  • Analyst sez iPhone 3G production could fall 40% in Q4

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Misc , Apple , OS X No clue if you've been paying attention the past few months, but quite a bit of belt tightening has been going on. Granted, Apple's been making out just fine , but a fresh report from the doors of FBR Research asserts that it may be cutting its Q4 iPhone 3G production in the wake of a global spending slowdown. It should be noted that a 10% cut was already on the table, making this 30% larger than anticipated. According to the report, the firm's reported decision to scale back production "suggests that the global macroeconomic weakness is impacting even high-end consumers, those that are more likely to buy Apple's expensive gadgets." As we restrain ourselves from thanking Captain Obvious , we should also point out that this may not be nearly as big a deal as the numbers make it seem -- maybe it overshot Q3 production in order to guarantee 100% service levels in all markets, for instance. How's that for analysis? [Via Silicon Alley Insider ] Analyst sez iPhone 3G production could fall 40% in Q4 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 20:02:00 EST. • iPhone 3G shortages in the US

It seems not even Apple's supply-chain expertise was enough to prevent iPhone shortages from hitting the Cupertino-based company's home-country. AT&T stores are reportedly running dry on iPhone 3G stock, with resupplies coming in a spate of shipments ranging from a dozen to 100 units. The backlog has resulted in AT&T stores being sold out of stock [...]
  • Apple still selling iPhones like it's nobody's business

In case the completely obvious wasn’t all that obvious, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster released a report to clients that Apple was still selling iPhones at a higher-than-expected level, following the September 5 price cuts . The 33% price cut heard ’round the world was followed by a 300% increase in iPhone sales, but it seems to have died down to around a 70%-100% increase, compared to the pre-price-drop demand. Analysts had predicted that increased demand would stabilize to a sustained 50% increase over previous demand. Munster expects Apple to sell 1.05 million iPhones by the end of September. Is it really surprising that cutting the price of the (arguably) most desirable phone to launch in the US was followed by feverish sales? Considering the spend-happy culture that is American society, we think it makes a lot of sense. Afterall, the iPhone is going to be a staple of many Christmas wishlists this year. • Apple increases orders for NAND flash memory modules - industry affected

By now it should be pretty apparent that Apple is on a hell-bent drive to hammer the iPhone home. With the incredible 500,000+ unit first-week sales figures, we’re sure Apple is sittin’ pretty with all the iPhone orders that are likely still coming in. But, with all these new iPhone orders, Apple’s demand for supplies of NAND flash memory modules is steadily increasing. Hynix Semiconductors and Samsung Electronics are realizing logistical difficulties as they try to meet Apple’s demands. DigiTimes is reporting that both Hynix and Samsung have started to hold more NAND module reserves for the iPhone-maker. That’s all well and good, except that the entire industry is starting to feel the strain on global solid-state memory stockpiles. Says DigiTimes , “Both Hynix and Samsung had informed their customers in late June that supply in July will be constrained, citing the fact that Apple is about to pre-stock NAND flash to meet the coming seasonal upturn.” The boosted demand from Apple is likely not only a result of the iPhone’s success, but also stems from Apple’s practice of hoarding NAND modules over the summer months - in preparation for the device releases to arrive in the Fall. We’re thinking Apple could be stockpiling the memory modules in preparation for the launch of the Apple iPhone “nano” in Q4 of this year. Apple appears to be the biggest player in the current NAND market and the entire industry is feeling the giant’s appetite for memory modules. Global supply shortages are being reported industry-wide, says DigitTimes , with second-tier manufacturers feeling a bigger hit than first-tier players. Getting a little greedy are we, Apple? We can’t blame you, if we had a hit on our hands we’d want to milk it for every drop of success. But, damn, you’re hoarding of the entire globe’s NAND supply is kind of selfish, don’t you think? You remind us of our little brother...
