  • Top five handset manufacturers get together for treehuggin' chargers

Filed under: LG , Motorola , Nokia , Samsung , Sony Ericsson , Accessories Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG, and Sony Ericsson probably don't see eye-to-eye on very many topics, but thankfully, they can all agree that Planet Earth is worth saving (or, at the very least, they can all agree that getting hated on by Greenpeace sucks). The five handset juggernauts have announced a common five-star rating system for phone chargers, making it easier for buyers to figure out which chargers consume the least energy; adapters that have features like automatic standby when the phone is finished charging will be awarded higher ratings. Nokia's been saying for some time that a ridiculous amount of energy is wasted every year by chargers that are idling their watts away plugged into fully-charged phones, so this could be a major step toward getting charger manufacturers to produce more advanced models en masse. • Sony Ericsson C905a with AT&T firmware means... well, you know

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS That "more bars in more places" startup sequence there look familiar? We're not rocket scientists, granted, but first of all, we have no idea what rocket science has to do with the mobile phone industry. Secondly, seeing a carrier-branded firmware show up on a hot new (and somewhat unexpected) model is bound to get some gears turning. The whole K850 debacle reminds us that a branded device can go all the way up to the last minute and still get tossed to the wayside -- and there's certainly precedent for such a tragic fate to happen to a Sony Ericsson, specifically -- but we can't help but let our minds wander to the possibilities of an 8-megapixel beast like the C905 landing on AT&T in the near future. Some lucky cat was offering a US-friendly C905a model for sale (don't bother logging into eBay, it's already been snatched up) allegedly burned with an AT&T ROM, suggesting that they're either looking into offering it or, at the very least, Sony Ericsson was pitching it to the boys and girls in Atlanta. If it's still getting tossed around, let us just voice our opinion here: yes, AT&T. Do it. • Motorola and SE pinpointed, may face tough time "weathering the storm"

Filed under: Culture , Handsets , Motorola , Sony Ericsson , Studies , Misc No, not that Storm silly -- that storm . As cellphone users around the globe put off that once imminent upgrade purchase in order to make the mortgage and feed the family, ( most ) handset makers are obviously feeling the pinch. A fresh report from The Wall Street Journal pretty much reiterates much of what we've already heard , but still dives deeper into which companies are best positioned to escape the madness. As predicted, HTC, Apple and Nokia were all pinpointed as being able to make it through tough economic times without losing their proverbial hats, but both Motorola and Sony Ericsson could be facing insurmountable odds. Granted, it's not like either firm has really been killing it of late, but it's a pretty bad time to be struggling , regardless. The takeaway? Don't be shocked to see some wild stuff go down in the mobile space -- all bets are off at this point. • The handsets of GITEX 2008: HTC, SE and TechFaith

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Sony Ericsson , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Given that Dubai pretty much has it out for every other spectacle in the entire universe, it's no shock to see the mecca pick up a major consumer electronics trade show of its own. This year's GITEX 2008 has come and gone, but there are still images left to remind us of the show that was. PocketPCDubai was fortunate enough to tour the show floor with a camera in hand, and while the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 wasn't a shocker, there were quite a few intriguing WinMo handsets in attendance. For a look at what all TechFaith had to offer (along with a few shots of the luscious Touch HD from HTC), head on down to the read link. • Keepin' it real fake, part CLXVI: the Sany Ericssan X1 with Wyndowz Mobil

Filed under: Handsets , Others , GSM Strategic advantages Sany Ericssan holds over Sony Ericsson: A quarterly sales volume measured in the hundreds is considered a rousing success. Neither Sany nor Ericssan have any intention of pulling out of the joint venture. "Outsourcing" of industrial design saves time, money, and staff. None of those pesky Windows Mobile licensing fees to worry about. GPRS data speed isn't a problem -- it's a way of life. • Sony Ericsson's W595 toyed with on video

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Looking for a bit of video on Sony Ericsson's W595 , are you? If so, you've come to the right place, as Megawhat has hosted up a hands-on clip toying with the fanciful slider. Far and away the reviewer's favorite feature is the easy upload to YouTube once the handset logs a video clip, and admittedly, it does seem to work well. Hit the read link for 3 minutes (and 3 seconds) in SE heaven. Sony Ericsson's W595 toyed with on video originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 23:15:00 EST. • Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1a prodded by the FCC

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , Windows Mobile If you've read through our thorough review of Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 , by now you're probably chomping at any number of bits to get your hands on the device. Well, thanks to the FCC, you can rest easier knowing you're one step closer to actually touching, holding, and hugging the phone (the US-destined X1a, that is). Amongst other things, the documents seem to disclose -- we'll stop short of saying confirm -- that a black version will be in play when it arrives in the States, though we feel that page 46 of the 114 page test report was more revealing in many ways. Don't believe us? Hit the read link and take a look for yourself. Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1a prodded by the FCC originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 12:09:00 EST. • Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 makes date with US: Black Friday for $799.99

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA At long last, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 has a firm date for its launch into the topsy-turvy US market. Those who've been holding off time and again in anticipation of this WinMo 6.1 powerhouse can finally pat themselves on the back, as those rumors of the handset slipping into next year were greatly exaggerated. In fact, SE's doing itself a huge favor by getting this gem into the market place prior to the holiday season, and better still, on Black Friday proper. You heard right -- while most folks are frantically scouring B&M floors for door buster deals, those with copious quantities of disposable income can waltz on over to a Sony Electronics outlet or any of its authorized retailers on November 28th and pick one up. Wondering if this marvel is worth $799.99? Check out our review for a little insight, and peek the full release just after the break. Oh, and before you ask, there's no word yet on a subsidized version for any US carrier. • Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 review

Filed under: Handsets , Reviews , HTC , Sony Ericsson , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Sony Ericsson has produced some exceptional handsets over the years, with certain gems like the W950 , W300i and W580i (just to name a few) catching the eyes and hearts of casual and hardcore mobile fanatics alike. Even so, it's hard to argue that any single phone in the outfit's history has caused more of a stir than the XPERIA X1 . Sure, half of that is because we here in America have been waiting on the thing since February , but the other is due to pure, unadulterated sex appeal. 2008 has been a banner year for smart- / touchscreen-based handsets, and even though this one is lagging behind most of the other guys in terms of time to market, the X1 is still a formidable rival. We had a chance to spend a few quality days with the North America-bound X1a ($799.99; ships November 28th) -- which is different than the X1i that has already landed in certain parts of the globe -- and if you've come here looking for opinions, you haven't come in vain. Follow us past the break for a look at the pros, the cons and the middling minutiae of SE's slickest smartphone yet. • UIQ Technology puts entire staff on notice of dismissal

Filed under: Motorola , Sony Ericsson , Misc Ugh, this is just downright depressing no matter how you spin it. Sure, it's just the reality of business and all, but it's no fun to hear that 270 staffers will soon be looking for employment when UIQ Technology finishes climbing into the grave. After hacking 200 jobs in June and being coined " dead " by Sony Ericsson's Patrick Olson, All About Symbian has it that the company has put its remaining employees "on notice of dismissal." We're told that SE has agreed to "continue funding the company on a by month by month basis in order to allow it to investigate options for the future," but from the outside looking in, we'd say the outlook is bleak. Thankfully, it sounds like those affected will at least be assisted as they exit, but now would probably be an opportune time to shed a tear for UIQ as we knew it. • Ericsson: 20 megapixel cellphones shooting Full HD video in 4 years

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson It's tough to predict the future, especially with cutbacks to R&D budgets in the face of a global economic slowdown. Still, it's always nice to see a forward-looking corporate-slide related to mobile handsets from the taller, blonder half of that Sony Ericsson partnership. LTE and fast CPUs are certainly no surprise, nor is that 1,024 x 768 XGA screen resolution that Japan's superphones are already bumping up against . The most compelling vision is that of the embedded camera sensors: 12-20 megapixels capable of recording Full HD video by 2012. Adding more fuel to firey speculation that handsets are about to find themselves embroiled in a megapixel war . Fine by us, just as long the optics and image processing are there to support such a resolution. Even though 12-20 megapixels seems high compared to the 5-8 megapixel cell phones we see today, those numbers are entirely within reason when you recall that Samsung hit 10 megapixels in Korea two years ago. In fact, we wouldn't be suprised in the least to find Ericsson's mythical device on the market well prior to 2012. Combined, these features certainly make for a tantalizing glimpse at the wireless handset future.
