  • Sprint event showcases CDMA Touch, LG Rumor, and more

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Palm , RIM , Samsung , Sanyo , Sprint-Nextel , Verizon Wireless , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA If you've been patiently awaiting details about, well, a whole slew of handsets, chances are that a recent Sprint event held the answers to a-many of those very questions. First up was the Palm Centro (also coined Gandolf and Treo 800 ), which you've already seen plenty of earlier today . Moving on, the Sprint Touch (read: CDMA ) was said to be rockin' a potent 400MHz CPU, and it also touted EV-DO, 128MB of RAM, a two-megapixel camera, built-in GPS "to be activated in a Rev A upgrade," and a likely launch date in November. Furthermore, an EV-DO BlackBerry Pearl was on display along with a "petite candybar" from Sanyo, the sliding LG Rumor, and the Sprint Airave home cell site (once known as the Samsung Ubicell ). We know you're craving the dirt on all of the aforementioned gizmos, so be sure and hit the read link for the full skinny. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Verizon's roadmap for remainder of '07 gets liberated

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Motorola , Others , Palm , Samsung , UTStarcom , Verizon Wireless , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA phoneArena scored a wealth -- nay, a veritable cornucopia of information detailing Verizon's releases for the rest of 2007, and we can say with some confidence that there's something in here for everyone. Starting with smartphones, SMT5800 , XV6800 , Samsung i760 , and Motorola Q9m should hit in October, October, September, and August (yay, this month!) respectively. A second, business oriented variant of the Q9, dubbed the Q9c, will follow on in the fourth quarter. If Windows Mobile ain't your cup of tea, have a gander at the Palm Treo 755p and RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 (pictured), both coming in November. There isn't much to say about the 755p that hasn't already been said, but the 8130 is indeed a Pearl of the "new" variety , upping the cam to 2 megapixels while adding A2DP and a 3.5mm jack. Turning to dumbphones, Verizon's got the full spread from low to high end. The Samsung U410, self-branded CDM-8630 and LG VX8350 all appear to be pretty simple flips coming some time this half of the year. The Motorola Z6c looks to be a MediaFLO-less version of the Z6tv slider; the former drops in November while the latter is nebulously scheduled for the second half. Finally, the fancy U700 and U900 flips from Samsung offer 2 and 3 megapixel cams, respectively, and will both be available before the year's out. Whew! • Up close and personal with the LG VX8550

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Now that the successor to LG's Chocolate line has been available to Verizon Wireless customers, we thought it would only be fitting to put the latest addition through the paces and see if the VX8550 is a worthy successor. From a quick glimpse, both the LG VX8500 and the VX8550 both share the slide up form factor both sporting a hidden keypad. LG has moved the camera from the back of the phone on the VX8500 to the back of the slide on the VX8550. This allows for safe storage of the camera when not being used while also decreasing the amount of fingerprints, smudges, and scratches on the lens. There have also been improvements in the keypad including dedicated Send / End keys and a camera button. Like its predecessor, the keys are still mashed together making text messaging somewhat difficult for those with moderately sized fingers. Our sausage-shaped pointers often misspelled words with the cramped styling. Next, the center navigation button has been replaced with an iPod - like click wheel that rotates both forward and reverse along with doubling as a 5-way navigation. We noticed very few accidental key presses while the phone was up to our face. This could be the single greatest improvement on the VX8550 which makes navigation and phone use a breeze. The slide mechanism seems as strong as the previous model with solid open and close motions. LG seems to have one of the best slide mechanisms on a mobile phone ( Samsung , you're a close second). Overall, the VX8550 has a better feeling than it's predecessor but leaves something to be desired for the power user. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Motorola W385, new LG Chocolates live on Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Thinking back to when we first caught wind of it , the turnaround on the ambiguously named VX8550 Chocolate from LG wasn't that bad -- but the same can't be said of Verizon's other retail introduction today, the midrange Motorola W385. This thing's been kicking around as a rumored Big Red device since April at the latest -- and yes, we'll admit that our sense of time is a bit skewed, but that's, like, forever . Anyhoo, pick up the VGA-cam'd, 160 x 128 screen'd W385 for $70 after all the contracts and discounts have been applied; meanwhile, the VX8500 successor can be yours for a nice, round hundie. • Verizon, LG intro new Chocolate

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA We'll spare you the "even sweeter the second time around" punnage that Verizon couldn't help crack and get straight to the point here. Following up its hit VX8500 last year, Verizon has introduced a new Chocolate to its lineup, the aptly-named VX8550 . The re-upped model gets very slightly trimmer by shaving a few hundredths of an inch off every dimension from its predecessor, a new keypad with touch feedback, and something LG is calling "Trace Motion" -- some sort of lighting that works in conjunction with the new nav wheel. Carried over from the original Chocolate are the 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, and wealth of music-related features, though sadly, the rumored 3.5mm jack ain't here. Look for it in stores July 9 in your choice of "Black Cherry" and "Blue Mint." Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Verizon poised to launch LG VX8550?

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA It looks like Verizon and LG are gearing up to release to their latest addition in the Chocolate lineup, the VX8550 . This round, the VX8550 is sportin' two new colors than before -- this time "black cherry" and "blue mint" will make your mouth water, and lets not forgot the traditional black. The device is expected to hit the street around around July 9 and cost $100 with a two year contract. There's even talk about reducing the cost of the music essentials kit that includes a microSD card, data cable, Bluetooth headset, and a gift card for music. Could this be Big Red's attempt to persuade consumers away from AT&T's music phone for their own latest addition? We hope not . • Samsung brings joy of U600 to CDMA world

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Having recently toyed around with a SGH-U600 Ultra II , we can say with confidence that Samsung's gorgeous, high-style, high-function slider is a fabulous reason for the world's CDMA faithful to shed a tear -- or it was a fabulous reason, anyway, for the short time that it was a GSM exclusive. Enter the SCH-C220, SPH-C2200, and SPH-C2250, models for three of Korea's carriers that gladly trade in the U600's radio for CDMA with EV-DO. The cam gets busted down to 2 megapixels from 3.2, but in exchange, you get integrated GPS (a fair trade, we reckon). Other features include 96MB of internal storage, the requisite microSD expansion, and a QVGA display, all packed into a 10.9mm shell decidedly reminiscent of its GSM forebear. If you happen to be in Korea, pick this one up soon for around 500,000 won (about $540). Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • LG SV280, now in green

Filed under: Handsets , LG , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Sorry, it's too easy; we're going to have to skip right past the "it must not be ripe yet" jokes here and play this one straight. The SV280 slider from LG takes a cue from Motorola's Z8 by curving to conform to the user's face when extended; the original was white, and LG's decided green is the way to go for round two. No, it's still not available 'round these parts, but the color's just bizarre enough to make us not sure we care. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • New Chocolate: LG's VX8550 for Verizon comes into view

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Sorry, Shine hopefuls, the VX8700 will have to hold you over for at least a bit longer. After some buzz had suggested that the FCC-outed VX8550 would be a true Shine slider for Verizon, we now have word from sources that it'll actually be a facelift to the year-old VX8500 Chocolate . For what it's worth, the changes are definitely for the better -- we'd dare say LG's been listening to the VX8500's critics -- with properly placed Send / End buttons, Lock switch on the side, and what appears to be a true 3.5mm headphone jack (still an all-too-rare feature on handsets). Some are reporting that the d-pad is considerably easier to use and possibly "used differently" than its predecessor, though what that means remains to be seen. Documents suggest that it'll hit in black, red, and blue, though if the original is any gauge, we can expect a full rainbow of hues hitting over several months. No word on a release date or price, but with press shots in the pipe, we figure it might show up in time to commemorate the VX8500's one-year anniversary. • KDDI pulls a KDDI, shows entire summer lineup at once

Filed under: Handsets , Others , Panasonic , Sanyo , Sony Ericsson , KDDI , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA , Casio , Toshiba We'd be shocked at the rate KDDI churns out new models , but let's be honest -- its domestic competitors manage to stay pretty much in lockstep, and they're all bested by the Keepin' It Real Fake machine that is mainland China. As we might expect from a massive launch on a Japanese carrier, the so-called "Collection 2007 Summer" (that's the "Summer 2007 Collection" for those not accustomed to reading phrases backwards) holds a handful of gems, including some VGA displays and 5 megapixel cams. Let's hop to it, shall we? Sanyo W53SA If you're into phones that look like little tiny quilts, the W53SA should be right up your alley. KDDI appears to be targeting this one squarely at the fairer sex (hence the color palette) with FeliCa support, IPX7-compliant water resistance, 2 megapixel camera, 400 x 240 primary display, and one-seg TV in a 20 millimeter thick shell. An itty bitty OLED display on the front indicates call information; no details on the resolution, but it's good enough to display Japanese characters. Casio W52CA Nothing earth-shattering here, but it still has that "ooh, a Japanese phone we'll never get to play with" mystique to it. The W52CA is actually very similarly spec'd to the previously-mentioned W53SA with a 2 megapixel autofocus cam, 400 x 240 display, one-seg support, microSD expansion, and some manner of water resistance, all at the cost of 21mm of closed thickness. Casio W53CA Now here's where it starts to get interesting. The W53CA is one of the real halo models of KDDI's summer '07 lineup, putting down a killer 5.1 megapixels of snapping power -- hence the Exilim branding -- in a rather comely 18.9mm package. But wait, it gets better: this one also features that crazy 800 x 480 display first seen in KDDI's last batch plus microSD expansion (you need somewhere to throw those 5.1 megapixel pics, right?) and FeliCa. Sony Ericsson W52S...
  • Helio Ocean launches today

Filed under: Handsets , Pantech , Helio , 1xRTT , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA Get ready to spend the weekend mindlessly sliding the Ocean's dual keypads open and closed until you drive friends and family to the brink of insanity (trust us, it's pretty addictive). Yep, that would be this weekend we're talking about -- Helio's new flagship device finally makes its debut on its website and store shelves today for $295, followed by a second wave of availability in a variety of third-party retailers toward the end of this month. Of course, unless you're within driving distance of one of Helio's handful of flagship locations, actually finding one today might be challenging; might we recommend our hands-on to hold you over while you patiently wait for the parcel to make its way to your doorstep? • LG prepping Chocolate successor for Verizon?

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Goodness, has it really been nearly a year since Verizon's VX8500 Chocolate from LG hit streets ? Indeed it has, and by cellphone standards, we reckon that's an eternity; Verizon has managed to keep the line fresh by injecting color after color after color , but sooner or later, you've gotta drop new hardware. That appears to be what we're looking at here, at least in false-colored, rendered form: meet the LG VX8550, a phone whose model name we can only take to mean that a successor to the aforementioned VX8500 is in the works. Details are few and far between -- LG really has this FCC filing locked down -- but we can make out that it'll be a CDMA / EV-DO piece with Bluetooth, and the rendering seems to suggest that it could be a slider, or perhaps a pudgy candybar. We're clueless on a release date for this one, but if Verizon wanted to celebrate the VX8500's anniversary with the VX8550's launch, they'd be looking at late July or early August.
