  • Alltel launches HTC PPC6800

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Alltel , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Gee, Verizon, go ahead and take your time there, will ya? Alltel follows up Sprint to become the second network in the US to launch HTC's next-gen CDMA Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset (Alltel's site claims it's Windows Mobile 5, but we're not believing that -- check the screen shots), offering WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, 2 megapixel cam, and just about all the EV-DO you can handle as the HTC PPC6800 . Grab it for $549 off contract, or $249 after two-year agreement and a $100 snail mail rebate. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Motorola day: Verizon gets Q9m, Sprint gets V9m

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Sprint-Nextel , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA As expected , Verizon and Sprint have given Motorola a venue for its latest and greatest hardware today, releasing the Q9m Windows Mobile smartphone and RAZR 2 V9m flip respectively. Though the media centric Q9m's $350 price on a two-year contract ain't exactly pocket change, it's interesting to note that it whittles right down to a more manageable $250 after rebate -- a mere $20 more than you'll pay for an old school Q Black . Meanwhile, minions from the other side of the CDMA camp (yes, we mean Sprint) have prepped the V9m for launch today at the same $250 price point after rebate, making it the first of several US carriers committed to a RAZR 2 launch to actually get it out of the door. If everything goes the way we expect it to, both of these devices will land on the other carrier in the next few weeks, so the "grass is greener on the other side" effect should be kept to a bare minimum here. • The Helio Fin

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Helio , 1xRTT , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA Helio today has announced the Fin , the first flip phone in the carrier's lineup. For an MVNO making its name with unique powerhouses like the Ocean , the Fin seems downright ordinary -- but that's not quite the case. For one thing, the Fin bests its A717 and m610 lookalikes (all three of which are manufactured by Samsung, coincidentally) in the thickness game, coming in at a svelte 11.4 millimeters to take the crown as the thinnest flip launched in the US. The Fin also totes a rather potent 3 megapixel sensor in its cam, 100MB of internal storage with microSD expansion up to 4GB, and stereo Bluetooth support. As with all of Helio's more recently launched devices, the Fin includes GPS on board; concurrently with the phone's release, Helio is announcing Garmin Mobile navigation for the Fin and the Ocean -- available for $2.99 per day -- for those times when the integrated Google Maps-based nav just doesn't cut it. Grab Fin starting today for $175. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint, Verizon both announce Motorola RAZR 2 V9m

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Sprint-Nextel , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Neither carrier has launched it just yet, but yes -- the RAZR 2 V9m has now officially found a home on both Sprint and Verizon , with both promising availability in the next few weeks. To split hairs, Sprint will be beating its sworn enemy by a few days, launching its variant on August 22, while Verizon's just promising "September" at this point. Unless AT&T manages to pull a rabbit out of its hat , it looks like the two will be the first in the US to launch what Motorola hopes will be the centerpiece of a turnaround for its flagging handset business. Thanks to EV-DO, attractive styling (yes, we realize we'll be really tired of it in a couple years, but it's still hot for now), and a gargantuan external display with touch controls, the phone is being positioned on the higher end of both carriers' dumbphone offerings -- and the price reflects it. Look for it for $300 with a $50 rebate on Verizon, $250 on Sprint, both on a two-year agreement. • HTC Vogue sees FCC approval

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Thanks to the characteristically loose-lipped folks at the FCC, it looks like HTC's making good on the rumor that a CDMA rendition of the Touch was in the pipeline. The "Vogue" has just gotten hooked up with regulatory approval, and though the documentation is kept to a bare minimum, we've already heard enough to suspect that Qualcomm's pride and joy (CDMA, that is) will be the lucky recipient of a TouchFLO -enabled handset in the not-too-distant future. Where the Vogue is ultimately headed remains to be seen -- but it could be argued that both Sprint and Verizon are in pretty desperate need of a smartphone lineup overhaul, so by all means, bring it on. • Motorola W385, new LG Chocolates live on Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Thinking back to when we first caught wind of it , the turnaround on the ambiguously named VX8550 Chocolate from LG wasn't that bad -- but the same can't be said of Verizon's other retail introduction today, the midrange Motorola W385. This thing's been kicking around as a rumored Big Red device since April at the latest -- and yes, we'll admit that our sense of time is a bit skewed, but that's, like, forever . Anyhoo, pick up the VGA-cam'd, 160 x 128 screen'd W385 for $70 after all the contracts and discounts have been applied; meanwhile, the VX8500 successor can be yours for a nice, round hundie. • Verizon, LG intro new Chocolate

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA We'll spare you the "even sweeter the second time around" punnage that Verizon couldn't help crack and get straight to the point here. Following up its hit VX8500 last year, Verizon has introduced a new Chocolate to its lineup, the aptly-named VX8550 . The re-upped model gets very slightly trimmer by shaving a few hundredths of an inch off every dimension from its predecessor, a new keypad with touch feedback, and something LG is calling "Trace Motion" -- some sort of lighting that works in conjunction with the new nav wheel. Carried over from the original Chocolate are the 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, and wealth of music-related features, though sadly, the rumored 3.5mm jack ain't here. Look for it in stores July 9 in your choice of "Black Cherry" and "Blue Mint." Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint announces Muziq from LG

Filed under: Handsets , LG , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Shoring up its music-friendly line alongside the UpStage from Samsung , Sprint has announced its "Muziq," the Fusic's spiritual successor from LG. While it'll face some serious musicphone competition from across the CDMA / GSM divide later this week , the Muziq holds its own with some interesting features including an integrated FM transmitter that can send tuneage to any FM radio within ten feet. It also offers up stereo Bluetooth, a microSD slot supporting up to 4GB of expansion (a 64MB card is included in box), 1.3 megapixel camera, and sideloading of DRM-free music via USB. Look for it to hit on July 15 for $99 on contract. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint Mogul finally announced

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Sprint-Nextel , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Finally, the fricking Mogul is announced. We're pretty tired of talking about this phone -- now it's time for the device to stand on its own two feet -- er, soft keys. Specs away: EV-DO Rev. 0 (Rev. A comes later with a software update. Tres lame.) 400MHz Qualcomm CPU 64MB RAM, 256MB ROM 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 2 megapixel camera, microSD, 1500mAh battery 4.3 x 2.3 x 0.73-inches $399 + two year contract, available in July... or right now Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • LG enV, now in orange

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA As expected , LG's hip lil' QWERTY number, the VX9900 enV, has re-dropped in orange. The feature list is pretty much the same as the original , they've just gone ahead and gutted the phone's stiff, businesslike black and replaced it with a decidedly brighter hue. Get it online -- it's an online exclusive for the moment -- for $150 on contract. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint rolls out Samsung UpStage in red

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Sprint-Nextel , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA What's better than a black Samsung UpStage ? Why, the very same handset in red, of course. As rumored last week , Sprint has chosen June 18th as launch day for its freshly re-colored UpStage. While nothing new is under the hood, we know some of you out there will appreciate this new -- and perhaps prettier, depending on taste -- iteration of this two-but-really-should-be-one-useful-faced handset. Pricing is set at $99 on a two-year deal and $50 service credit. %Gallery-3921% Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • New Chocolate: LG's VX8550 for Verizon comes into view

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Sorry, Shine hopefuls, the VX8700 will have to hold you over for at least a bit longer. After some buzz had suggested that the FCC-outed VX8550 would be a true Shine slider for Verizon, we now have word from sources that it'll actually be a facelift to the year-old VX8500 Chocolate . For what it's worth, the changes are definitely for the better -- we'd dare say LG's been listening to the VX8500's critics -- with properly placed Send / End buttons, Lock switch on the side, and what appears to be a true 3.5mm headphone jack (still an all-too-rare feature on handsets). Some are reporting that the d-pad is considerably easier to use and possibly "used differently" than its predecessor, though what that means remains to be seen. Documents suggest that it'll hit in black, red, and blue, though if the original is any gauge, we can expect a full rainbow of hues hitting over several months. No word on a release date or price, but with press shots in the pipe, we figure it might show up in time to commemorate the VX8500's one-year anniversary.
