  • iriver 3-inch touchscreen "GSM phone" headed for the States

Filed under: Handsets , GSM Iriver 's been pushing out all sorts of product at this year's CES, but this is the biggest surprise from the company yet. The "iriver GSM phone" is an iPhone-esque handset featuring a 3-inch 480 x 272 touchscreen, and a Linux-based UI that is practically mimics the iPhone feature for feature. The actual hardware is quite similar to iriver's own W7. According to PC Mag, the phone has 4GB of flash storage, Rhapsody and other media support, a two megapixel camera (with video, take that Apple), Adobe Flash support, GPS and mobile TV. While it's unclear what sort of wireless options this has, like WiFi or 3G, and what carriers will support it, iriver has committed to bring this to the States. Iriver's Owen Kwon promises the phone will be "more affordable" than the iPhone, but otherwise there's no other info on release. There's video of the phone after the break. • Hands-on with the Nokia N95 8GB for North America!

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS All signs pointed to this sucker existing , and sure enough, here it is. The N95 8GB for North America is pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be -- an exact replica of the European version with the 2100MHz WCDMA radio surgically removed and replaced with an 850 / 1900MHz counterpart for speedy data in these lands. The screen is up to 2.8 inches versus the original N95's 2.6, but the 8GB of internal storage comes at the cost of the microSD slot, so don't get all cocky on us about rocking 16GB of storage in your pocket, alright? Check it in stores this quarter for $749. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Motorola debuts ROKR E8

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Linux This one's no secret, Moto leaked the ROKR E8 way back in September, but the company is finally getting official with the musicphone at CES tonight. The phone is free of physical keys, with a completely smooth face and vibrating haptics to denote key "presses." There's a nav wheel in the middle, which might not be the revolution Motorola is touting it as, but sure looks nice. The handset has 3.5mm heaphone jack, 2GB of flash storage, a microSD slot, FM radio and a microUSB plug. The phone is Linux-based, and Moto is quite proud of its audio fidelity, but we suppose the proof is in the listening. No launch or price info just yet. • Sony Ericsson gets real with geometric Z555 flip

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE Sony Ericsson appears to have taken a page clear out of Nokia's book with the Z555, a fashionable flip (subject to personal opinions, of course) that looks like a hinged homage to Espoo's Prism series. The innards aren't much to talk about -- the GSM comes in one of two triband flavors depending on your region, and there's nary a hint of 3G to be found -- but the draw here is something Sony Ericsson's calling Gesutre Control, which allows you to control a handful of phone functions (ringtone mute and alarm snooze are specifically called out) by waving your hand in close proximity to the handset. You also get a hidden external OLED display, 1.3 megapixel cam, stereo Bluetooth, and pretty much all the colorful rectangles you can handle. Look for both regional versions of the phone to launch by the end of this quarter. %Gallery-12798% Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sling announces SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , RIM Windows Mobile: check . Palm OS: check . S60: yep . So what's the giant, gaping hole left in Sling's coverage of mobile clients? BlackBerry, of course, and the company has finally confirmed what we already sorta knew -- that a SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is officially in the works. Sling will be demonstrating its latest client at CES on a Pearl 8120 , utilizing its WiFi connection (though 3G will work just as well) to stream down an endless barrage of mind-numbing content from the Slingbox of your choice. Look for it to show up on a BlackBerry near you "later this year" for a shade under $30. Hop on over to Engadget for a quick hands-on with the goods!
