  • RAZR stops a bullet, its owner reports "feeling lucky, punk."

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola New Orleans resident Ronald Richard was mowing the lawn when he felt a hard object hit him in the chest -- precisely where he'd been keeping his pink Swarovski-encrusted (just kidding) RAZR. It was only after Richard took off his sweater that he discovered the .45-caliber slug and realized that the phone had literally taken a bullet for him. According to paramedics, the angle of the bullet and the modest stopping power of the cellphone were all that stood between the man and serious injury or even death. Instead, this lucky gent got away with little more than a fairly significant bruise and an excuse to pick up that Aura he's been coveting. • LG's concept phone contest winners should please art house gadgetphiles

Filed under: LG , Misc When we see alluring phone concepts that'll never leave the lab, we end up wishing there was a little more innovation in the handsets out in the wild. There was a wealth of eyebrow-raising examples of that principle when LG Japan exhibited top entries to its Mobile Design Contest last weekend. We're keen on the fbt, a phone designed for braille text messaging, and the Tap, which is shaped like a light switch and functions like one too -- when you tap it, the phone turns off so you can live once again in peace. The winner, though, was the above-pictured Planet Phone, the surface of which is dotted with LEDs representing your friends; if you don't talk to someone for a while, their light gradually moves out to the edge. It's supposed to remind you to keep in touch, but it has darker connotations -- if you become angry with someone, you can revel in the pleasure of watching them slowly tick away into oblivion. That's absolutely a feature we want to see added to the Storm . • Cox to enter cellphone biz, link handsets to other cable-related services

Filed under: Sprint , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA , Misc , LTE We know, you're just dying to say this is a complete shock, but we're here to inform you that it's not . If you'll recall, Cox dug deep to snatch up a decent block of spectrum in this year's 700MHz auction , and it even went so far as to promise a differentiated product that would eventually integrate with its other content and services. Sure enough, it's keeping its word. After spending $500 million on wireless capacity in its markets, president Pat Esser says it's time to turn things on. By relying on Cox's own 3G network (along with Sprint's, initially), the carrier will offer up an undisclosed amount of handsets that will "include a network address book that automatically synchronizes with home PCs" and allow remote programming of one's DVR. Furthermore, users will be able to access e-mail and voicemail that they receive at home right on their mobile, and ideally, subscribers could watch TV shows right on their handsets. Get ready for an awkward new rival in the wireless space beginning, um, anytime now. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • E Ink concept makes the cellphone quite remarkable

Here at Unwired View, cellphone concepts come and go. But I think this idea for an E-ink phone by designer Anthony Reed will manage to stick. You see, this E-ink phone doesn’t look half as imaginative as many other concepts that we’ve covered here before, and yet when you think about it, something like it [...]
  • Icono phone concept: call me, we'll do lunch

Filed under: Handsets Zinc Chan, a London-based designer, just struck fame with his Icono concept telephone with the speed of back-tax owing Ohio plumber. The design is inspired by the internationally recognized "call me" hand gesture made famous by pouty-mouthed debutantes and hollywood starlets -- aka Shaka, amongst surfers. As such, the microphone and speaker are split to ride the swell of the pinkie and thumb, respectively. Callers then draw a unique pattern on the touchscreen pre-assigned to their contacts to initiate a call. As far fetched as the concept may seem, work related to induction charging, body area networks for transmitting audio across human skin , round LCDs , and any number of short length wireless solutions could very well make this concept a near-term reality. One more pic after the break. [Via Textually and Core77 ] Continue reading Icono phone concept: call me, we'll do lunch Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • DoCoMo serves your DLNA content to a friend's TV via mobile phone

Filed under: Multimedia Eager to live in the fantastical future it has prophesied , NTT DoCoMo went to CEATEC and demoed an upcoming addition to its Pocket U service: MH2H (Mobile Home to Home), which gives you the ability use your cellphone to stream content from your computer at home to a friend's TV. The phone connects to your friend's WiFi network and sends his or her DLNA -compliant receiver the IP address of your also-DLNA-compliant server, then tells said server to accept the connection and start streaming any videos, songs, or photos you feel like sharing. When you leave, the connection ends and every one goes back to partying on their own isolated media islands like it's 2006. [Image courtesy of Tech-On! ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Latest NPD data shows RAZR V3 still top-selling handset in America

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola No need to defog your spectacles, what you just read there in the headline is the truth. Astoundingly enough, Motorola's nearly archaic (in cellphone years, anyway) RAZR V3 is still the top-selling handset in the United States. Of course, it helps that it's highly subsidized on practically every carrier from coast to coast, but we're still a little stunned that it's selling this well nearly 2.5 years after Moto moved its 50 millionth unit . The rest of the top five isn't nearly as shocking, with Apple's iPhone snagging the silver, RIM's BlackBerry Curve grabbing the bronze, LG's Chocolate at number four and the BlackBerry Pearl at five. With the original RAZR still selling so well, one would think Motorola could just tweak it slightly and issue a second iteration for even more windfall profits. Er, wait . • Sagem valiantly returns with Porsche Design P'9522

Filed under: Handsets , Sagem Not even two full months after Sagem fell into the obviously capable hands of Sofinnova, out pops the company's return to the red carpet. Picking right up (numerically speaking, at least) where the P'9521 left off is the well-endowed P'9522, which was reportedly built with a little help from Porsche Design . The candybar features an aluminum chassis, 2.8-inch display, 5-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, fingerprint reader and a microSD card slot. Unfortunately, the fun and games end there, as there's no 3G radio anywhere to be found; plus, you'll be asked to lay down about €600 ($875) to acquire one when it ships next month. Loyalty has its price, we guess. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung cameraphones to sport Scanbuy 2D barcode solution

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung While Samsung's latest cellphone-related release doesn't pack quite the excitement as what T-Mobile unveiled yesterday , those obsessed with ultrathin lines packed together in the shape of a rectangle will be thrilled. Said mega-corp has landed an agreement with Scanbuy that will preload the ScanLife mobile 2D barcode application on an unspecified number of Samsung's cameraphones. The program enables the handsets to easily read and digest EZcodes and other major 2D barcode formats, and while you're probably envisioning some sort of warehouse scenario right now, the possibilities for on-the-go marketing are nearly endless. Expect Scanbuy-equipped Samsung cellies to go on sale in Spain, Italy, and Denmark as early as next month, with availability in other major markets to follow suit shortly. • Texting while riding your motorcycle can be fun, dangerous

We obviously don’t condone any activity that would put yours or the lives of your fellow commuters in danger. That being said, this footage of some idiot nonchalantly lounging on his bike while using his mobile phone (presumably to send out an SMS text message) really drives home the need for laws prohibiting the use [...]
  • The solar-powered mobile phone case/necktie is here!

Now this is just the kind of convergence we’ve been waiting for! The solar-powered necktie might not exactly be the idea in mobile convergence, but with photo-voltaic cells woven in to the necktie’s fabric and a pouch to hold your mobile phone, the solar-powered necktie is the epitome of “geek-chic.” Or maybe just “geek.” The sun-loving [...]
  • Air controller “talks” down airplane with SMS text messages

Talk about flying blind. The Irish Times is reporting that an air-traffic controller used SMS text messages to help an instrument-less pilot land safely. When a twin-engined Piper aircraft lost power to all its avionics systems (electrical power, communications and weather radar) in a “serious incident,” the pilot used his mobile phone to call a nearby airport’s [...]
