  • Nokia N95-3 update released early, performance improved

Filed under: Software , Nokia , Symbian Last week Nokia promised an update was coming to the North American version its venerable N95, the N95-3. But, the company played coy and failed to mention any details other than availability in "early June." We're not even out of May yet but the 20.2.011 firmware update is ready and initial reports are good. Boot time has been reduced to 19-seconds from about 30, camera start-up is now a quite snappy two seconds, support for Flash video has been added, and there's even a suite of new N-Gage game demos included in the deal. That's the sort of update we can sink our teeth into -- even if European N95-1 users have already been chewing it for months. • Nokia N95 8GB nabs new firmware, gets automatic screen rotation

Filed under: Software , Nokia , Symbian The user community already had a number of hacks available for this, but you can't help but get a warm fuzzy every time a manufacturer snatches up cool functionality and bundles it into the official firmware. N95 8GB firmware v20.0.016 is now out and about, offering automatic screen rotation based on the device's in-built accelerometers (why this wasn't functional out of the box is beyond us, considering the requisite hardware was already in place) along with browser and WiFi updates. As always, we suspect this is hitting the Euro-spec N95-2 first -- but we imagine an update for the N95-4 can't be far behind. [Via All About Symbian ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

  • Hands-on with the Nokia N95 8GB for North America!

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS All signs pointed to this sucker existing , and sure enough, here it is. The N95 8GB for North America is pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be -- an exact replica of the European version with the 2100MHz WCDMA radio surgically removed and replaced with an 850 / 1900MHz counterpart for speedy data in these lands. The screen is up to 2.8 inches versus the original N95's 2.6, but the 8GB of internal storage comes at the cost of the microSD slot, so don't get all cocky on us about rocking 16GB of storage in your pocket, alright? Check it in stores this quarter for $749. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia's N95-3 sees first firmware update

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia Version 11.2.009 firmware is out and ready to dance on the North American flavor of the N95. This marks the first update for Nokia's N95-3 . So far, we've found a browser update with font size and history list. We're not expecting the type of overhaul seen for Europe's classic model but we're still digging for more. Anyone else finding fixes for their favorite nits ? If so, let us know in the comments. [Thanks, Alon T.] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia N95-3 with North American 3G now available

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS With nary an AT&T agreement in sight, Nokia has gone out on a limb to launch the unlocked N95-3 today, bringing the all the original N95's goodness back for a second round with a few key changes. Most notably, of course, is the presence of HSDPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, but other modifications include a higher-capacity battery, recessed camera lens (sans protective shutter this time around), twice the RAM, and availability in black and "dark sand" (for the rear only -- the front's always silver). Grab it starting today in Nokia's flagship stores in New York and Chicago for $699. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia N95 for North America: get it September for $699

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Bet you didn't see that coming, did you? The shock of a real, honest-to-goodness N95 with North American 3G bands becoming reality (sorry, T-Mobile, not you!) is still wearing off, and now the company's spouting off about a September release for the darned thing. As we found in our hands-on , this particular variant of the S60 superphone gets tweaked just a bit from the original -- though not as much as the bigger-screened N95 8GB -- offering a redesigned, recessed camera lens (sans protective cover), twice the RAM, dimpled music control keys, and re-upped battery capacity. Nokia claims this very special version of the N95 was made in part because it's been "extremely pleased" with response to the European N95 in these parts -- so to everyone with an N95 in your pocket right now, thanks! As we mentioned, grab it starting next month through a variety of online retailers plus Nokia's flagship stores in New York and Chicago for $699. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia N95 with American 3G gets FCC'd!

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We're speechless. In fact, we think we might cry -- but rest assured, they're tears of joy. Rumors of a Nokia N95 packing American HSDPA have been spreading like wildfire as of late, and we're ecstatic to see that they were totally true. Though this sucker gets down with the 850 and 1900MHz bands, it doesn't get in on the 1700MHz action, suggesting that if the T-Mobile rumor is still true, this ain't it. Though arguably not quite as attractive as the decidedly non-US 8GB N95 in black that we saw this morning, this phone's innards are pretty much the most beautiful thing we've seen all day. Nokia, we turn the floor over to you to answer questions about pricing and availability. [Via Wirelessinfo.com ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
