  • T-Mobile's data coverage maps now have added 3G flavor

Filed under: T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Misc Check it out, from this zoom level Chicago's looking flush as far as T-Mobile 3G is concerned -- yeah, that's right, it seems they've gotten to a point where they're actually willing to show it off. We're betting T-Mobile's Android-based G1 announcement that's set for tomorrow was the impetus for this update, and we suspect we'll learn more about the network then. Feel free to put the site through its paces in your neck of the woods and let us know if you're one of the lucky places. Hit the read link to play with the map, but make sure you tick the "data coverage" option at the bottom of the page first. [Via SlashPhone ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • T-Mobile to have 3G live in 21 markets by end of October

Filed under: T-Mobile , HSDPA , UMTS If you've invested in one of those Sony Ericsson TM506s being offered by T-Mobile, it certainly helps if you've got some place to take advantage of its carrier-first HSDPA support -- and while it's going to be a while (a good, long while) before you find it blanketing every square inch of T-Mobile's coverage, you'll at least have a few more cities in which to play by the time that all-important G1 launches next month. Thirteen cities have officially launched so far, with another 8 coming online in the coming weeks, another 7 beyond that by the end of the year, and "meaningful expansion to additional customers and markets through 2009." In case you'd like 'em to be showing a little more hustle here (and who wouldn't?), it looks like the government is still holding things up ; T-Mobile specifically mentions in its press release that it's continuing to "work closely and effectively together" with the Departments of Commerce, Justice, and Defense to speed things along and free up AWS spectrum as quickly as possible. In the meantime, follow the break for the full list of cities that'll be 3G-ready by the end of 2008. • T-Mobile flips the 3G-switch on Philadelphia

T-Mobile’s 3G network rollout seems to really be gaining steam. The latest market to get turned on to T-Mobile’s 1700Mhz AWS 3G network is apparently Philadelphia. A Howard Forums user apparently started seeing 3G data speeds yesterday, essentially confirming that T-Mobile decided to flip the 3G-switch on Philly. The “City of Brotherly Love” has got [...]
  • Samsung T919 - Another T-Mobile 3G handset hits the FCC

T-Mobile’s AWS 1700Mhz 3G network is starting to take its first steps in to the world of nationwide 3G, and with T-Mobile expected to bring more than a couple dozen additional 1700Mhz 3G markets online by October, it makes sense that manufacturers are starting to warm up to T-Mobile’s own special flavor of 3G. The 1700Mhz [...]
  • Sony Ericsson's TM506: T-Mobile AWS 3G support included

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , UMTS When Sony Ericsson's TM506 was leaked earlier this month, there was no mention made of the flip's support of AWS 3G . Thankfully (thankfully!), the official launch brings along confirmed support for the protocol. SE is linking up with T-Mobile USA once again, providing a stylishly small handset that sports a 2-megapixel camera, built-in A-GPS (TeleNav), stereo Bluetooth support, an M2 card slot, multimedia playback, outer / inner displays and 9.5-hours of GSM talk time (250-hours on standby). Curiously, no price is mentioned, but you can find out for yourself when this lands in stores early next month. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • M2Z asks FCC to reject more AWS-3 interference tests

M2Z Networks said it has submitted evidence to the FCC to confirm that no further interference testing is needed to auction off the AWS-3 spectrum, which will be designed for an operator willing to offer free broadband wireless services. T-Mobile has been a vocal opponent of the plan, saying the FCC is rushing into an auction without adequately testing for potential interference. T-Mobile is the largest spectrum holder in the adjacent AWS-1 band and is concerned about interference. M2Z and T-Mobile have been trading barbs over the issue. M2Z says its latest filing with the FCC specifically rebuts the false assertions of T-Mobile based on its recent test, but also provides reference to two recent additional tests on the exact same interference scenarios that were conducted by the International Telecommunications Union and the United Kingdom's spectrum regulator, Ofcom. The recent tests also contradict T-Mobile's assertions. According to M2Z, the fact that T-Mobile and the other carriers are now seeking an additional fifth round of testing on mobile to mobile interference issues without addressing any of the countervailing evidence in front of the FCC is further proof that these large phone companies are using "interference testing" as a veiled attempt to prevent nationwide broadband competition. The FCC wants to create a 25-megahertz swath of spectrum that would support a nationwide license. The AWS-3 spectrum would require the licensee to dedicate 25 percent of its network capacity to free broadband service, install a network-based Internet filtering system to block pornography and allow open access to third-party devices and applications. • T-Mobile already lighting up 3G network in Las Vegas and Austin?

T-Mobile’s 3G network has been a long time coming. After winning the 1700Mhz AWS spectrum that it needed to launch its own special flavor of 3G networks in the US, T-Mobile was forced by the US government to stand-by as bureaucratic agencies proceeded to vacate the spectrum. And, after initially launching their 3G network in [...]
  • FCC says auction decision won't happen until September

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said on Friday that the commission won't make a decision on whether to re-auction the 700 MHz D-Block spectrum or to auction the AWS-3 spectrum until at least September. Martin says that the commission wants more time to review comments and to allow the FCC engineers to determine whether there is a chance of interference occurring between the AWS-3 spectrum and the AWS spectrum won by incumbent carrier T-Mobile USA. T-Mobile has been opposed to the AWS-3 auction, which requires the winning bidders use at least 25 percent of their spectrum for free wireless broadband service. T-Mobile fears that the AWS-3 wireless Internet service will interfere with the company's plans to deploy wireless broadband in its AWS spectrum. For more: - see this article (sub. req.) • T-Mobile gets official with 3G 1700Mhz network in New York - UMTS/HSDPA data and voice

Last week we saw T-Mobile getting ready for a primetime launch of its long-awaited 3G network on its 1700Mhz AWS spectrum. There were reports that the 3G launch covered voice-only, leaving data-hungry T-Mobile subscribers left wanting for high-speed UMTS/HSDPA data speeds with T-Mobile's initial 3G launch in New York. Then we got reports from the [...]
  • T-Mobile 3G network to be voice-only for now

Talk about a let-down. The T-Mobile USA 3G network launch that we thought was going to usher in a new age of high-speed 3G data for T-Mobile users in the US turns out to be nothing more than a voice-only service for now. According to T-Mobile, "the first phase of [T-Mobile's] 3G roll out supports [...]
