  • Blackberry Bold Delayed in US, Announced in Australia

This weekend Blackberry reported delays for both Rogers and AT&T, and Telstra announced the anticipated launch date on its network. The Rogers delay is rather negligible, as it was delayed from July 25 to July 29, tomorrow’s date. AT&T, on the other hand, was originally expecting the Bold to be released in mid-July, then pushed it [...]
  • Rogers extends $30 data plan to full 3G smartphone range

Filed under: Rogers Wireless Rogers' new $30, 6GB data plan -- unveiled at the collective relief of virtually every would-be Canadian iPhone 3G owner -- is going to end up seeing duty outside the Apple realm. Canada's largest GSM carrier (and only GSM carrier of consequence, really) has mercifully decided to let all devices in its 3G smartphone range in on the $30 party, a range that includes winners like the Nokia N95 , HTC TyTN , and Samsung Jack , among others. Good call, Rogers -- now let's just remove that limited-time offer label and make this a permanent part of your plan menu, shall we? [Via MobileSyrup ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • 3G Rumors: iPhone in Canada Next Month With… Reasonable Rates?!

I’m not going to get off on another Rogers rant here. Suffice it to say, when it comes to Canadian telcos, I’m the rat who, having learned helplessness, now lies face down on the hot plate. However, not content to let me lie there and wither in peace, now comes this report, determined to kick poor [...]
  • LTE gets a boost with GSMA support - 4G is now LTE

The GSM Association is set to push the next-generation Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard into the hearts and minds of people around the world with the association’s recent vote to support the emerging 4G standard as the next step after HSPA. Following on recent successes in LTE’s field-tests and Verizon’s consideration of the technology for their next-gen mobile broadband network, the GSMA has granted the LTE standard an official position as the 4G successor to the 3G HSPA networks currently used by AT&T in the US and Rogers in Canada. This move signifies the GSM industry’s official support of the LTE standard over the UMB and WiMAX standards that are being backed by non-GSM carriers. Rob Conway, CEO of GSMA, has called upon the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to ensure that the industry will win the necessary spectrum to carry out their LTE plans. With the backing of the United Nations’ telecom regulatory body, LTE has a bright future ahead. The GSMA “will work with other companies and organizations developing LTE technology, and start working with the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) initiative.” We should start to see LTE applications pop up around the end of the decade, so we’ve still got a way to go before we see LTE mobile broadband speeds of 100Mbps hit the US. WiMAX could very well have a future in the US’s mobile broadband environment if it gets off the ground before 2009 . Like the saying goes, “first to market, first in your hearts.” Okay, we made that up, but if WiMAX does make it to market before LTE goes online, it could gather enough support to remain viable well into the future - even if it is a 3G technology . • Rogers brings HSPA to 22 Canadian markets

Filed under: Rogers Wireless , HSDPA , UMTS , HSUPA Just about a year after its initial, extremely limited rollout in Ontario and a few months of soft launching across the lands, Rogers has announced that the switch has now officially been flipped on its HSPA hardware in a solid 22 Canadian markets. Cities fortunate enough to make the cut include Vancouver, Winnipeg, Regina, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City among a smattering of others. The carrier's official branding for its 3G services is "Vision" -- a curious homage to Sprint's EV-DO network in the US -- though Rogers gets the crown for the cool factor here thanks to its true video calling capability, the only carrier in North America to offer the feature ( ahem, AT&T? ). Given the fact that Rogers is careful to call the network "HSPA" (as opposed to "HSDPA") we imagine high-speed uploads are in the cards, too. Bonus! • Rogers' HSDPA rollout unofficially plods on

Filed under: Rogers Wireless , HSDPA , Misc While nothing official is on the wires, reports from various sources are popping up with jubilant cries of "HSDPA is here!" If you believe everything you hear (and by that token, what we are hearing) it seems users in Ottawa and London Ontario, Montreal Quebec, plus Edmonton and Calgary Alberta are all seeing that fabulous HSDPA icon on their handsets. Nothing official out of Rogers Corporate yet, but the word is that bigger centers should be up and running by Q1 2008 with general rollout by end of the year.
