  • BBC petitions to launch mobile media channels

The BBC Trust, the independent body that oversees the British Broadcasting Corporation, has launched a consultation into the broadcaster's mobile television and radio plans. The consultation follows in the wake of a recently-completed 12-month mobile TV trial that introduced channels including BBC1, BBC3 and News 24 via the Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 3 networks--despite grim consumer takeup (just 580 total views in June 2007, and a viewing average of only 13 minutes per month), the BBC is now petitioning to roll out a full-fledged mobile media effort. "The BBC's broadcast competitors are already present on mobile TV and there is some evidence of customer confusion over the absence of BBC channels," the broadcaster writes in its BBC Trust proposal, adding it is "uniquely placed to drive mainstream use of mobile television with wider benefits for broadcasters and consumers." The proposal states that while the Beeb will seek to adapt some existing content for mobile viewing, it will not explore made-for-mobile production. That’s the question the BBC Trust is posing, after the recent end of the Beeb’s 12-month trial of streaming mobile TV. The Trust suggests that there’s confusion among mobile users about why the BBC’s channels aren’t available alongside their commercial rivals on mobile. However, here’s the weird thing: people weren’t exactly falling over themselves to watch the [...]

  • BBC debuts new multiplatform strategy

Speaking at an in-house Multiplatform Day event, British Broadcasting Corporation controller of portfolio and multimedia Simon Nelson announced a new strategy for multiplatform commissioning, content creation and delivery across the BBC Vision platform, including investment in mobile services including television (both clips and broadcast TV), social media and location-based initiatives. The BBC promised to double its investment in multiplatform content over the next three years, spotlighting each television program with its own website, a new suite of user tools for rating and sharing content and improved search and navigation. "It's too easy to dismiss the multiplatform opportunity as simply getting our programs onto new devices or creating websites alongside programs," Nelson said. "We can use the two-way nature of new media platforms to ... collaborate with audiences in the creation of content and participative experiences." • O2 set to sell BBC mobile content through O2 Active mobile portal

Everybody wants a piece of the burgeoning mobile video market , and O2 is the newest wireless carrier to jump on the bandwagon. The German, UK, and Irish wireless carrier recently inked a deal with BBC Worldwide to distribute its mobile content through the O2 Active mobile portal. The deal will allow O2 to sell the BBC content in the form of ringtones, wallpapers, and video clips- with an initial offering that includes The Office , Little Britain , Doctor Who , I’m Alan Partridge , and League of Gentlemen. Broadcaster-Carrier partnerships seem to be the best way to bring mobile phone users the video content that they want. Afterall, it’s the mainstream TV/video-content that most appeals to most users - aside from YouTube that is. • BBC shows to hit Vodafone, Orange, and 3

Filed under: Multimedia , Orange , Vodafone This certainly isn't the first time that shows from the BBC have been delivered in a non-traditional method, but now fans of the programming will have the option of viewing select episodes on their handset. Vodafone, Orange, and 3 customers will all be able to take advantage of the one-year trial, which will include BBC One, BBC News 24, BBC Three, and radio broadcasts, but unfortunately, "premiership football, some films and cartoons, and some overseas programs like Neighbours" won't be available on the mobile service. BBC is hoping that the trial will test both the "effectiveness of the 3G network and the demand for BBC channels," and if you're lucky enough to take advantage of said offerings, you can expect things to start rolling sometime this month.
