  • FCC chairman dreams of free mobile internet for all Americans

Filed under: Misc Just over a year ago, we were all making bitter beer faces at FCC chairman Kevin Martin for not going along with a delightful sounding "free internet" plan. Now, it seems the main man's tune has changed. During a recent interview, Martin stated that there was a "social obligation in making sure everybody could participate in the next generation of broadband services because, increasingly, that's what people want." He's reportedly looking to attach a free mobile broadband requirement to the AWS-3 spectrum that's set to be auctioned next year, which would require the winner to allocate 25% for gratis access. 'Course, we wouldn't get our hopes us for this to actually go down like it surely is playing out in your mind just now, but we won't fault you for dreamin'. • HTC Touch Diamond finally gets FCC approval with US 3G HSDPA support!

Well that sure took a while. As the rest of the world had the honor of being part of HTC’s launch markets for the up and coming HTC Touch Diamond, the US has had to wait for HTC to push their US-spec HTC Touch Diamond through the FCC. The HTC Touch Diamond already passed [...]
  • FCC unveils Motorola 3G handset

Feel like being underwhelmed by yet another Motorola handset? In that case, head on over to the FCC's website and take a gander at this newest Motorola handset to get the regulatory body's thumbs-up. Motorola has managed to fit this unassuming candybar (monoblock) handset with a 3G radio, which is, unfortunately, more than we can [...]
  • FCC unveils new T-Mobile 3G handset - Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella

With T-Mobile's 3G network up and running, we're eager to see T-Mobile bring some serious 1700Mhz 3G-compatible handsets into their stable. Some eagle-eyed detective work by Cellphonesignal has uncovered FCC documents that clue us in to a new T-Mobile 3G handset - the Sony Ericsson Bella. We're looking for T-Mobile to pick up the Sony Ericsson [...]
  • Motorola L800t gets FCC blessing on way to China's TD-SCDMA

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , GSM , EDGE Remember that rumored L800t that got outed as part of Motorola's Asian lineup for '08 not long ago? We still can't really confirm that it's called the L800t, but we can confirm that the device itself is real thanks to an FCC approval -- and really, that's all that matters, isn't it? This unassuming candybar should mark Moto's first foray into China's budding TD-SCDMA network that hopes to eventually blanket the country's metropolitan areas with a proprietary form of 3G. The next question, naturally, is why the phone has found its way into American labs when it'll be biding its time over in Beijing, and the answer is pretty simple: we've got EDGE data on the 1900MHz band here, so theoretically, it could be used (with reduced performance) in the States -- just don't expect any high-speed action out of it. • FCC gives us a glimpse of the HTC Clio

What’s this now? We’re usually keen on HTC’s future handset plans, but this one seems to have flown in under our radar and has already been approved by the FCC. The HTC Clio, folks. It’s a GSM/EDGE/HSDPA device with WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a pair of cameras (a higher pixel-density shooter for the serious stuff and a forward-facing camera for video calling) - but the best part is the US 3G frequency support. You read correctly, the HTC Clio will be surfing the 850Mhz and 1900Mhz HSDPA networks that we have in the States (AT&T, we’re looking at you). Is the HTC Clio a US-spec HTC Athena , cleverly renamed like HTC loves to do? Or, is this thing the oft-rumored, but never materialized HTC Omni ? We’re not sure, but by the looks of the FCC label, we’re under the impression that the HTC Clio rocks a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard. And, seeing as the HTC Clio is made by, well, HTC, we’re going to take a shot in the dark and say that Windows Mobile 6.0 is in the cards - perhaps the refreshed WinMo interface with dynamic high-resolution support. Oh, and HTC’s requested that the FCC keep external photos locked-down for the time being - which makes a strong case for the HTC Clio being the HTC Omni. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this QWERTY keyboard-packing, US 3G-surfing bad-boy, so keep checking back. We’d like to see the HTC Clio launch before Christmas, but we already sent Santa our list, so we might just have to wait until next year. • Could the HTC Kaiser be coming to T-Mobile USA's 1700Mhz 3G network?

Well, at first glance, we’d be inclined to say no. But, upon closer examination of the HTC P4550 Kaiser’s FCC documentation , we’d have to give the possibility a resounding maybe. You see, the FCC documentation includes a users manual for the “ Holy Grail ” of mobile phones - and makes mention of both T-Mobile and 1700Mhz frequency support. Given screenshots, the presence of myFaves support, and mention of T-Mobile’s USA-specific tmobile.com web-address, we’re thinking that our favorite wireless carrier might just be getting the HTC Kaiser sometime soon. Oh, and there’s even mention of some delicious 1700Mhz support - which, as you’ll recall , is T-Mobile’s 3G frequency. Coincidence? We’d love to see HTC’s Kaiser hit T-Mo’s newly launched 3G network. • US-bound Nokia N95 approved by FCC

All those people lamenting the lack of US 3G frequency support on the Nokia N95 can rest easy. Our good, old friend, the FCC , has just given the thumbs-up approval for the American version of the Nokia N95. The US-spec N95 will be packin’ the same quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio, 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, microSD slot, and Symbian S60 platform as it’s European brethren - but with one major difference. This baby will work on the US’s odd-ball 3G frequencies with it’s dual-band 850/1900Mhz WCDMA radio. The FCC’s approval of the run-of-the-mill (if you want to refer to the 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics and GPS as run-of-the-mill) Nokia N95 was a bit overshadowed by the FCC leak of the 8GB Black Nokia N95 , but it’s an important development nonetheless. That’s good and bad. It’s great news for all those US residents that have waited this long for the America-specific Nokia N95 to finally reach our shores - we’re sure this news has all of you jumping for joy. But, if you’re one of the gotta-have-it gadget aficionados that jumped the gun and ponied up for an imported Euro-spec Nokia N95, you’ll be sad to hear that we’ll soon have a fully-functional 3G radio on the US-spec N95. Bummer. Still, nothing else has changed, so it’s not that bad. (But damned if 3G wouldn’t round out the Nokia N95’s feature-set nicely, in the US that is) FCC source [Via: Phone Scoop ] ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Nokia N95 starts shippingNokia 8600 approved by the FCCNokia N76, N95 approved by the FCCFCC just approved the Sony Ericsson M610i … again; is it codename Elena or Lizzy?Thank you for submitting news about the E65 getting approved by the FCC but it isn't exactly blog worthy
  • Nokia 6263 spotted hiding out at the FCC with T-Mobile 3G compatible 1700Mhz band

With T-Mobile set to launch their highly-anticipated 3G network here in The States, manufacturers are quietly scrambling to get their handsets revised to take advantage of the odd-ball 1700Mhz 3G band that T-Mobile will be using. The latest such iteration is the Nokia 6263 that has been spotted on the FCC website with the glorious T-Mobile 3G frequency (1700Mhz) printed on it’s FCC test pages. As we mentioned before, the Nokia 6263 will be packin’ a mid-range feature-set. It looks like the 2 megapixel camera and A2DP Bluetooth-toting 6263 will finally be making its way to the US. We can only imagine that the FCC ’s green-lighting of the 6263 means that it will be made available as soon as T-Mobile goes live with its 3G service. • Nokia N95 with American 3G gets FCC'd!

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We're speechless. In fact, we think we might cry -- but rest assured, they're tears of joy. Rumors of a Nokia N95 packing American HSDPA have been spreading like wildfire as of late, and we're ecstatic to see that they were totally true. Though this sucker gets down with the 850 and 1900MHz bands, it doesn't get in on the 1700MHz action, suggesting that if the T-Mobile rumor is still true, this ain't it. Though arguably not quite as attractive as the decidedly non-US 8GB N95 in black that we saw this morning, this phone's innards are pretty much the most beautiful thing we've seen all day. Nokia, we turn the floor over to you to answer questions about pricing and availability. [Via Wirelessinfo.com ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • FCC approves Samsung SGH-T639, T-Mobile's first 3G phone?

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , T-Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Well, what have we here? The oh-so-informative depths of the FCC have seemingly disclosed what appears to be the "first 3G handset approved for T-Mobile." Judging by the tested bands and the obvious model number, it looks like the SGH-T639 (Alltel flavor pictured) may be a sign of things to come (and hopefully soon) for T-Mobile. Of course, we did see a similar coincidence earlier this year when Nokia's N90 got its own shiny approval sticker, but there's no harm in hoping. The clamshell device supports quad-band connectivity and Bluetooth, but until T-Mobile or Samsung fess up to exactly what's going on here, speculation is still all we've got in regard to T-Mobile's forthcoming 3G rollout.
