  • Sony Ericsson C905a with AT&T firmware means... well, you know

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS That "more bars in more places" startup sequence there look familiar? We're not rocket scientists, granted, but first of all, we have no idea what rocket science has to do with the mobile phone industry. Secondly, seeing a carrier-branded firmware show up on a hot new (and somewhat unexpected) model is bound to get some gears turning. The whole K850 debacle reminds us that a branded device can go all the way up to the last minute and still get tossed to the wayside -- and there's certainly precedent for such a tragic fate to happen to a Sony Ericsson, specifically -- but we can't help but let our minds wander to the possibilities of an 8-megapixel beast like the C905 landing on AT&T in the near future. Some lucky cat was offering a US-friendly C905a model for sale (don't bother logging into eBay, it's already been snatched up) allegedly burned with an AT&T ROM, suggesting that they're either looking into offering it or, at the very least, Sony Ericsson was pitching it to the boys and girls in Atlanta. If it's still getting tossed around, let us just voice our opinion here: yes, AT&T. Do it. • Sony Ericsson's new ad shows off the C905's camera and absolutely nothing else

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson An ad campaign shot entirely on a mobile phone camera? Well, Sony Ericsson -- claiming to be the first -- has done it, using the C905 , ostensibly to prove what an awesome (8.1-megapixel) camera it boasts. The results can be found exclusively in December's issue of FHM, and are what Sony Ericsson Marketing Director David Hilton calls an "amazing opportunity" to "show off the capabilities" of the Cyber-shot. So let's just get this straight: your ad uses a professional model, a fashion photographer, professional lighting, and makeup, not to mention all that retouching, and we're supposed to be impressed with the camera? Okay, we'll admit it: we're pretty impressed. • Sony Ericsson's 8-megapixel C905 makes sweet love to the FCC

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS So what do you think they take pictures of in an FCC lab when they've got an 8-megapixel cameraphone handy? Oh, come on -- you know the technicians lucky enough to fiddle with fresh gadget after delicious, fresh gadget as they burn through specific absorption rate paperwork engage in a little extracurricular activity from time to time. Our guess, honestly, is that they probably snap that scary apparatus that looks like a human head made out of gelatin and MMS it to their daughter with a message like "look what I found in the ditch, honey!" Of course, that prank only works once before little Julie figures out what daddy's up to, then all hell breaks loose as she tips off the gadget blogs that there's an unannounced Sony Ericsson on the way. Yeah, the C905 . Thanks, Julie. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Sony Ericsson's 8.1MP C905 Cyber-shot cellphone gets unboxed on video

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE Oh sure, you've seen the 8.1-megapixel C905 Cyber-shot in the wild and in our very own hands , but have you seen it unboxed entirely on video? No? Well, today's your lucky day. Sony Ericsson's shutterbug-of-a-cellphone is a touch on the thick side and doesn't come with too many extras (you know, like a detachable zoom lens ), but as SE always manages to do, it has delivered a pretty enviable beast all things considered. Have a look at the video after the break. [Thanks, Gregg] Continue reading Sony Ericsson's 8.1MP C905 Cyber-shot cellphone gets unboxed on video Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • What’s Sony Ericsson’s C905 8 megapixel monster all about?

With the release of the Sony Ericsson C905 imminent, it looks as though the days of the stand alone digital snapper may well be numbered. It’s not as if we haven’t crossed paths with the C905 before, but seeing as it’s about to be unleashed, it’s worth taking a thorough look at just what all [...]
  • Sony Ericsson's C905, Z780 and X1 hands-on

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson We got our grubby mitts all over the latest and greatest from Sony Ericsson, including that new C905 8 megapixel monstrosity, and, of course, the Xperia X1 . The C905 is certainly no slouch in the camera department, with that for-serious Xenon flash and dedicated camera keys, but you'll pay for it in thickness -- the C905 is a good deal thicker than its Walkman counterparts, though that does leave room for a nicely formed slide-out keypad. The C905 is capable of geotagging pictures, but can't upload on the fly to photo services just yet like Nokia's new phones, though such capability is in the works. While the C905 seems finely honed for a specific purpose, the Z780 flip phone seems much more plain jane in comparison, with a rather large size despite its "slim proportions" and a lack of detailing in styling to make it really pop. But, of course, who needs all that featurephone nonsense when you've got the X1 staring 'em all down? We got to twiddle around with an out-of-battery Xperia for a minute, and it's certainly one of the thickest and heaviest phones headed for the market in the near future -- though the upside of that is some glorious build quality, an immense WVGA screen and an expansive, highly touchable keyboard. SE certainly does seem to have something for everybody, but with Moto apparently working on an 8 megapixel camera of its own, and touchscreen rivals to the X1 hogging all the spotlight, SE's isn't looking at an easy road to bumping back that profitability. Oh, and in case you were interested, the gallery below also includes the W760 sporting a black finish, a pink-ish red-ish W580 and the wonderfully tiny W350i . • Sony Ericsson's C905 shutterbug (and friends) in the wild

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Press shots are often beautiful, but the problem with 'em is that they're usually about as real as Joan Rivers' face -- not the best way to get a real impression of what a device looks and acts like in the flesh. GSM Helpdesk scored some hands-on time today with the full range of Sony Ericsson's new wares, and the headliner of the bunch, the mighty 8.1 megapixel C905 , is looking ready for battle. Not literal battle, of course, but battle in the marketplace with a whole host of feature phones being released this year from its top rivals -- particularly important at a time when market share is falling . The 2.4-inch display is apparently "clear" and plenty impressive for managing your extensive photo library, and we're digging the curvy styling; UIQ would've been nice, but we suppose the dumbphone set deserves killer cameras too . Also pictured are the low-end J132 and K330 , the S302 (which with a 2 megapixel camera, may not be worthy of the name "Snapshot"), and the F305 gaming phone. We'd had high hopes for the F305 -- as we do for pretty much anything that can be shaken to control games -- but the live shots here are leaving us a little underwhelmed. Maybe the white version will do it justice? Read - C905, S302 Read - F305 Read - J132, K330 Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Tomorrow’s Sony Ericsson launch today: Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot and S302 Snap-shot get official

  • Sony Ericsson P10, G702, F305, S302, and C905 product pages leaked

Sony Ericsson has already prepared what are to be the product pages of the upcoming handsets that they will launch at tomorrow’s event in Amsterdam. • Sony Ericsson's 8.1 megapixel C905 breaks free

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , EDGE , UMTS , HSUPA No surprises here but at least Sony Ericsson's C905 Cyber-shot is now official. As a camera, we're talking Xenon flash, face detection, image stabilization and 8.1 megapixels crammed into a tiny sensor of unspecified make or dimensions. As a phone we're looking at quad-band GSM (9-hours talk / 380 hours standby) and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 on the C905a worldphone variant. It also comes packing an auto-rotating, 2.4-inch scratch-resistant QVGA display, aGPS with Google Maps, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, TV-out, 2GB of included Memory Stick Micro (M2), and WiFi with DLNA support when this slider is loosed upon the globe in Q4. P.S. We'll have a gallery up in a few. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Sony Ericsson’s CyberShot C905 makes an appearance, again

I know it’s really hard to keep something as big as an 8.1-megapixel-toting cell phone under the wraps for a long time, but then only Apple can do that without so much as a whiff of what’s cooking until the last minute. The last time, we brought you a blurry picture confirming that Sony Ericsson’s [...]
  • Sony Ericsson's C905 set revealed in yet another "leaked" vid

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson Seems the concept of keeping things under your hat before your big dog and pony show has been completely lost on the brass at Sony Ericsson. Today's "leaked" bit of goodness shows us Sony Ericsson's Shiho C905 in all its multi-megapixel -- 8 of them to be exact -- glory in a fairly revealing video spot. Sure, we're not treated to all the dirty details, but there's enough shown to more than tease about this upcoming wonder of mobile as digital camera. The date is apparently set for the 17th June, so we've only a couple days left to wait. Although, at this point, this is starting to feel like we've already peeked at all the prezzies in the closet before Christmas morning. We're really going to need a nice term to describe these "accidental" leaks by Sony Ericsson, any thoughts?
