  • Scruffy Aussie promises boot-strapped Android smartphone by Holidays

Don’t get us wrong. We’re all for entrepreneurs getting their own piece of the pie. But, when an unshaven founder of some under-the-radar consumer electronics manufacturer goes public with an announcement that he’ll be launching an Android OS-based smartphone with little to no outside development help, we can’t help but chuckle. Ruslan Kogan, founder of the [...]
  • Nokia N96 slated for October 1 debut in UK!

Nokia recently announced that they would be launching their Nokia N96 flagship successor alongside the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 businessphones in the third quarter. The Finns made good on their promise to bring the much-anticipated enterprise handsets to market in Q3 2008, so now we turn our attention to Nokia’s new hotness - the [...]

The two largest open-source mobile platform initiatives are swirling up rumors that they’ll be joining forces to combine the Symbian and Android platforms spearheaded by Nokia and Google, respectively. Allegedly informed analysts at J. Gold Associates are claiming that a merger between Nokia and Google could kick off in three to six months, citing both [...]

Marketing and hype are keys to getting the consumer excited about the next big handset. • Adobe Flash Player 10 to bring performance increase to Mac - Adobe preparing to put Flash on iPhone?

Apple and Adobe have been at something of a crossroads for some time now. The clashing of these titans has resulted in Apple refusing to let Adobe bring Flash plug-in support to its iPhone Safari browser. But, that may all change in the near future. First let's explore what Adobe's working on. The new Adobe Flash Player [...]
  • AT&T: Free iPhone WiFi access coming, iPhone Black was a mistake

There are just some things that are too good not to be true. And then there are things that are just too ridiculous to believe. First off, AT&T has released a statement saying that the mention of free AT&T WiFi HotSpot access for iPhone users was "human error." Apparently, some hasty web-head pulled the trigger too [...]
  • Google and NTT DoCoMo confirmed partners, possibly bringing Android handset to Japan

It looks like the deal between Google and NTT DoCoMo to bring added Google-functionality to the carrier’s i-mode internet service has been confirmed by NTT DoCoMo. The partnership would bring pre-installed Google applications to NTT DoCoMo handsets and make it easier for the carrier’s 48 million i-mode customers to make use of apps like Google Maps. We’re also hearing that Google and NTT DoCoMo are in talks to bring an open-source Android-based handset to Japan. Remember, NTT DoCoMo is one of the original members of Google’s Open Handset Alliance, so it makes sense that the carrier is considering releasing an Android-based handset. • Samsung ACE, Samsung M520, and green LG Rumor launch dates

Again , we have some inside information about the upcoming Sprint’s announcements. Before we start rolling, it’s important to note that all prices don’t seem to involve any contracts. They’ll certainly go down with an appropriate plan… Let’s roll: February: The Samsung ACE is coming right on time and will be officially launched on February 17th. Price, as expected, will be $449. At the same time, the carrier will also release the Samsung M520 , the thin slider with built-in GPS receiver and will start selling it for $249. Finally and again on 2/17/2008, the new Sierra Wireless AirCard 597E will git the Sprint’s offering for $329. March: LG Rumor will appear in a new color - green. Price: $279.99. The carrier will also launch Alcatel-Lucent’s secure connection card AL3500. Price: $499.99. There you have it. Nothing too exciting here. I guess we’ll see tons of new products later in the year following the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. • Apple still in talks with China Mobile over iPhone?

What is this? One side of the story claims that negotiations are dead , the other side says that the “rumors” of iPhone-talk breakdowns are just not true. Steve Jobs told CNBC ’s Jim Goldman that Apple is still very interested in bringing the iPhone to China (of course they are, China’s population is huge!), and that r umors of rocky negotiations are just false. Apparently, the extent of Apple and China Mobile’s iPhone-related talks has been limited to a single visit from a lowly China Mobile representative - a marked departure from reports of struggling, ongoing talks. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in China. With China Mobile and China Unicom both being courted by Cupertino, we’ll most likely see a Chinese iPhone soon. • iPhone transmits IMEI number to Apple

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again - we love love us some conspiracy theories. The ‘nets are abuzz with talk about tin-foil hats and the iPhone sending sensitive information to Apple’s servers. You see, the iPhone’s Stocks and Weather apps have been discovered to be sending your iPhone’s IMEI number (your handset’s wireless network serial number), IP address and stock quote preferences to Apple’s Cupertino, CA. servers. The fact that the iPhone is sending your information to Apple is not in question, but the conspiracy-lovers out there are freakin’ out about Apple gathering information for “evil” means - Apple could be conspiring to gather information on iPhone users’ travels, finances, web-surfing habits, etc. Hackers are already working to hack the application in question to send erroneous information back to Apple - in the meantime, some iPhone users out there are simply deleting the Stocks and Weather apps from their iPhones. And just to be clear, Apple has already made sure that you forfeited your right to privacy with their ToS: When you interact with Apple, we may collect personal information relevant to the situation, such as your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, and contact preferences; your credit card information and information about the Apple products you own, such as their serial numbers and date of purchase; and information relating to a support or service issue. Are Apple’s intentions truly “evil?” Or is Apple merely registering their iPhone fleet on providence? We’re not sure - we’ll let the conspiracy nuts hash it out. • Unlocked Apple iPhones working in Hong Kong with non-AT&T SIM cards?

Could this be the first truly unlocked Apple iPhone? We can’t say for sure, but what we do know is that an unlocked iPhone is reported to be available in Hong Kong - and allegedly works with non-AT&T SIM cards on Hong Kong’s HK CSL wireless network. It looks like incoming and outgoing calls are 100% functional, as are the SMS texts and EDGE data connection. What we don’t know is how the iPhone handles Visual VoiceMail (we suspect that Visual Voicemail is a no-go) and the SIM card. But, like all things new and hip, and unlocked Hong Kong iPhone will cost ya - about $2,000 to be more specific (the unlocking service will run $750, but you will need your own iPhone). Now, all we have to go on are these pics that could quite easily be fake, so we’re going to wait to see if this really is the first instance of an iPhone “Holy Grail” - a fully unlocked Apple iPhone. For all we know, these guys could be charging $750 to create a SuperSIM or TurboSIM for you. Hit the vid for a live shot of the Hong Kong iPhone dialing out. • Mysterious Motorola Q's waiting in the wings?

Aside from the features of the Motorola Q9m and Q9h, Motorola’s newly launched Moto Q9 promotional website hints at a couple unannounced Moto Q’s waiting in the wings - literally. Flanking either side of the center-staged Motorola Q9m and Motorola Q9h are two blacked-out silhouettes of what we presume are Motorola Q variants. With the Moto Q9m destined for Verizon (expected August 20 ) as a multimedia-centric Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphone, and the Moto Q9h headed to AT&T (look for an August 24 launch) as an HSDPA 3G variant of the WM6 handset, we can’t imagine what Motorola is hiding - GPS and WiFi? Now that would be cool.
