  • KTF: No, we’re not making an Android smartphone with NTT DoCoMo

Ah, yes. The Android platform is growing fast. Earlier today we reported that Japan’s NTT DoCoMo and South Korea’s KT Freetel were working jointly to produce their own smartphone with the open-source Android OS. This is very good news for the Android community, but like the time your mother first said she loved you, part [...]
  • White T-Mobile G1 not coming until after Thanksgiving?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android Oh sure, a few remarkably lucky and / or well connected individuals out there are yapping it up on a white T-Mobile G1 right this very moment, but for the bulk of us, coming across one is basically impossible; in fact, the white G1 isn't even listed on T-Mobile's website currently. TMO News has it that the lightest hue of the HTC-built handset isn't expected to ship until at least the US Thanksgiving holiday, meaning that you've still got some serious time to kill before wrapping your paws around the increasingly enviable mobile. Rumors have been rampant that a paint chipping issue is at fault, and while we've yet to hear any confirmation of that, we have seen problems with white paint throw a wrench in the production plans of other mega-corps in the past . There's always the black G1 + Colorware if you're really impatient, you know. • Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots have a little Zune in 'em

Filed under: Windows Mobile Windows Mobile 6.5 was just a whisper on a Motorola phone chief Sanjay Jha's lips two weeks ago, but now that Ballmer himself has confirmed that there's at least one more rev of WinMo 6 en route before Windows Mobile 7 hits it looks like the floodgates have opened -- check out these hot screenshots, one of which seems to have been liberally dipped in Zune sauce. We're hoping that means we'll see some Zune integration with this next generation of handsets, but we're not going to get too worked up yet (cough, Xbox). It does look quite nice, though, and we've got our fingers crossed that this revamp is more than just a pretty new home screen and app launcher -- you're way late to that party , Microsoft. No telling on when 6.5 will actually get here, but Ballms said it'll be sometime next year, so we're guessing we don't have too long to wait. Update: As several of you have pointed out, some of the icons are a little suspicious -- that "Today" icon is OS X's Home icon, for example. We're hoping this is the real deal and not just a user-made skin, but we wouldn't start making any long term plans here. • Apple to sell iPhones through CostCo by January at $149?

The iPhone may have had an astronomical price tag when it started selling in the U.S. over a year ago, but as with all things tech, it will ultimately go down in price. How low is up to Apple and its partners, but would you believe that it could ever go down as cheap as [...]
  • iPhone OS 2.2 coming on November 21st?

While you may still be getting a hang of the iPhone OS 2.1 software update, there’s a rumor right now that the next firmware version refresh might be coming sooner than expected. If all goes as planned, according to an anonymous insider, “The iPhone OS v2.2 will be given in circulation on 21 November ‘08.” Now [...]
  • Verizon to announce $10 Unlimited Web Connect Plan?

Users who use their phones to access the web can’t get enough options these days. Though basically all wireless carriers around the world already have some sort of offer for unlimited web browsing, there are still ways to make them better. Or cheaper. This is exactly what seems to be “new” about a new plan that [...]
  • Not so fast: Android isn't coming to AT&T just yet

Filed under: ATT , Android There's been a flurry of chatter over a rumor that AT&T's Ralph de la Vega , CEO of the company's Mobility and Consumer markets announced that the carrier would be releasing an Android-based phone in the near future. We'd love to be able to confirm that info, but according to an article just published on the San Francisco Chronicle's site, de la Vega has feelings that seem to run quite contrary to the sentiment. According to the paper: "De la Vega said AT&T continues to look at Google's Android operating system but is not prepared to make any moves to carry any Android phones. He said the platform is still evolving and needs to open up even more to offer a wider array of non-Google applications." As much as we want to see this thing happen, it looks like the boys at AT&T aren't feeling Google's insistence on intrinsically linking devices to its web apps. Haven't you heard guys? The future is in the cloud. Oh, and open. • Sony Ericsson has Announcement Planned Tomorrow

We are hearing some grumblings down the pipeline about a confirmed Sony Ericsson announcement tomorrow. It looks to be geared toward the Walkman series, as well as a new accessory called the MBS-900 (bluetooth, perhaps?). While the announcement is confirmed, the news in the rumor mill are that the W705 “Rika” will be announced. Last year on [...]
  • Sony Ericsson event rumored for tomorrow, W705 images emerge

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Oh, goodie! SEMCBlog has it that Sony Ericsson is priming a fall announcement for tomorrow, the 6th of November. Certainly enough, it was this day last year when SE introduced a trio of new handsets , so we'd say the timing sounds just about perfect. Curious as to what's coming? A little birdie has dropped off signs that a W705 (pictured) will be the star of the show, with a Orange-exclusive W705u and a mysterious MBS-900 accessory tagging along. As for February-bound W705 slider, we're told it'll boast a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, 3.2-megapixel camera, 120MB of internal memory, a 4GB M2 card (included), Walkman 3.0 UI, Shake control and two motifs to choose from (Luxury Silver and Passionate Red). All's that needed now is a dash of official and a pinch of expected pricing. • OpenMoko working up Android-based handset?

Filed under: Handsets , Others , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android OpenMoko, the company most famous for its altogether open Neo FreeRunner , is reportedly quite close to kicking out an Android-based handset. Before you get all shocked and appalled, let's look at this rationally. If you'll recall, we actually got wind of such an occurrence way back in April of this year, and some of those very details are jibing nicely with what we're hearing now. Apparently a company dubbed Koolu will be looking to OpenMoko for the design, and we could see a device emerge as early as next month. Initial specs for the elusive mobile include a 400MHz / 500MHz Samsung 2442B CPU, 128MB of SDRAM, a 2.84-inch 640 x 480 resolution touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, aGPS / GPS, inbuilt accelerometer, a pair of "hard" buttons, Bluetooth support, a 2.5mm headphone jack (boo!) and a microSD card slot. Obviously we'll have to wait and see if any of this pans out, but we'll be the first to cross our fingers and hope for yet another Android phone in the mix. • OpenMoko working on Android-based GTA02, for release as early as November

The T-Mobile G1 might be the world’s first open-source Android handset, but it’s definitely not the last. Rumor has it that OpenMoko, another open-source handset maker, is going to hop in on the Android bandwagon as early as November, when it releases its first Android-based product called the GTA02. Details about the Android-powered OpenMoko GTA02 are [...]
  • Motorola VE66 rocks 5MP cam and Wi-Fi, proves Motorola isn’t sleeping

If you thought Motorola would stop at the ZN5’s 5 megapixel camera, just as they did with the original design of the RAZR and its many rip-offs (made by Motorola itself!), well, you, as well as I, are apparently wrong. The latest unofficial Motorola handset to come out of the woodwork is the Motorola VE66, which [...]
