  • Sorry, CDMA: Telus, Bell finally fess up to GSM aspirations

Filed under: Bell Mobility , Telus Mobility , HSDPA , UMTS , HSUPA , LTE Capping months of speculation , Canadian CDMA carriers Bell and Telus have both announced that they'll be moving to HSPA to power portions their 3G networks as a stop-gap on their way to an eventual LTE rollout. While both networks will be investing heavily to build out the necessary infrastructure, they'll be sharing the fruits of their collective labor to extend roaming agreements that are already in place between the two -- a logical move, considering they'll be going up against the Rogers juggernaut which has the distinct advantage of already being on the GSM technology roadmap. The carriers are looking at 2010 to flip the switch on HSPA, but don't worry, owners of EV-DO handsets: the CDMA goods will continue to be supported for the forseeable future while GSM is getting layered on top. Odds are, anyone using a CDMA handset will be due for new hardware long before the lights finally go out. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Telus claims BlackBerry Storm on behalf of Her Majesty's Canadian Dominion

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Telus Mobility , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA Seems that the bickering over which Canadian carrier would land the Storm has drawn to an end -- either that, or Telus is gearing up to jump the gun and just declare itself the preemptive winner in the hopes of elbowing Bell right out of the picture. Whatever the case, the CDMA giant now has a page up on its site encouraging folks to sign up to find out when the 9530 is available -- which according to Boy Genius Report's leaked press release, should be "just in time for the holiday shopping season." If that unnecessarily nebulous statement means November, that puts 'em right in line with Verizon to the south and Vodafone to the east; so much for preferential treatment on the home turf, eh? [Via Boy Genius Report ] Update: What's this -- a truce? Could it be? Bell has now also announced that it's getting the Storm, so if there's any sort of exclusivity going on here, it's for an awfully short period of time. Thanks, everyone! • Bell first out of the gate with CDMA Touch Dual

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Bell Mobility , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA That CDMA version of HTC's Touch Dual that some FCC lab got to fiddle around with a while back is now packaged up all nice and pretty for cash-flush consumers to enjoy. It's not Verizon, Sprint, or Alltel that's celebrating the release, though -- for this particular release, you've gotta look north just a little bit to Bell Mobility. The phone features Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and a $399.95 CAD off-contact price that drops all the way down to $99.95 if you're willing to sign your life away for three years. Our knee-jerk reaction is, "we'll just hold out for the Diamond on Telus ," but if you insist on a slider with this kind of form factor, it's the only way to fly. • Marathon Canadian spectrum auction finally wraps up

Filed under: Misc Holy cow, we're actually out of breath just thinking about how long it's been since Canada kicked this off . After running some two months and hauling in nearly three times as much cash as had been widely predicted -- $4.2 billion in Canadian currency, to be exact -- the Great White North's AWS auction has drawn to a close, and it looks like there's going to be some new competition in the mix whether Rogers, Bell, and Telus like it or not. The most prolific bidder has turned out to be Globalive, which runs the Yak brand and made off with licenses pretty much everywhere except Quebec at the cost of some $442 million CAD; several other new players came to bat for some licenses as well, and naturally, the big three incumbents took the opportunity to snap up some extra spectrum -- Rogers to the tune of nearly one billion dollars. It'll probably be a year or two before any of the rookies have service to offer, though they're helped out by new regulations that require existing networks to lease space on towers for new transceivers and offer roaming rates that aren't prohibitively high. • Telus announces HTC Touch Diamond for a summer release

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Telus Mobility , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA Though the Sprint version is the most well-scooped CDMA variant thus far, Telus is actually becoming the first carrier 'round these parts to announce the Touch Diamond imbued with a little EV-DO for your data-consumption pleasure. The phone will run $149.99 CAD (which is just about a wash in US dollars) on a three-year contract, accompanied by data plans ranging from $15 for email and instant messaging to $30 for email, IM, and web browsing. Sprint, Verizon, we anxiously await your press releases. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • iPhone finally coming to Canada

Filed under: Handsets , Rogers Wireless , Announcements , Apple digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_Finally_Coming_to_Canada_3'; It seemed like it would never happen , but the impossible has occurred: Apple's iPhone is coming to Canada. The news was quietly slipped into telecom giant Rogers' latest earnings report, with the simple statement that the company was "thrilled to announce" a "deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year." Apparently, lips are sealed on all other details, but we'll keep you posted as news gets our way. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Canada's Koodo Mobile lights up

Filed under: Telus Mobility As expected , Telus has rolled out its young, fresh, "fat-free" (their words, not ours) Koodo Mobile brand this week, targeting Canadians looking for a no-frills way to get wireless on the cheap. In light of all the unlimited action we've seen stateside as of late, we're not necessarily blown away by the offerings -- but $65 CAD for 1000 minutes plus unlimited incoming calls, 50 text messages, and per-second billing is alright... we guess. The phone selection is positively barebones, too, reflecting the mantra of the company itself; buyers can choose from a Samsung U410 for $75, a Motorola KRZR for $200, and a W385 -- also from Moto -- for $125. Any Canadians want to chime in here? Is this a blessing, or a Telus-backed fleece? [Via Howard Chui ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Rogers brings HSPA to 22 Canadian markets

Filed under: Rogers Wireless , HSDPA , UMTS , HSUPA Just about a year after its initial, extremely limited rollout in Ontario and a few months of soft launching across the lands, Rogers has announced that the switch has now officially been flipped on its HSPA hardware in a solid 22 Canadian markets. Cities fortunate enough to make the cut include Vancouver, Winnipeg, Regina, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City among a smattering of others. The carrier's official branding for its 3G services is "Vision" -- a curious homage to Sprint's EV-DO network in the US -- though Rogers gets the crown for the cool factor here thanks to its true video calling capability, the only carrier in North America to offer the feature ( ahem, AT&T? ). Given the fact that Rogers is careful to call the network "HSPA" (as opposed to "HSDPA") we imagine high-speed uploads are in the cards, too. Bonus! • Rogers releases WM6-equipped Palm Treo 750

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Rogers Wireless , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS AT&T customers still have a grueling wait ahead of them (apparently) for an official Windows Mobile 6 update to their Treo 750s, but our buddies north of the border are on the ball. Canada's GSM grandpappy, Rogers, has finally gotten around to launching the device -- a bit late, yes, but with Windows Mobile 6 and enabled HSDPA out of the gate. Normally we'd say the timing sucks with a newer product having just launched overseas, but let's be honest: between the Treo 500 and the 750, we're sure there are still plenty of folks willing to take the older model. Pick it up now for $599 CAD (about $584) on a two-year contract, or a far more palatable $249 CAD (about $243) on a three-year. • HTC TyTN finally released on Rogers Wireless

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Rogers Wireless , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA As is sometimes de rigeur for providers, Rogers Wireless ' TyTN seemed to be rolling out for the last couple days save for a press release, pricing info, and any details on its product pages. All that has finally been settled and today marks the day when this fine bit of tech can finally be picked up in Canada. No major changes seem to be in place -- no, no Windows Mobile 6, at least not yet -- for this new handset and pricing is set at a steep $399.99 (that price is of course in Canadian dollars, which works out to $370 or so) on a 3 year term. Way to go Ted and Co, but we have to ask why this little fella took so long to get out the door. Hit the read link for the goods. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
