  • Blackberry 9000 release rumors swirl

    Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT Let's preface this by saying that we honestly have no idea what's going on with the hot BlackBerry 9000 , but Fortune is reporting that it's delayed due to either a) AT&T concerns over call quality; b) AT&T concerns over launching a 3G Blackberry and the 3G iPhone at the same time or; c) or something else entirely. That's news to our homeboy Boy Genius, who thinks Fortune needs to start double-checking its model numbers and code names before it starts rumor-mongering, and points out that he's been on top of power-management-related 9000 delays for a while now. Testy! We're a little more inclined to trust BGR on this stuff -- the man's got a point when he says he's gotten pre-release versions of every RIM device since the Pearl 8100, and if the 9000's faster processor and 3G are indeed causing power problems, he's likely to notice. Let's just hope this all gets sorted soon -- we're ready to move on up.   • BlackBerry 9000/9XXX specs confirmed

    We’ve been waiting on somone to leak some of the juicy details on RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 9000/9XXX iPhone-fighting smartphone, and it looks like the blogosphere’s been blessed with a bit of BlackBerry 9000 news. The BlackBerry 9000 has been speculated to be bringing US 3G support and a powerful processor to the touchscreen-battle, but whispers and hearsay indicate that HSDPA, let alone UMTS, is not in the cards for RIM’s iPhone-fighter. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of processing power this bugger packs. We can tell you that the BlackBerry 9000/9XXX will be rocking a 480 x 320 display and will feature a full-QWERTY keyboard. It’s unclear whether the keyboard will be physical in nature or a touchscreen keyboard (like that on the iPhone). Connectivity will be comprised of a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) radio and 802.11 a/b/g WiFi radio, but, again, 3G isn’t likel - we’d imagine Bluetooth is also packed in there somewhere. The business-end of the BlackBerry 9000, the OS, will get bumped up to OS 4.3.2 - the new OS for virtually all future 8000-series devices. Boy Genius likens the BlackBerry 9000 as the older-brother to the BlackBerry 8320, so expect the “9000″ to sport similar dimensions. Now, the lack of 3G could be a deal killer. The iPhone can get by on the EDGE-only connection because the superb browser combined with an incredible UI and speedy CPU helps it make the most of its non-3G data speeds - we demonstrated that the browser, processor, and UI are the bottleneck, not the data connection . Will the BlackBerry 9000 be able to play on the same level - in terms of usability, web experience, and straight processing power - as the iPhone? Only time will tell. Fortunately, it won’t be long .   • RIM to launch iPhone-fighting BlackBerry 9000/9xxx early next year

    Wait a tick. Didn’t RIM CEO recently bash on the Apple iPhone’s touch-sensitive, virtual keyboard “that’s a real challenge” to use? Well, he did . But that doesn’t mean this latest speculation is any less true. Rumblings from the rumor mill have indicated that RIM is preparing the 9000-series smartphone to give the iPhone a run for its touchscreen-money. Development of the new 9000-series platform will see new hardware and mobile OS (software) coming out of RIM’s R&D labs. According to Carmi Levy, an analyst at AR Communications Inc. , the RIM BlackBerry 9000-series will be “the future of the BlackBerry franchise” - a stark contrast to the company’s traditionally business-oriented roots. “The 9000 is supposed to be a touch-screen device, very similar in form factor to the iPhone,” Levy says. “Which means that it is not an enterprise-friendly device.” RIM’s been branching out into the consumer-market with the recent BlackBerry Curve and Pearl handsets, and it looks like RIM is going to go full-out and take on the iPhone with a media-savvy, touch-based handset of their very own. The 9000-series BlackBerry will reportedly feature a full-face touchscreen and upgraded audio and video playback capabilities to supplement the iconic BlackBerry push-email feature. We’re also expecting US-friendly 3G frequency support and 600Mhz processor to power all those media-intense features. As we expected and mentioned previously, Levy believes that RIM will be launching the 9000-series BlackBerry in Q1 2008. The rest of RIM’s BlackBerry lineup will still see updates (like the 3G EVDO Pearl that recently hit CDMA carriers in the US), and a RIM VP stated that the company will be releasing 4 or 5 new smartphones for 2008.   • RIM prepping 3G, iPhone-fighting BlackBerry 9000/9xxx?

    RIM is really on a roll recently. They’ve been pumping out handsets faster than ever , and it looks like RIM’s next big handset will aim at Apple’s iPhone. It makes sense, since every phone manufacturer out there is gunning to, well, out-gun the iPhone with touchscreen offerings of their own. Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the unfortunately touchscreen-less lineup of BlackBerry smartphones, is reportedly working on a new BlackBerry 9xxx/9000 that takes aim squarely at the iPhone. We’re hearing through the grapevine that RIM’s BlackBerry 9xxx/9000 will be sporting a full-fledged 3G radio with HSDPA (on US-friendly frequencies), 600Mhz processor, and an undeniably iPhone-esque design. As you can see from Boy Genius ’s questionable mockup/blurry spy pic, the BlackBerry 9000 is looking pretty damn slick. We can only guess that the full-body screen will be a touchscreen (if not as the sole means of input, then perhaps with a slide-out keyboard). Oh, and we’re also hearing that the BlackBerry 9xxx will have a backup feature that will move all data on the phone to a removable memory card. With a release date slated for early 2008, we’re sure recent BlackBerry 8800 buyers aren’t none too pleased. But, being firmly planted in speculative soil, BlackBerry 8800 owners can hope that this rumor turns out to be nothing more than that - a rumor. We’re thinking that this BlackBerry 9xxx could indeed be in the works - it makes sense for RIM to go after Apple’s iPhone. Stay tuned!
