  • Sidekick Slide discontinued

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , EDGE Seems like just yesterday we were huddled in excited discussion over what sort of equipment Motorola had to contribute to the Hiptop world -- and if you've blinked recently, you may have missed it altogether. The Sidekick Slide has now been dropped from T-Mobile's lineup -- likely in response to the recent release of the Sidekick -- now moving on to join the iD in Danger purgatory. Stock of Moto's sole Danger-powered handset has already dried up online; the carrier tells us that there should still be "limited quantities" in stores across the land, but there's no telling how long that's going to last, so get 'em while you can, if you're into that sort of thing. • T-Mobile rolls out Sidekick Slide Scarlet

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , EDGE As expected , Motorola and T-Mobile have materialized a new variant of the Sidekick Slide , replacing that rather polarizing shade of purple with... well, an equally polarizing shade of red. The Sidekick Slide Scarlet, as it's known, features the same QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, and Hiptop-first sliding display as the original and is available starting today for $199.99 on contract. • T-Mobile suspends Sidekick Slide sales

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger So, first the bad news: T-Mobile and Motorola have confirmed that "some" Sidekick Slides are turning themselves off when the display is opened or closed. Now, the good: they're doing something about it. Slide sales have been suspended as of this evening while Moto works to identify just what the heck's going on; meanwhile, existing owners who've experienced problems can call T-Mobile or head into a store to "discuss available options." For what it's worth, neither of T-Mobile's other Sidekicks in the current lineup -- the LX and the iD -- are affected, so Sharp might see a nice little sales spike here as Slide owners look for an alternative. Follow the break for T-Mobile's full statement. T-Mobile USA suspended sales of the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide[TM] on Friday evening, Nov. 16, after Motorola - the manufacturer of the device - confirmed that some devices may inadvertently power off when the slide door on the front side of the phone is opened or closed. T-Mobile has taken this action to help ensure our customers only receive devices we're confident will perform at their peak, so they can stay effortlessly connected to those who matter most. Motorola is currently working to identify the root cause of the power cycle issue in affected Sidekick Slide devices. The T-Mobile Sidekick LX[TM] and Sidekick iD[TM] are not affected by this issue. If a customer purchased a Sidekick Slide that is experiencing the unintended power cycle issue, they may contact T-Mobile Customer Care, or go to a T-Mobile retail store, for assistance and to discuss available options. • T-Mobile announces Sidekick LX and Sidekick Slide

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Sharp , Danger , GSM , EDGE Capping off months of rumor and speculation , T-Mobile and Danger have announced two new Sidekicks today targeting decidedly different segments of the market. The Sidekick LX takes over as the new king of the Hiptop hill, boasting a Sidekick-first wide QVGA display -- touted as incorporating technology borrowed from Sharp's AQUOS televisions, no less -- along with configurable mood lighting, 1.3 megapixel camera with flash, and 128MB worth of bundled microSD memory. Meanwhile, the 4.6 x 2.4 x 0.68-inch Sidekick Slide becomes the first Hiptop device to come from Motorola, the first to ditch the trademark swivel display, and the first to go on a serious diet (anyone who's used a Sidekick of old knows that it ain't exactly small) while still packing the same functionality and 1.3 megapixel cam as its big sib. Look for the LX to hit store shelves come October 24 in your choice of "midnight blue" and "espresso brown" for a cool $299 on contract; the Slide slides in (sorry, couldn't help it) two weeks later on November 7 in a black / deep purple combo for a Franklin less at $199. %Gallery-7795% Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sidekick Slide hits the FCC, user's manual and all

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , EDGE Previously leaked shots of Motorola's Sidekick Slide were met with a lukewarm reception -- take your pick of complaints from the bizarre color scheme, the unfortunate looking keypad, the lack of a swivel display, or the fact that there's little technological improvement here over the Sidekick 3 -- and we've gotta say, the FCC's unflattering shots aren't doing it any favors. For what it's worth, though, you can now peruse the user's manual of the upcoming release for T-Mobile, a device that'll launch alongside the arguably more desirable Sidekick LX from Danger's more seasoned hardware partner, Sharp. Besides some enthralling instructions on how to apply pressure to the display to slide it open, there's not much here of interest; one thing we noted was a blurb on page 7 referring to the device as the Hiptop 4, but we're guessing there's still some draft cleanup to do and it'll likely revert to Sidekick Slide branding throughout by the time it hits the presses. %Gallery-7570% Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Danger Zante / Sidekick Slide in the wild

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Boy Genius has scored some hands-on time with the undisputed hottest member of Danger's Hiptop lineup, the so-called "Zante," also known (as best we can tell, anyway) as the Sidekick Slide for T-Mobile. Sharp, we love ya and all, but we've got to hand it to Motorola for producing what looks to be a nice lil' device. Hit the link for the goods. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • The Boy Genius Report: T-Mobile's new Sidekicks?

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Field tidbits from Engadget's mobile insider, The Boy Genius . Yeah, they're just renderings, but they sure do look believable, don't they? Or maybe we just want to believe -- we can't really tell any more -- but for what it's worth, we're allegedly looking at a pair of future Sidekicks destined for Danger's favorite carrier, T-Mobile. Details are slim, but the Sidekick Slide seems to be the Motorola-sourced device we've been hearing about, considering the big, fat "M" logo to the left of the display. The one on the right is a little more mysterious considering that it's merely labeled "Sidekick," but it seems a likely candidate to succeed the 3 . Whether either one of these is the oft-rumored "Zante" is unclear, but either way, it seems Danger's got its plate full for the next few months!
