  • T-Mobile G1 pre-orders sell out (update: not quite yet)

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , Android If you're a T-Mobile customer who's been dozing off for the past few days, you've already missed your chance to pre-order yourself a G1 . With any luck, that won't be a problem and you'll just be able to march into a store on or around October 22 and pick one up the old-fashioned way, but the window of opportunity for an utterly stress-free Android buying experience is closed. We don't have hard numbers on just how many units were being offered through the pre-order program, but 60,000 is getting tossed around as a rumor, which would work out to about 10 percent of the total outlay HTC is said to be aiming for by year's end . Of course, if you're not a T-Mobile customer, this is all business as usual and you're just chuckling under your breath that everyone's stuck in the same boat now, aren't you, you sick puppy? [Via TmoNews ] Update: Well, that was quick -- the "Log in to order" button is working once again. Any bets on how long until they're out a second time? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • T-Mobile kills the 1GB data cap, takes a more friendly approach

Filed under: HTC , T-Mobile , Misc , Android digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/T_Mobile_kills_the_1GB_data_cap_takes_more_friendly_aproach'; It looks like T-Mobile is listening folks -- and they appear to be responding. In a statement we've just received from the company, they tell us that they're killing the hard-line approach to data capping, saying instead they'll reserve the right to cap a "small fraction" of users who abuse the network. In their words: "Our goal, when the T-Mobile G1 becomes available in October, is to provide affordable, high-speed data service allowing customers to experience the full data capabilities of the device and our 3G network. At the same time, we have a responsibility to provide the best network experience for all of our customers so we reserve the right to temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of our customers who have excessive or disproportionate usage that interferes with our network performance or our ability to provide quality service to all of our customers. We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident that T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific terms for our new data plans are still being reviewed and once they are final we will be certain to share this broadly with current customers and potential new customers." • T-Mobile G1 has push Gmail

Filed under: Messaging , Software , HTC , T-Mobile , Android Sure, there's a lot of to love about the open-source, Android-powered T-Mobile G1, but Google's Andy Rubin just confirmed what might be the new handset's killer app: push Gmail. While that's not a first, it could be a major differentiating feature for Android phones here on out, since it sounds like the app is advanced and partially web-based: it has the threading, search, and Google Talk presence features of the web client. We'll let you know more as soon as we find out. Permalink | Email this | Comments

  • Amazon: 6 million DRM-free songs on T-Mobile G1

Filed under: Multimedia var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Official_Amazon_MP3_comes_on_G1_Android_phone'; It's true , Amazon just announced that its MP3 music store will be pre-loaded as an application on the T-Mobile G1 . Users will be able to search, download, buy and play music from Amazon MP3 -- that's a selection of 6 million DRM-free MP3 songs from all four major labels and many independents. The pre-loaded Amazon MP3 application provides G1 owners with a phone-optimised view of the Amazon MP3 store -- WiFi is required to download music, but searching, browsing, and listening to samples can be done over 3G the T-Mobile network. Tracks cost around $0.89 with most albums priced between $5.99 and $9.99. How you like them Apples, Apple. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Meet the T-Mobile G1

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Android digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Meet_the_T_Mobile_G1_Engadget'; Uh, c'mon guys -- this is a little ridiculous. Now typically, you want to keep this sort of thing under wraps until the day of your event, but it seems like the cats and kittens at T-Mobile can't contain themselves. Yes, you're looking at the first official product shot of the G1 Android phone ever. Enjoy it. Update: TmoNews has just uncovered new specs and info on the phone. Here's what they've got so far: the phone is 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches, weighs 5.6 ounces, features a 480 x 320 HVGA display, sports 3G (obviously), GPS, has a 3.1-megapixel camera, supports up to 8GB of memory (though no format is mentioned), and will feature 5 hours of talktime with 130 hours of standby. Strangely, the phone won't do video capture (what?), won't have stereo Bluetooth, will require a Gmail account, and won't be sold at stores outside of a 2-5 mile radius of T-Mobile's 3G coverage area. That last bit sounds a little odd to us, but we're guessing a lot of the functionality of this device will be shot in non-3G areas. [Thanks, Luis ; Via TmoNews ] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • T-Mobile goes live with G1 website

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android It's one thing to appear on a website before being officially outed. It's another to have a web portal designed specifically for a handset. On the eve of its official debut in the Big Apple, T-Mobile has launched the definitive G1 website, complete with a G1 logo, the time and date of tomorrow's press event, a few tabs sure to be chock full of juicy details just as soon as said event closes, and most importantly, a pre-order button (of sorts) in order to sign up for what we can only fathom to be a notification of availability. 10:30AM tomorrow morning -- we'll be there , you'll be there. No specs or info, but if you had any doubt this thing was coming on Tuesday we'd say it just got cleared up. Get ready for the Googlephone, kids. • Android-powered HTC Dream to sell for $199 on T-Mobile

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android With under a week to go before the HTC Dream is officially unveiled in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal has given us something juicy to gnaw on for the time being: a price. Unsurprisingly positioned to compete directly with the iPhone 3G , the Android-powered HTC Dream / G1 will go for a cool $199 (with 2-year contract, obviously) when it launches on T-Mobile, though there's no word yet on what it'll run sans subsidization. So, how do you like dem Apples? [Via Fortune ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Android So it's really no big secret at this point, but we've now received confirmation that T-Mobile will be unveiling its first Android handset -- presumably the Dream , G1, or whatever they decide to call it -- at a press event in New York City on September 23 . The event is a whole shindig, too, kicking off in the morning and featuring "presentations from T-Mobile, Google and other company executives" followed by hands-ons with the real deal. • HTC's Android-driven Dream revealed in glorious spy photos

Filed under: Handsets , Features , HTC , T-Mobile , Android digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_Dream_Googlephone_first_pics'; Sure, we've seen some blurry videos and a few stolen glimpses when Andy Rubin demonstrated this beast, but now we've gotten our hands on a slew of pictures showing off a very real T-Mobile-branded Dream in all its Android-running glory. Not only does this confirm the design spied in those FCC docs as well as show off that nearly-done version of Android, but it seems to confirm the fact that this will be headed to T-Mobile, and sooner rather than later judging from the looks of the above device. Needless to say, our inner-geeks are completely geeking out right now. Hit the gallery below for a handful of other views of the phone. [Thanks, Michael] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • HTC Dream FCC approved, Android clear for launch?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , Android var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_Dream_FCC_approved_Android_clear_for_launch'; The long rumored HTC Dream handset -- once referred to as "The Googlephone" -- just received FCC approval. The handset is listed as type, "Dream' with a model of "DREA100." The same model also appears with a WiFi Interoperability Certificate touting 802.11b/g WiFi. If indeed this is the long awaited Android phone, then T-Mobile, HTC, and Google are free to announce in September with an October launch as originally planned. FCC label with that DREA100 moniker pictured after the break. Update : Further investigation reveals mention of a "jogball" like that seen on the handset from the videos . The Dream is said to be in compliance with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR with this round of testing conducted only on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900 and WCDMA 1700 bands -- the latter being T-Mobile's preferred 3G frequency.
