  • Verizon admits: some of our employees have accessed Barack Obama’s personal cell phone account without authorization

Verizon Wireless, North America’s soon to be No. 1 mobile carrier, has issued a short press release which announces that a personal cell phone account of Barack Obama, USA’s President-Elect, has been accessed, without authorization, by several Verizon employees. The account is for a simple voice flip phone (hence not for a smartphone) and, luckily, [...]
  • Verizon employees hacked Obama's cell phone account

Verizon Wireless has said that some employees had accessed and viewed President-elect Barack Obama's personal cell phone account without authorization. The carrier said all employees who accessed the account, either with or without authorization, which had been inactive for months, had been put on immediate leave with pay. "We apologize to President-elect Obama and will work to keep the trust our customers place in us every day," Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said in a statement. The phone was a simple flip-phone and not a smartphone or a BlackBerry used for email or data services. Verizon said it was looking into the kinds of access that employees had, and that those who accessed the account for legitimate business purposes will be placed back in their positions and those who accessed the account improperly will face disciplinary action. Verizon spokesman Jeffrey Nelson would not comment beyond the official statement. The news comes as some security experts question whether Obama will need to stop using his BlackBerry as he assumes the presidency, mostly because of concerns over security breaches such as this. • Vodafone to keep Verizon Wireless stake, for now

Vodafone is going to hold on to its 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless for now, but remains open about its options. Speaking at a conference in Barcelona organized by Morgan Stanley, Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao said the company remains committed to its stake in Verizon Wireless at the current time, but is always considering its options. For his part, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg said in June that he still wanted complete control of the wireless venture, but said he did not expect Vodafone to sell in the near term. Speculation has swirled around the partnership for some time and reached a fever pitch in the summer of 2007 when Vodafone came under increasing pressure to sell its stake. But Vodafone reiterated its commitment to the venture at that point and flatly said it was not selling. Morgan Stanley analysts have calculated Vodafone's stake--excluding the recent $28.1 billion acquisition of Alltell--to be between $40 billion and $50 billion. • Samsung's Omnia found in the unforgiving wilds of a Verizon store

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Verizon Wireless , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA They're apparently not for sale yet -- stores don't even know what the pricing situation is -- but Verizon has starting shipping Samsung Omnias to at least some of its stores. For anyone not needing the global...um, "globalness" of the Saga or the QWERTY-ness of the upcoming Touch Pro , the Omnia certainly makes for an interesting option -- espeically in light of the TouchWiz support and the 5-megapixel cam. With units in stores now, it can't be long until we can actually buy these, can it? Sounds like RIM's on track for a hit -- any of you have any luck scoring a Storm today? How'd it go? Digging the SurePress screen? Hit us up in comments! • Get a Storm for a C-note less than usual

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA If the BlackBerry Storm's $199.99 retail price on contract after rebate isn't sitting particularly well with you, there's an alternative you may want to investigate. LetsTalk, purveyors of the free Bold , have outdone themselves with a rebate-laden $99 Storm; granted, the catch is that you've got to sign up for a plan package of $69.99 or higher, but let's be honest -- plenty of Storm buyers are going to be doing just that anyway. • Samsung Omnia makes official Verizon appearance

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Verizon Wireless , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA Not that we've any reason to be shocked here, but Samsung's Omnia is indeed coming to Verizon Wireless. 'Course, most everyone with any remote affiliation to Big Red is frenzied over that other phone today, but those with a soft spot for Windows Mobile 6.1 may want to give this one a bit of attention. You know the highlight specs by now -- a 5-megapixel camera / camcorder, full HTML browser and an expansive touchscreen -- but the nitty-gritty details are still being withheld. As of now, the link on Samsung's website tunnels straight to an error page, forcing us to be content with the knowledge that somehow, someday, this phone is destined for a life on VZW's shelves. Enlarged screengrab is after the jump. • PE Obama’s Phone Records Breached By Verizon Employees

Verizon Wireless today admitted that some of its employees had been looking into President-elect Barack Obama's cell phone billing records. In a release, the company said: “This week we learned that a number of Verizon Wireless employees have, without authorization, accessed and viewed President-Elect Barack Obama’s personal cell phone account. The account has been inactive for several months. The device on the account was a simple voice flip-phone, not a BlackBerry or other smartphone designed for e-mail or other data services. “All employees who have accessed the account -- whether authorized or not -- have been put on immediate leave, with pay. As the circumstances of each individual employee’s access to the account are determined, the company will take appropriate actions. Employees with legitimate business needs for access will be returned to their positions, while employees who have accessed the account improperly and without legitimate business justification will face appropriate disciplinary action. “We apologize to President-elect Obama and will work to keep the trust our customers place in us every day.” This is a good enough reason for all of us to question the privacy policies of our phone companies, which have time and again shown that they are ready to play loose-and-easy with their customer's privacy. Of course, they are known to use underhanded tactics to position themselves as the good guys, though they are anything but. [digg=http://digg.com/tech_news/President_Elect_Obama_s_Phone_Records_Breached_By_Verizon] In my opinion, this breach -- regardless of what your political leanings -- is not a good thing. If President-elect Obama's records are not safe, who is to say a disgruntled employee won't mess with those of private citizens with whom they have an axe to grind. What do you think Verizon's punishment should be?
