  • One in three mobiles to be smartphones by 2013

As handset manufactures push smartphone features into their lower-range offerings, more and more people are likely to pick up a smartphone in the coming years. New research from ABI Research indicates that 31% of all mobile phones in 2013 will be a smartphone. Currently, one in ten cellphones are smartphones. "Smart operating systems are continually [...]
  • 800,000 HTC Touch handsets out the door in just 3 months

Apple isn’t the only player that can send 1 million handsets out the door in a matter of months. It looks like HTC is following in the Apple iPhone’s footsteps - they’ve managed to ship 800,000 HTC Touch handsets in a mere 3 months! We should mention that HTC’s achievement has to be tempered by the fact that Apple and HTC are competing in completely different markets. We’ll have to wait for the iPhone to launch overseas and the HTC Touch to hit US shores before we can get a clear picture of exactly how close these tww manufacturers are in shipment volumes. And it looks like HTC isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, either. They’ve announced that they expect to ship 15 million smartphones in 2008 - that’s a 30% increase over 2007 shipment volumes. Congrats to you, HTC! We’re not all that surprised to see that you’ve been doing so well, but it’s nice to put a nice, round number to your success. Keep on keepin’ on in Taiwan! • Qualcomm 3G chipsets in good shape - HTC set to launch 10 new Windows Mobile smartphones with Qualcomm 3G chips

Even with the US ITC having banned Qualcomm’s 3G chipsets from US import, the US-based chip-maker doesn’t seem to be hurting for business. Our favorite Windows Mobile smartphone maker, HTC, has announced that they will be launching 10 new WinMo smartphones using Qualcomm’s new 3G technology. HTC is the first smartphone maker to use Qualcomm’s new dual-core Mobile Station Modem (MSM) MSM7500 and MSM7200 3G chipsets. The tech is used in the HTC Mogul and HTC TyTN II Kaiser (both of which were recently launched) and should fall outside the scope fo the ITC trade ban on Qualcomm’s other 3G technologies. There’s definitely more than one way to skin a mobile-tech cat. If you can’t get your 3G chips into the US, just develop some new technology that will make it to Yankee shores. Now that’s what we call innovation. We expect to see a lot more from the renewed partnership between HTC and Qualcomm - bring on the 3G (while we wait for 4G, that is)! • Apple iPhone sales eclipse all other smartphones in July!

Sealed battery ? Closed operating system? No physical keyboard? Slow data / No 3G? Say what? Despite all the iPhone’s negative attributes (and in spite of all the iPhone’s detractors), Apple has just outsold all other smartphone in the month of July. According to a study from iSuppli, the Apple iPhone’s first full month of sales proved to scoop up an incredible 1.8% of US mobile handset sales - dwarfing sales of smartphones from Palm, RIM, Sony Ericsson, and even Nokia. For a mobile phone that doesn’t even have the latest technology (GPS or 3G) we’re seeing rampant sales of the first handset offering from Apple. Says iSuppli, “While iSuppli has not collected historical information on this topic, it’s likely that the speed of the iPhone’s rise to competitive dominance in its segment is unprecedented in the history of the mobile-handset market.” iSuppli’s data was gathered through an online survey of 2 million participants and represents a mostly male, under 35, college graduate demographic. And, a quarter (1/4) of iPhone buyers actually switched from another carrier to AT&T in order to get a chance to buy the iPhone - that’s like moving from the Valley to Santa Monica, CA. so you could be in the more desirable beach neighborhood. It seems that most smartphone buyers in the US are not concerned with any of the iPhone’s downsides - concentrating on the revolutionary interface and “coolness” factor. Surely there are people that wouldn’t touch the iPhone with a 10-ft. pole, but that group seems to now be the minority - a dwindling minority, if iSuppli’s forecast of 4.5 million iPhone sales pans out.
