  • Motorola debuts widgets developer challenge

    Motorola announced the launch of the MOTODEV Widget Developer Challenge, encouraging developers to capitalize on the efficient mobile web access and lightweight footprint inherent in the widget model. Timed to coincide with the release of the Moto VE66, the first Motorola mobile device equipped with a widgets framework, the MOTODEV Widget Developer Challenge is open to all members of Motorola's global MOTODEV developer and ISV program (free registration here ) from now through Feb. 27, entrants may submit widgets in three main categories: Best Widget in Category, Best Local Content, and Best Use of APIs. All widgets submitted will be considered for the grand prize and title of Best Overall Widget, with judges evaluating submissions based on uniqueness, effective use of the platform, harmony of design, indispensability and applicability. Motorola will announce the category winners in the spring of 2009--each category grand prize winner and first and second runner-up will earn a cash prize, recognition at CTIA Wireless 2009 and a briefcase full of Motorola handsets and accessories.   • Qualcomm, Amobee team on mobile advertising

    Wireless technologies solutions provider Qualcomm announced it will collaborate with mobile advertising solutions provider Amobee Media Systems to offer mobile ads via Qualcomm's Plaza widget development solution. Following integration of Amobee's ad-serving platform into the Plaza ecosystem of widgets, operators may now create and sell new advertising inventory to brands and agencies that want to deploy and monitor campaigns across various mobile entertainment and communication channels. Amobee will dynamically insert relevant ads into appropriate widgets as well as measure and optimize all campaigns. Qualcomm Internet Services introduced Plaza --a platform-agnostic mobile widget development framework for Web-based mobile applications--in late May. According to Qualcomm, Plaza enables operators to feature catalogs of mobile widgets promising users more efficient and personalized web services across all devices. Amobee's ad-serving solution promises operators dynamically inserted ad impressions spanning WAP browsing, mobile video and music, SMS, MMS, applications and games.   • Samsung brings TouchWiz customizable UI to U.S.

    Samsung Telecommunications America announced the pending launch of TouchWiz, a customizable user interface making its debut in the U.S. market. The UI--previously available internationally via Samsung handsets including the SGH-F480/TouchWiz and Samsung Omnia--boasts specially designed widgets enabling users to customize and personalize their mobile experience, enabling one-touch access to their favorite applications and features. TouchWiz organizes widgets within a tray located on the left side of the phone's homescreen; users drag and drop widgets onto the homescreen to instantly access a desired function or service, with preinstalled icons spotlighting the mobile web, music, messaging services, games, search, navigation services and account updates. In addition, Samsung said each phone supporting TouchWiz may include operator-specific widgets for direct access to the carrier's custom services. Samsung expects to introduce several TouchWiz-enabled touchscreen devices to U.S. consumers over the next six months.   • Opera Mobile 9.5 beta adds widget support

    Browser development firm Opera Software announced the addition of widget support to its Opera Mobile 9.5 beta, which heralds the browser's second release for Windows Mobile and its first for UIQ-based devices. T-Mobile USA previously announced it will offer Opera Mobile with Widgets as part of the operator's web'n'walk mobile Internet initiative--according to Opera, the release of the 9.5 beta enables rival operators to incorporate widgets as well, offering subscribers access to web content via homescreen icons. A number of Opera Widgets are already pre-installed in the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta builds, promising access to Twitter, shopping lists and weather reports--other downloadable widgets are available here . In addition, Opera said it updated its Opera Widget Software Development Kit to include two new features: An Opera Dragonfly debugging tool (optimized for debugging JavaScript, inspecting Cascading Style Sheets and the Document Object Model) and a Widget Manager for on-device testing. Opera will celebrate the release of the revamped SDK with the X Widget Challenge, offering $10,000 in cash prizes for the best cross-device widget submissions. Details are available here .     Mobile search solutions provider Mobile Content Networks announced its white-label MobileSearch.net platform will power search for Nokia's WidSets mobile content consumption, creation and sharing service. According to MCN, WidSets Search will enable users to efficiently discover new widgets by offering a brief description and view of the widget for immediate download--the service will also include multiple content and information channels, including images, news, weather and related information.
