Ericsson C905a with AT&T firmware means... well, you know

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS That "more bars in more places" startup sequence there look familiar? We're not rocket scientists, granted, but first of all, we have no idea what rocket science has to do with the mobile phone industry. Secondly, seeing a carrier-branded firmware show up on a hot new (and somewhat unexpected) model is bound to get some gears turning. The whole K850 debacle reminds us that a branded device can go all the way up to the last minute and still get tossed to the wayside -- and there's certainly precedent for such a tragic fate to happen to a Sony Ericsson, specifically -- but we can't help but let our minds wander to the possibilities of an 8-megapixel beast like the C905 landing on AT&T in the near future. Some lucky cat was offering a US-friendly C905a model for sale (don't bother logging into eBay, it's already been snatched up) allegedly burned with an AT&T ROM, suggesting that they're either looking into offering it or, at the very least, Sony Ericsson was pitching it to the boys and girls in Atlanta. If it's still getting tossed around, let us just voice our opinion here: yes, AT&T. Do it. • Samsung a777 now available from AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Well, this is certainly shaping up to be an exciting week of launches for the orange and blue, isn't it? The colorful a777 from Samsung has now launched on AT&T, coming in four action-packed colors (though we're only seeing red and blue available on the carrier's website at the moment) and featuring 3G, a 1.3-megapixel camera, AT&T Navigator, and that awesome Video Share service that everyone uses. It's running $79.99 on contract after rebate, which seems a tad steep for a middling slider with a crappy cam, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it run on a holiday special or something before too long. • Samsung's winter lineup for the US gets dolled up for the camera

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Alltel , ATT , T-Mobile , Verizon Wireless , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA We know about most of these handsets, but it's always fun to get a few final views before they're officially announced and made available, isn't it? phoneArena has what must be the complete (or close to it) lineup from Samsung for the US market in the next few months all in one place, showing the a777 and a867 Eternity for AT&T, the Behold for T-Mobile, and the i770 Saga , i910 Omnia , and u810 Reknown for Verizon. New here is the R600 Hue II for Alltel, a boring-ass little flip that should be available in a handful of colors. There are a couple goodies in here -- the a867, i770, and i910 should all get some blood flowing, depending on how you roll. Which one's your favorite? • Samsung a777 breaks cover for AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS It's getting harder by the second for a midrange Samsung slider to look different from the four hundred others, but we've got to say, this here a777 isn't half-bad looking. Images of the AT&T-bound phone are starting to pop up around the interwebs, showing a stylish shell that'll be available in four colors -- blue, red, orange, and green -- not unlike its a737 cousin. We don't have it pegged to a release date yet, but if we know cellphones -- and we think we do -- we certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it come about before the holidays at a sub-$100 price point. • AT&T Quickfire launching November 10

Filed under: Handsets , UTStarcom , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS One of the more interesting devices to hit AT&T's lineup in recent memory -- the PCD -sourced Quickfire -- is getting ready to hit in the next few days, making good on a promise to deliver the 3G Sidekick killer in November. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the Quickfire really is a Sidekick killer, but we'll all have an opportunity to find out come November 10 when it launches in three colors for $99 on contract. If you're feeling crazy enough to bypass the commitment, you can pick one up without signing your life away for $299, which still isn't that bad considering that you're getting a touchscreen, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and HSDPA. • Samsung's a767 Propel now available on AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , ATT , GSM , EDGE , UMTS Part of its huge fall QWERTY blitz , AT&T has now released the Samsung Propel in four fresh 'n fruity colors. Your hard-earned $79.99 will buy you a 1.3-megapixel camera, UMTS (no mention of HSDPA in the specs), AT&T Navigator and Video Share support, and a full sliding keyboard that should keep your numeric keypad friends on the defensive during a heated SMS exchange. Of course, that $79.99 is an on-contract price -- but if you're down, the Propel can be all yours starting today. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • LG bringing Secret, mid-range slider to AT&T?

Filed under: Handsets , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We've heard some rumblings that AT&T was keen on picking up the Secret to shore up its high-end featurephone lineup, and that's being corroborated by what other sites are hearing as well -- all told, that leaves LG in a pretty enviable position with the 800-pound gorilla of the US GSM market, presumably launching the sexy (well, arguably sexy) Incite smartphone alongside one of the smartest-looking 5-megapixel handsets in the market today. The Secret clone, model number CF750, should apparently feature the same high-end cam, thin shell, 3G, and touchscreen as its European brother, simply swapping bands to make the package a little more palatable to a North American audience. Moving downmarket a little bit, the CF360 looks to be a lower-end piece that'll do duty in AT&T's rank-and-file lineup -- in other words, it'll basically print money. We're cool with all this, but seriously, guys, can we tighten up the European to North American technology transfer just a little bit? No? Too much to ask? • LG "Xenon" to bring high-speed data (and texting) to AT&T?

Filed under: Handsets , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS That Knick isn't even out yet, and it looks like AT&T might already be gearing up to stuff a competitor right alongside it in the lineup. Boy Genius Report is showing a picture (possibly a rendering -- hard to tell) of a reasonably-spec'd QWERTY slider dumbphone from LG dubbed "Xenon" that is claimed to be wrapping up testing as we speak in preparation for a holiday launch. Rumored goodies include dualband HSDPA, a 2.8-inch QVGA display, 3-megapixel cam with VGA video recording, microSD expansion, and WiFi -- so needless to say, we're not really seeing a free-on-contract future for 'er. • Nokia 6650, Sony Ericsson W760a, others coming to AT&T in coming weeks

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Nokia , Pantech , Samsung , ATT , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS So we've gotten a little more clarity on the situation with AT&T's next round of releases since we reported on pricing earlier today , and in a nutshell, things are looking up -- it's already mid-September, and it turns out that every single one of the phones we mentioned is scheduled to ship before the end of October. Specifically, the cheapo Samsung a637 should hit any minute now, followed by the Motorola V9x and the Nokia 6650 toward the end of this month; the Sony Ericsson W760a and Pantech C740 Matrix , meanwhile, are the stragglers of the bunch with releases planned for late October. Let's see how closely they can hold to this, shall we? [Thanks, Kal] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Upcoming AT&T phones get priced

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Nokia , Pantech , Samsung , Sony Ericsson , ATT , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS It's always a good sign when rumored handsets get slapped with price tags, because that means that releases are right around the corner, too -- usually, anyhow. To that end, AT&T's latest stock information indicates that the S60-powered Nokia 6650 will run $129.99 in your choice of red or silver, as will the Sony Ericsson W760a ; the Samsung a637 will be coming in for $49.99, so we're expecting some pretty low-end stuff there; the Pantech C740 "Matrix" is priced at $79.99, and finally, the Motorola V9x we found out about way back in early July is checking in at a princely $199.99. All prices are after rebate, too, so we wouldn't expect any miraculous deals on these -- at least for the first few weeks. [Thanks, Kal] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Nokia 2680 slide garners FCC attention in AT&T trim

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , ATT , GSM , EDGE Who knew that AT&T's customer base constituted an "emerging market"? Certainly not us, but Nokia's 2680 slide -- a phone Nokia itself said was targeted at so-called "replacement buyers" in emerging markets -- has just been spotted all up in the FCC's business bearing an AT&T logo front and center (well, actually, it's toward the bottom, but you get our drift). It includes an FM radio, MP3 ringtone support, a low-end cam, and an unsubsidized price of €75 (about $114), so we suspect this'll likely find a home on GoPhone. If it does end up on the postpaid roster, though, expect it be about as close to free as they come. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Iron Man contest winner announced!

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Announcements After weeks of hand-wringing, we've finally settled on a winner of our contest for LG's uber-limited $1,500 Iron Man edition Shine ! We asked you to send in pictures of the busted-up pieces of garbage you call "phones," and holy cow, did we get some doozies. Without further adieu, our winner, Mark H., comes to us from Novato, California. Here's his story: "I need a new phone as you can see. I have had this Nokia phone since 2001. I'm in the military service and my friends make fun of my old phone and now they're really on me since my phone was run over by a car and I use electrical tape to keep the faceplate together. I don't get payed enough by the service to buy a nice new phone." Congratulations, Mark! Even if this relic were in perfect condition, it'd still be time for an upgrade. Let's try to keep this one a little less scuffed, because that solid gold battery cover definitely does not live up to the "Iron Man" name. Follow the break for some honorable mentions -- you guys made it really hard to choose! Continue reading Iron Man contest winner announced! Permalink | Email this | Comments
