  • Motorola VE240 officially coming to Cricket, MetroPCS

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , CDMA As we'd heard back in August , the scrappy little VE240 candybar from Moto is destined for a pair of regionals -- Cricket and MetroPCS. It's got stereo Bluetooth, MP3 support, expandable memory up to 4GB, and that's about it; nothing to get terribly excited about, but the light spec sheet should keep things affordable. It's available now in Cricket's Tulsa market with wider availability coming to both carriers in the next few weeks. • Vertu's Signature S Design gets handled -- gently

Filed under: Handsets , Vertu , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS At a staggering 242,380 Czech crowns (about $12,331), Vertu's latest Signature S Design model certainly isn't for everybody -- in fact, we'd venture to say that it's very nearly for no body -- but putting the positively stupid pricing aside for a moment, you have to admit that this thing is beautiful in its own way. IDNES.cz somehow managed to grab both stainless steel and gilded versions of the 3G candybar, revealing that the user interface is about as plain-vanilla as any other Series 40 device out there (what do you expect for the price of a small car?) but the hefty body looks as beautiful in person as it does in Vertu's carefully-prepared PR. It apparently feels great, too -- not like we'll ever know. Anyone need a kidney? • Nokia USA taking names for N79 and N85

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian Whoa, whoa! Calm down just a second there, buddy, we didn't say they're shipping -- they're not -- but keep your chin up, because they're getting close. To prove it, Nokia USA has started taking pre-orders for North American versions of its lovely N79 and N85 superphones. No estimated shipping date is showing up just yet, but we're assured that they "get it first, so you get it first" -- bold words for a direct retailer that frequently gets beaten by third-party distributors with the hot new models. We'll see. [Via Symbian-Guru ] Nokia USA taking names for N79 and N85 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 09:39:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . • Nokia rolls deep on the cheap, cooks up six models

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM Looking through the pictures here, you might not suspect that the sticker prices for these bad boys range from just €90 ($117) all the way down to a jaw-droppingly low €25 (about $32), but they do, which raises a question: why must they be targeting emerging markets alone? Nokia has a history of going after emerging economies with the occasional barrage of models , and the latest round ups the game with features we'd be totally cool with seeing on your average "mature market" handset -- goodies like integrated flashlights, sturdy lanyards, and a vaguely-defined "Nokia Life Tools" service that delivers relevant information in a graphical interface to phones via SMS (the logic being that GPRS isn't always available where these phones are going to be used). The most expensive device of the lot will be the 5130 XpressMusic, the first music-centric Nokia destined for low-income areas of the world with an integrated FM radio, 2-megapixel cam, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Next up we've got the fancy 7100 Supernova, joining Nokia's fashion-friendly line in a couple tasty colors with a 1.3-megapixel cam. If we skip all the way to the bottom, we have the lowly 1202, a rugged-looking little monochrome beast with an extended battery, a five-user phonebook to make it easy to pass around the whole family, and extra-loud ringtones -- and at 25 euros, it's Nokia's lowest-cost phone ever. Why do we want one really badly? Are we crazy? Look for all six of these to start filtering around the globe between now and early 2009. • T-Mobile offers Motorola's MOTOZINE ZN5 for $99 on contract

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE Among American carriers, T-Mobile USA isn't typically the first that comes to mind when we're thinking of purveyors of bleeding-edge hardware -- but between the G1 and this, we might have to start rethinking that stereotype. T-Mob has officially become the first carrier in North America to offer Motorola's 5-megapixel MOTOZINE ZN5 , a quadband EDGE candybar with WiFi, a morphing keypad along the lines of T-Mobile's own MOTOROKR E8 , and a 5-megapixel camera with xenon flash that's been infused with a heavy dose of Kodak imaging wizardry. The best part about the whole thing might be the price -- just $99 on a two-year contract, which fills our hearts with hope that awesome cams on phones are now officially commodity items. Look for the ZN5 in "select" T-Mobile stores and online starting today. • Alcatel's OT-I650 integrates flashlight, accelerometer, ugly into one convenient package

Filed under: Handsets , Others , GSM Great news: just because you want to save a few bucks doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the flashlight on your next phone. Heck, in Russia, you can pay a mere 3,190 rubles (about $119) and get yourself a nice little Alcatel OT-I650 , a candybar sporting a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, FM radio, accelerometer (both for controlling phone functions and for use with the integrated pedometer), 12 hours of talk time, and enough ugly to minimize the odds someone's going to swipe your piece off a desk when you're not looking. Oh, and there's that aforementioned flashlight built into the top. Get it in your choice of black or orange -- and if you're in the States, make a nice little Russian vacay out of it. • Sporty Alcatel OT-I650 comes with a G-sensor and an affordable price tag

We don’t hear much about Alcatel mobile phones, but the latest handset to come out under this brand surely deserves a bit of our attention. Called Alcatel OT-I650, the new phone is an entry-level one that comes with a G-sensor (accelerometer). This apparently allows users to switch between applications – like music player, games, alarm [...]
  • Nokia 2600 launched by AT&T, free with a 2-yr contract

Nokia 2600 is a basic candybar that was officially announced by the Finnish manufacturer at the beginning of 2008. The device is targeted mainly at emerging markets, so it might come as a surprise the fact that, today, AT&T has launched it in the US, in two color versions: black and red. AT&T is offering the [...]
  • Nokia reveals slender 2228 candybar for CDMA markets

Nokia's 2228 isn't much to look at on paper, but then again, it was never meant to be. Designed to handle the most basic of cellular telephone tasks in Nokia's global CDMA markets, the candybar measures in at just 12-millimeters thick and includes a 1.3-megapixel camera, integrated multimedia player, support for tethering and a LED indicator to alert you of messages awaiting your attention. There's no definitive word on where exactly this thing is going to launch in Q4, but it'll be snaking around somewhere, we're certain. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Nokia 2228 CDMA phone announced

Launching the 1606 flip phone in the US was not enough for Nokia today, as the Finnish manufacturer has also unveiled a new CDMA candybar, the Nokia 2228. In the Finns’ words, the 2228 is a uniquely designed phone. Sadly, there is only one tiny, unclear image with the new device at the moment I’m writing this, [...]
  • The Mobiado 105CLB: Louis Vuitton fakery at Louis Vuitton prices

Filed under: Handsets , Others , GSM , EDGE , UMTS So the less-exciting news out of luxo-phone shop Mobiado today is that it has recrafted its 105EM candybar in two new bank-busting "Special Edition" shades: red (trimmed with 24 karat gold, naturally) and white. The more exciting news, though, clearly has to be the 105EM CLB Series, trimmed in Mobiado's "designer monogram" -- also known as "Louis Vuitton's monogram, minus the LV, plus some random Ms and lions and crap". They've got quadband EDGE and some form of UMTS-based 3G on the 850 and 2100MHz bands, featuring a 2-megapixel cam, "more than 1GB" of onboard storage, and all the faux pretension you can handle. No word on pricing or availability, but in the meantime, we can think of a few other creative ways to blow exorbitant wads of cash. • Samsung's S60-based I7110: HSDPA, AMOLED display, 5MP camera

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Hardware fanatics, listen up -- a golden egg has been laid in the form of the Samsung I7110. Arriving with a slightly sleeker design than on the earlier spotted i7110c , this Symbian S60-based candybar has been revealed to the world today in London. Specs wise, you're looking at a luscious 2.6-inch AMOLED display, FM radio / transmitter , GPS navigation (with geotagging functionality), an accelerometer, "3D graphics," Bluetooth 2.0, HSDPA and WiFi. Additionally, it packs a 5-megapixel camera (with Auto Focus and a LED flash), robust multimedia player (DivX support included), 50MB of internal memory, a microSDHC slot, video recording, 11-hours of talk time and a 12.9-millimeter thin body. Price remains a mystery, but those in Russia will be the first in the know when it launches there next month. As for everyone else? Patience. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
