  • Sony chief admits to tough times for Sony Ericsson

In an interview with Germany's Welt Online magazine, Sony CEO Howard Stringer admitted it's been a difficult year for Sony Ericsson but said buying out a partner is not an easy thing to do. He added that it's important to be nimble but that being nimble isn't easy, particularly when you are confined by a joint venture. "We and Ericsson are always discussing ways of making Sony Ericsson as successful as it possibly can be," Stringer said. However, when questioned about whether the joint venture will exist in three years, Stringer cast some doubts on the JV's future. "We have to work together again as we did two years ago or the joint venture will have to find its own solution." • Sony CEO considering dumping Ericsson for sucking so much at mobile phone business lately

We first got wind of a possible falling out between Sony and Ericsson (collectively known as Sony Ericsson; who would’ve known?) due to the the inexplicable dwindling of their mobile phone sales a few months back. Now, Sony CEO Howard Stringer is reviving the old rumor once again. In a recent interview with German newspaper Die [...]

  • Tonight we’re at Sony Ericsson’s summer party

I’m looking forward to meeting the Sony Ericsson chaps. Whilst they make some really good handsets, I’m thoroughly depressed by their lack of perceived innovation. Candybar after Candybar after Candybar. Show me the innovation! And that doesn’t mean putting Windows Mobile on to a Sony. We shall be [...]
  • Review of GSM/UMTS-handset Sony Ericsson W980i

Mobile-review have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson W980 . Here is their final impression. Impressions The W980i’s reception quality was never an issue, nor was its ring tone volume – it got through in most situations. The vibro alert is a tad above average strength-wise. The W980 has already arrived and retails for around 420 Euro. It’s not a music-minded solution per se – much like most other Walkman-branded phones these days, it’s a fashion-savvy phone with a very unconventional design and a pretty decent feature pack. As far as drawbacks of the W980 go, the only serious thing I can think of is its camera location, but that’s about it. As for the rest, this handset is so likable, that I don’t what else I can add it to this verdict – it’s one unique phone. Its materials, quirky outer display, good-looking themes and bundled pedometer add up to one solid offering. Plus the W logo on the external display rotates as you turn the W980 around, which is another undocumented way of using the pedometer in this phone. All in all, the Sony Ericsson W980 is the epitome of “Sony Style”: sophisticated and well-designed. But there is one thing I didn’t do all that often with it – I almost never used the W980’s music player. Well, maybe for some podcasts, but that’s about it. However, those who have never seen or used top-notch dedicated music players will be quite content with what this phone has to offer. Even its radio application has the Clear Sound mode literally tacked on it – I just wish there was some way to disable it. To say that the W980 will be a mass-market device would be a daring prediction. It’s not even about its music player or audio quality. The real reason is that Sony Ericsson’s music-savvy flagships have never been particularly popular, bar this line-up’s first member. On top of that the W980 is not the cheapest phone around, which leads us to believe it will follow in the footsteps of the Sony Ericsson W900i. Basically, the latter was merely a likable handset that people-in-the-know used to buzz about. And while the W980 targets a slightly different niche (fashion-conscious youth, that is), it won’t fare much better than the W900i, but to Sony Ericsson’s credit be it said, as far as this audience goes, they are spot on with this handset.
  • Review of GSM-handset Sony Ericsson W302i

Mobile-review have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson W302 . Here is their final impression. Impressions Our major concern was whether the W302i’s call quality was any different from other Sony Ericsson branded phones; and to our delight it didn’t fall flat on this front. Or, it’d be better to put it this way, it fared just as well as other offerings from Sony Ericsson with no significant highs or downs. On the other hand, its earpiece quality somewhat disappointed us – sound came through with a good deal of background hissing and static (it’s not that loud, but it’s there) and voices were not as rich. All in all, it’s a typical budget solution that can’t stand comparison with high-end phones, such as the W880i/W890i. On the loudest volume settings it lets a lot of noise and static slip into sound. Some might think we are just ranting about these minor things, but on the other hand, Nokia’s entry-level phones utilize the same components as all other handsets in the range. But then again, how many people will actually know about these shortcomings before buying the phone? Very few, that’s for sure. The W302i’s ring tone volume is also average, with a lot of creaking noises at top volume settings in sophisticated tracks. The vibro alert isn’t particularly strong, but it can get the job done. Those who have owned a Sony Ericsson branded phone, the W302i will feel like something quite different, if not a step back. No disappointments will befall people who are new to the world of Sony Ericsson; on the contrary, they will think that the W302i has everything exactly the way it’s supposed to be. For instance, you won’t be able to mark several files in a list, but once you decide to Send some content, you will be offered to send one file, several or all at once. This setup is abound on Samsung’s phones, but Sony Ericsson can be better than that. The A050’s attempt to cross the three-button layout with the latest user interface (yet without multitasking functionality) only adds more confusion to Sony Ericsson’s platform portfolio. While most of the time the W302i will be blazing fast, sometimes you will notice sudden slow-downs; unfortunately we failed to figure out where they came from. At times like this, it’s difficult to turn the phone’s screen back on – it may seem that the handset is shut down, but after a couple of seconds it gets back to normal. But if you can put up with these niggles and don’t expect flawless performance from this entry-level phone, then you should do just fine. By and large, those who have never owned a Sony Ericsson phone before, the W302i isn’t a bad choice at all. If only it weren’t for its overly hefty price tag in the neighborhood of 169 Euros (RSP for Europe). When it will arrive in October, the W880i will retail for only a tiny bit more, which will be a complete disaster for its lower-end sibling, since it’s got all the features the W302i has on offer(except for the FM-radio) and surpasses the latter on many fronts, especially in terms of materials and wow-effect. Having wrapped an ODM model into a recognizable design, Sony Ericsson prefer to charge a lot for it – in fact, this may be deemed a premium for its sophisticated curves and brand name. But the truth is, the W302i won’t experience lack of competition – there are lots of phones out there that are just as functional (take the Sagem my721X for example, which is almost an exact copy of the W302i). Later this year, in October, some markets will see a pared...

Below is the text of the letter: In the Russian representation Companies Sony Ericsson The problems with the quality of phone company Sony Ericsson - G502, C702 I call on you in connection with the emergence of problems with the quality of several models of Sony Ericsson, supplied to the Russian market. Previous treatment of the failure of the keys on the phone Sony Ericsson S500i gave the information that you did not at that time and allowed you to resolve the issue of warranty repairs in a relatively short time (about a month). I hope that in this case the company could take a correct and above all rapid decision to repair bad models. At test bed equipment wear and tear was discovered, it is about one month's use of the device at an average consumer. From this we can conclude that the mass marriage. An indirect evidence of the seriousness of the problem, are also massive reviews buyers, faced with it. In particular, you can explore the forum at our resource - http://forum.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=59557. Statements hot line at Sony Ericsson, ignored staff, stated that on this issue are unknown. In a telephone conversation this was also mentioned. In the service centers of Sony Ericsson in the Russian Federation, on this issue do not know, reject such treatment, nor guarantee related to the improper operation of the device. We asked the leading service company with a request to draw attention to this and other new models, to collect all possible statistics and submit it to the company. I hope that you will get the first reviews are already in the coming days. Retail chains do not take machines back and not exchanging them, as well as consider such a marriage rough exploitation. In our opinion, you need to bring to the attention of all partners, not just service centers on the existence of such a problem and how to address it (exchange, return, repair). Please tell us what measures are taken to minimize harm to consumers on this issue and recognizes whether the factory by marriage.
