  • Alltel adds the Motorola VE20

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Alltel , EV-DO , CDMA Alltel isn't typically the first US carrier to release much of anything, with the notable exception of Glimmer . That's alright -- coming it at number five, they probably don't have quite the sway with manufacturers that a Verizon or a Sprint does, for example -- and that'll all change soon enough anyway once the Verizon acquisition goes through. In the meantime, though, Alltel's following Sprint in its release of Motorola's VE20 , a midrange flip with an outer touchscreen, 2-megapixel cam, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It'll be available starting this Thursday for $99.99 with contract and rebate in navy and licorice, but if you're dying to get a head start, you can go ahead and preorder now. • Sprint outs Motorola i365 and V950 with Samsung M220, M320 -- no Touch Diamond yet

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Samsung , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Even though all signs are pointing to a release later this month, we'll admit -- we were still secretly hoping that the rumored September 2 date would somehow magically hold for Sprint's release of the Touch Diamond . Even so, the carrier is reeling in some decent -- if not totally expected -- booty today in the form of the Motorola i365 and Renegade V950 alongside Samsung's M220 and M320 flips. The i365 becomes the baddest-ass phone in Sprint's iDEN arsenal, sporting what they call a "monolith form factor" (badass speak for "candybar," we think), mil-spec everything, and GPS. As Direct Connect goes, the V950 is pretty much everything the i365 is not, eschewing iDEN for QChat and offering all the creature comforts of a modern featurephone -- music player, camera, external controls, and a pair of decent displays for starters -- and although Sprint calls this one "ultra-rugged" as well, we don't think we could heave it against a wall quite as many times as we could the i365. From Samsung, the M220 and M320 are simple 1xRTT flips with essentially the same specs as one another, though the M320 tacks on a VGA camera (so in other words, it really may as well not have a camera, either). All four handsets are available now. Read - Samsung M220, M320 Read - Motorola i365 Read - Motorola Renegade V950 Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola's Blaze ZN4 and Rapture VU30 in the wild

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Hey, Verizon customers, you're feeling a little warm to the touch over there. Could it be that you have -- be still our hearts! -- Motorola fever ? As Motos go, Verizon's currently signed up to get two of the hotter upcoming models in the next few weeks, the ZN4 Blaze and the VU30 Rapture , both of which have been spied in the wild once more (looking basically ready for retail launch this time around, may we add). The VU30 is a fashion flip that takes some cues from its GSM-based U9 cousin featuring a glossy translucent shell, fat external display, and according to the latest rumors , a September 9 release date. The Blaze meanwhile looks more or less the same as the last time we saw it, leaving us to wonder what possessed Motorola to keep rolling with that eyesore of a giant, red-ringed medallion on the hinged lid. It's also rumored for a September date with destiny, though the exact day is unclear at this point -- and honestly, Motorola, if you want to push that back a month or two to make the badge less obnoxious, be our guest. • Fun facts about Motorola's VU30 for Verizon emerge

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Far be it from Verizon to get left out of Motorola's RAZR-ish evolution recently observed in Sprint's VE20 , the VU30 Rapture (no relation to the LG Vu -- trust us) should be hitting Big Red next month according to the latest data we've got on hand . The wait's always excruciating, we know, but phoneArena's picked up a few juicy bits of the user's manual for us all to chew on in the meanwhile. Looking over the documentation, it really is striking to see just how much the VU30 shares in common with its Sprint contemporary: a touch-sensitive external display for music controls, 2-megapixel camera, EV-DO, and a curvy shape that somehow manages to evoke the RAZRs of old without prompting us to gouge our eyes out, for example. • Sprint prepping Motorola i365, Renegade, and a pair of Samsungs

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Samsung , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Okay, Samsung, we get it: you're really good at pounding out the cheap clamshells. Point taken. Oh, what's that, you say? You still feel like you have something to prove? Oh, well then by all means, dump another couple $20 flips on Sprint! Please, we insist. As expected , it looks like we'll all have the fabulous opportunity to pick up our choice of the M220 or M320 for $19.99 come September 2, offering Bluetooth, speakerphone, and in the case of the M320, a VGA camera. Out of the Moto camp, we get the i365 ruggedized brickphone for iDEN fanboys and fangirls -- you know who you are, so stop looking around -- which will run $90 and include Bluetooth despite its early-90s appeal. Finally, the most exciting of the foursome has to be the V950 Renegade , but excitement comes at a cost: $199.99, to be exact. In this case, your pair of Benjamins is going to net you QChat capability, Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, and external music controls, which makes it just about the coolest Direct Connect phone going. Line starts over here, folks. [Thanks, anonymous tipster] Gallery: Sprint prepping Motorola i365, Renegade, and a pair of Samsungs Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola MOTORAZR VE20 hands-on

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Motorola , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA We're going to confess a dirty little secret here: when we first started playing with the VE20 , we didn't realize it was being branded and marketed as a RAZR. As we used it, though, it quickly became evident -- no one had to tell us this was a kindred spirit of the V3 . For better or worse, the shape of the phone -- everything from the tapered upper edge of the display to the "chin" beneath the keypad -- looks and feels like an obvious evolution. You might call it a stepping stone in between the V3 and the V9 , and considering that the V3 gets closer to its last breath on store shelves with each passing day (or so we hope), Moto and Sprint need something to slot in there beneath the mighty RAZR 2. Call us insane, but for what the VE20 is, we liked it. It doesn't pretend to be a do-all, end-all superphone, nor does it try to wow you with its premium materials; it's just a decent midrange flip with what seems to be excellent build quality. The screen is exceptionally bright, clear, and rich, and the V9-aping secondary touchscreen is a nice touch (pun intended, of course). One area of concern: it froze up on us once, necessitating a restart, and the music app was completely broken in our tester. Our guess is that this'll be resolved in retail units or via a quick firmware update shortly after launch -- at least, it frigging better be. The VE20 is available today for $99.99 on contract after rebates. Gallery: Motorola MOTORAZR VE20 hands-on Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola V750 Adventure comes to Verizon July 28

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA So how much is it going to cost you to play Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A push-to-talk game this month? $99.99, that's how much -- assuming you take advantage of a two-year contract and a $50 mail-in rebate. Documentation for Motorola's musclebound V750 Adventure suggests that it'll be available to buy in all channels (meaning web, store, telesales -- you name it) on July 28, offering a 2 megapixel cam, microSD slot, VZ Navigator support, and all the walkie talkie action you can handle. We don't know yet whether the G'zOne Boulder will launch on the same day, but if it does, we could have quite a PTT smackdown brewing here. • Leaked Sprint roadmap reveals slew of releases through September?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Motorola , Samsung , Sanyo , Sprint , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA Though the document doesn't exactly look magazine-quality, this is a case where we'd argue that it doesn't have to be to be real; it's clearly for internal use only, for one thing, and secondly, we don't know where else the picture of that new Sanyo Katana Eclipse would come from. The Eclipse is just one of several pretty nifty releases claimed to be lined up between now and September, with the Motorola VE20 Vegas and a pair of data cards joining it on August 17. September should bring the Motorola i365 and V950 Renegade , Samsung m220 and m320 , and the HTC MP6950 -- which we assume to be either the Touch Diamond or Touch Pro -- clearly in desperate need of an actual name by the time it launches. Go-go gadget, product marketing team! [Thanks, Owen] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola VE20 "Vegas" for Sprint is cheaper, less exciting than actual Vegas

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Anyone looking to relive the original RAZR's glory years without making the monumental leap up to the RAZR 2 might keep a close eye on Sprint over the next little while. The FCC has revealed the VE20 "Vegas," a flip that smacks of the V3's design cues while taking an ever-so-cautious approach to updating the styling and making sure that the package still stays firmly planted beneath the V9 in the food chain (or at least that's what the abundance of plastic would lead us to believe, but with Motorola, who the hell knows). It'll do EV-DO, a 2 megapixel camera, and touch-sensitive external controls on a fairly generous secondary display whenever it gets around to launching -- just don't expect the excitement, expense, or debauchery of an actual weekend in Sin City. • Verizon's new PTT: presence support, more contacts

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA , Casio Training materials from Verizon break down the nitty gritty on just what makes its new EV-DO Rev. A-based push-to-talk network better than the outgoing 1xRTT-based system, and apart from a totally unnecessary cameo by the "Can you hear me now?" guy, it's pretty enlightening. First, we learn that users will now be able to rock 500 individual contacts, 100 group contacts, and 50 contacts per group, up from 150, 50, and 20, respectively. As we've known, it'll also support presence, meaning callers will know whether you're available to annoy everyone around you before they hit the button. The slides on the two launch devices -- the Motorola V750 Adventure and Casio G'zOne Boulder -- don't reveal much new information, but we do see here that the black / silver version of the Boulder will be available with or without a camera for companies that like to clamp down on those sorts of things. See the rest after the break. [Thanks, anonymous tipster] Continue reading Verizon's new PTT: presence support, more contacts Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola W755 now available on Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA That Motorola W755 we know you've all been anxiously awaiting has now launched on Verizon, giving prospective buyers a decent choice in the lowish midrange with EV-DO, a 1.3 megapixel camera, touch sensitive external music controls, and a microSD slot for the boatloads of music you'll be undoubtedly toting around. This one actually looks like it could end up being a direct replacement for the RAZR V3m (which, amazingly, is still being sold) thanks to a shared form factor and only mildly upgraded specs across the board. Get it now for $69.99 after discounts in your choice of purple or the far more subtle "black slate". [Via Phone Scoop ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola's new V750 and W755 for Verizon in all their glory

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Two of Motorola's latest Verizon wares continue their relentless march toward launch day (or "L-day" as we like to call it when we're trying to sound extra important and cryptic), the V750 and W755 flips. We don't have a date on the V750 yet -- the slightly sportier-looking of the two in silver with red and mesh black trim -- but we now hear that the W755 is currently tracking for a May 23 debut. No word on pricing there, but with the meager feature set, we imagine it'll be pretty easy on the wallet. In the meantime, though, enjoy some photography. Come on, you know you want to.
