  • iPhone firmware 2.0.2 is out... and angry

Filed under: Software , Apple , OS X digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_2_0_2_Software_Out_Bug_Fixes'; Well okay, we don't know if it's angry or not, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the 2.0.2 update of Apple's phone OS is out there for your downloading pleasure (via iTunes, specifically). So far, all we know is that this iteration tackles those pesky "bugs," but what those exact bugs are, we couldn't say... nor could Apple. We're grabbing now and will update with any exciting developments. Update: Well we've got the new firmware up and running, and it's true -- those bugs have been fixed. Which bugs? Well, it's still hard to say, but our voice suddenly sounds deeper, and we've noticed improved grammar during calls. Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T now hawking iPhone 3Gs online to biz customers

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Apple If you're fortunate enough to have access to a Premier (business, that is) account with AT&T, you're now able to forgo the charade of meandering down to your local store to buy -- or place an order for, more likely -- the iPhone 3G . All three varieties of the best cellphone Apple makes are now available directly through the carrier's B2B online store for the usual $199 / $299 pricing scale; if we had to guess, it's just a matter of time before they'll throw the doors open to the riff raff (read: us), too. We'll drink to that. [Thanks, Vasudev R.] Permalink | Email this | Comments

In a breaking news story, Russia news site Vedomosti has reported that Russia will begin selling iPhones legally next year. This piece of news was given by Yevgeny Butman, the Moscow director of Apple IMC, the Apple vendor for Russia. No single carrier has yet announced plans to sell it, but any operator will be welcome. • Method devised for pwning first-gen iPhones running 2.0 via Windows

Filed under: Software , Apple , OS X Feeling a little left out after yesterday's Mac-based Pwnage Tool festivities , Windows users? Fret not, because the ever-vigilant, ever-studious hacking community has managed to come up with a series of steps to get you back on your feet again with a fully pwned first-gen handset. The whole shebang isn't necessarily for the most casual jailbreakers -- let's just say it isn't quite as straightforward as the Mac procedure yet -- but it'll allegedly get you going if you're starting with an iPhone running 1.1.4 (there are additional steps if you jumped the gun on 2.0, you impatient son of a gun, you -- think of it as penance). As always, exercise extreme caution, understand that this could cause your iPhone to spontaneously combust into a useless pile of metal, plastic, and ash, and let us know how it goes in comments. • iPhone Dev Team unleashes Pwnage Tool 2.0

Filed under: Software , Apple , OS X Sort of. Pwnage Tool 2.0 can't handle 3G iPhones just yet , and we're also faced with the teensy little problem of the Dev Team's server being totally destroyed by downloads already -- mirror please? -- but the friendly little jailbreak app has finally been unleashed upon the earth. We'd never suggest trying out software like this right out of the gate, but, um, let us know how it goes, yeah? [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Dev Team shows off video of 'world's first' jailbroken iPhone 3G

Filed under: Software , Apple , OS X We can't say this is a surprise... but it is sweet to see. The iPhone Dev Team has added a video to their blog showing off the latest version of their upcoming PwnageTool 2.0, along with a video of what they claim is the "world's first" jailbroken iPhone 3G . Check the video after the break, and hit the read link to see how their progress is coming on the new case-cracker. • Jobs: App Store launching with 500 iPhone applications, 25% free

Filed under: Multimedia , Apple var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Jobs_App_Store_launching_with_500_iPhone_apps_25_free'; Steve Jobs told USA Today that the Apple App Store will launch with "more than 500" applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less. "This is the biggest launch of my career," said Jobs. Analyst Tim Bajarin at Creative Strategies said, "When IBM introduced the PC, it was good, but it didn't take off until people started discovering the software." It's these apps then, he adds, that will "dramatically differentiates the iPhone" from Treos and BlackBerrys. Indeed, while consumers are focused on the launch of the iPhone 3G device, it's the App Store which has analysts in such a tizzy. Update : The New York Times reports that 1/3 of all first-wave applications will be games. We also corrected the Bajarin misquote above. • Rogers caves on iPhone 3G plans, offers up 6GB for $30 a month

Filed under: Handsets , Rogers Wireless , Apple Those kind, gentle Canadians have been oh-so-politely demanding a few heads on sticks ever since Rogers' super-spendy iPhone 3G price plans were announced. Well, apparently their cries have been heard, and now Rogers is launching a promotional offer along with the iPhone of 6GB of data for $30 a month -- not quite unlimited data, but close enough -- which can be added on top of any regular voice plan. The promo will be available for iPhone buyers who activate with a three year contract before August 31. Also, perhaps in a bid to dispel some nasty rumors about a major iPhone shortage, Rogers will be hosting 8AM launch day events at six Rogers Plus stores in major Canadian cities, complete with a free breakfast. Mmm, breakfast. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • US iPhone 3G gets unboxed and handled

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , HSDPA , Apple , OS X Continuing this day of iPhone 3G impropriety, the Boy Genius has somehow secured himself a brand-spanking-new iPhone 3G, and has unboxed it for all the world to see. First off, our condolences to the AT&T or Apple employee who will probably lose their job over this one, and then a tip of the hat to BGR for pulling off such a daring stunt. The pictures, however, should be less exciting (since we've been seeing a lot of these today) -- still, nice to know what you're about to get into! We've included a few more shots after the break. • iPhone 3G breaks cover, shows up in Swiss store display

Filed under: Handsets , HSDPA , Apple , OS X You probably saw this one coming, but with that massive slew of countries and partners Apple has wrangled for the new iPhone launch, that July 11th street date was bound to be neglected. So here you have it, courtesy of the french blog Gadget O'Mac, an iPhone 3G on display in a shop in Switzerland. While the shots may be blurry, we at least get to see this thing in the hands of someone other than an Apple employee, and coupled with that Portuguese leak , this should thoroughly whet your appetite for Friday. Check out a few more shots after the break. [Thanks, Florence] Continue reading iPhone 3G breaks cover, shows up in Swiss store display Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • First iPhone 3G caught in the wild, unboxed and handled

Filed under: Handsets , Apple digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/First_iPhone_3G_caught_in_the_wild_unboxed_and_handled'; If you're a prospective iPhone 3G buyer, get ready to make a mess of your keyboard, desk, and any nearby objects that may be hit by spittle flying out of your mouth. Some lucky, lucky Portuguese man or woman has already had the pleasure of cracking open the box and booting up their new device. Feast your eyes on the above pic and one more after the break, and keep reminding yourself that you've only got three more days to wait. Update: We've added a picture of the mysterious SIM removal tool -- the shroud of secrecy is lifted after the break. • AT&T announces iPhone 3G pricing plans

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Apple digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/AT_T_Announces_iPhone_3G_pricing_plans'; Finally, a piece of news we can actually do something with. AT&T today announced its pricing structure for the next iteration of Apple's iPhone -- which you can plunk down money for come 8 am, July 11th. There's not much that's surprising here -- new customers and those eligible for an upgrade will be able to nab the phone for $199 (8GB) or $299 (16GB), while "early upgraders" will have to fork over $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee, of course. The telco says a no-commitment version of the phone will be available for $599 and $699, though it looks like that will come after the initial launch. AT&T appears to be leaning pretty heavily towards the all-in unlimited plans, but there are options if you don't want to go that route. We've sorted out the basics after the break, and included AT&T's "iReady" video -- certainly good for a few chuckles.
