  • iPhone good for the whole Smartphone market, say Nokia & RIM

Aww, that’s nice. Here we were thinking that the iPhone was stomping all over its rivals with (immaculately fitted, designer) hobnail boots. The truth, according to Nokia and RIM is quite the reverse. Speaking to Macworld, Apple’s two main rivals in the Smartphone market are both relatively sanguine about the iPhone’s success and say that the [...]
  • 3G + N95 + JoikuSpot + WiFi + iPhone = 3G iPhone (the hard way)

Filed under: Software , Nokia , Apple In an unlikeliest of unions since Julia and Lyle, we bring you some hot iPhone on N95 symbiotic action. Using the free JoikuSpot application released this morning, you can now turn any S60 smartphone into a WiFi hotspot. Yes, just like WMWifiRouter does for WinMo devices. Sure, the solution doesn't make much sense from locations with tethered Internet and you can't encrypt the http and https (only) traffic. But if you've ever been in a WiFi dead spot and needed to share access (think PSP gaming), this type of solution is pretty unbeatable. Assuming you have an unlimited data plan that is. • Apple iPhone outsells LG Prada, HTC Touch, Nokia N95 in Europe

If there’s one thing that gets people riled up more than details on how well the iPhone is selling, it’s news that the iPhone is out-selling the Nokia N95 in Europe. The iPhone clearly outsells these handsets in the US, but Europe has been regarded as a reluctant market for the iPhone, given it’s lack of critical hardware features. We previously mentioned that the iPhone has shown disappointing sales figures in the UK, but it seems that even “ laggard ” iPhones sales on UK’s O2 network are still outselling rivals. In fact, all three European markets are reportedly seeing sales of the iPhone outpacing those of its closest, and highly subsidized, competitors - a group that includes the HTC Touch , LG Prada, Nokia N95, and Nokia’s E-Series handsets. Michael Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital, is reporting that iPhone sales in the UK, Germany and France have proven strong. He notes “solid European iPhone momentum,” adding that the “iPhone appears to be an early hit with European Smartphone consumers.” Despite selling only 10,000 iPhones on launch day , many of T-Mobile’s 700 German retail stores are reporting 15-20 iPhone sales per week. France’s Orange Wireless, by far the iPhone’s strongest EU market , has reported that approximately 63,000 customers have registered their interest in the iPhone, with reports of some Orange stores running out of iPhone-stock. Most notably, and sure to draw the ire of Nokia fans (especially those with Nokia N95’s - the author excluded), the iPhone has been outselling the feature-packed Nokia N95 in Europe - which has sold 1 million handsets since its launch in March (not a sluggish seller, to be sure). Keep in mind that the iPhone is still only available in three European markets (at least officially) and has largely been sold on-contract and locked to a particular carrier. All these factors led Mr. Abramsky to raise his previous forecast for Apple to...
  • Sony Ericsson’s P1i reviewed and it ‘doesn’t make the grade’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv1iG5ett84 Channel Five’s The Gadget Show has reviewed Sony Ericsson’s latest smartphone on its WebTV site and the conclusion? It’s not as good as Apple’s iPhone or Nokia’s N95. The reviewer, John Bentley, said he had hoped the P1i would be a good alternative to the other two now ubiquitous handsets but he was sadly disappointed. He liked [...]
  • Apple iPhone bests Nokia N95, HTC Touch in usability study

So, there’s this Texas-based usability consulting firm called Perceptive Sciences. They just released the results of a test that put the Apple iPhone heads-up with the Nokia N95 and HTC Touch in a usability battle. The winner? Apple iPhone. The results are sure to rile up the iPhone-haters out there, but the results speak for themselves. Perceptive Sciences conducted the test with only 10 participants. The subjects had never used the iPhone, N95, or Touch and were asked to make a phone call, set the phone to vibrate, add a number to the contacts list, take a picture, and send an email. Scientists recorded how long it took to complete each task and ranked each trial with a score between 1 and 5. The iPhone earned a score of 4.6, the HTC Touch nabbed a 3.6, while the Nokia N95 only got a 3.2. Testers were [typically] about twice as fast doing specific tasks on the iPhone, which is pretty remarkable,” said senior research scientist Tom Thornton. It should be noted that the iPhone trumped the N95 in all categories except “functionality.” With GPS, 3G, and a 5megapixel camera, we’re not surprised. Got something to say about this test? • iPhone trumps HTC Touch, N95 in usability study

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Nokia , Symbian , Windows Mobile , Studies , Apple , OS X We've given you your chance to choose a champion amongst the iPhone, HTC Touch and LG Prada, and while the latter wasn't included at LG's request, the other two were recently pit against Nokia's N95 in a study of usability . The test was reportedly conducted by Perceptive Sciences, a Texas-based usability consulting firm, and relied on data from just ten individuals who had "never used any of the three devices." The group was asked to "perform a series of tasks on each handset with quantifiable results, such as the time needed to find and use the on / off switch," and when all was said and done, the iPhone managed to snag the gold. Of course, we wouldn't take these results to be the bonafide truth, but if you're interested in seeing what all the mobiles (and guinea pigs) went through before a winner was chosen, head on over to the read link. • Cnet puts the Nokia N95 and Apple iPhone in the ring - gloves off, fight on!

There have been a slew of Apple iPhone vs. Nokia N95 comparos in the past weeks, nay months. Who could forget our very own Stefan’s hilarious “I’m an Apple iPhone” mock commercials (if you haven’t seen the entire series, check it out now ). Both phones are the pride and joy of their respective companies, so hype and buzz are basically a requisite when mentioning either the iPhone or N95, but which one is right for you? Cnet’s iPhone v N95 match-up seeks to answer just that question - the gloves come off for this one. • Apple iPhone web-apps run on Nokia phones too!

In an interesting twist of mobile phone irony, it seems that Nokia phones are able to run the iPhone-only web-apps that are designed to work only on the iPhone’s Safari browser. You see, the Nokia Series 60 browser uses the same base code as the Mobile Safari browser. So, where’s the twist of irony? Well, it seems that iPhone web-apps will not only run on the iPhone, but on the arch-rival Nokia N95. Not to mention that the interoperability of these web-apps should spur even more iPhone web-apps based on previously developed Series 60 apps. We think the fact that two blood-enemies like the iPhone and N95 can share such similar roots (cough…kinda like religion…cough). Now, seeing as how our apps can play nice, can’t all iPhone and N95 users just get along? Oh, and world peace would be nice. Steve Jobs in an interview with Reuters following Apple’s first quarter earnings call dismissed his company’s plans to offer a subscription music service, even though record labels have been putting pressure on Apple to launch a competitive offering to Rhapsody and Napster. “Never say never, but customers don’t seem to be interested in it…The subscription model [...]
