  • Use your iPhone to make long-distance calls at local wireless rates - RingFree allows VoIP over GSM

Now this is one intriguing method to make long-distance (international) phone calls for the price of local (domestic) wireless rates (not including any VoIP fees - which are incredibly cheap). RingFree basically allows you to call into their VoIP SIP server, pick the VoIP provider you’d like to use, and dial an international phone number - essentially allowing you to use your regular wireless minutes to make long-distance calls (say, to the UK, Finland, or Serbia). The RingFree multi-VoIP service is available for iPhone users, and provides and iPhone-like numeric keypad to preserve that iPhone-feel. Point your iPhone Safari browser to https://rf.com/ and register your iPhone number, some other relevant information, and then verify your PIN. It’s all fairly straightforward and hassle-free. After you register, you are prompted to select your VoIP provider of choice, enter your destination phone number (via that iPhone-esque numeric keypad), and get your international call going for the price of domestic wireless minutes. There’s some JavaScript transferred over the EDGE data network to get things off and running, but it’s a small bit of code (you should have an unlimited data plan anyway). Voice quality is reportedly good, and calls go through without too much delay. There’s no WiFi connection required and since barely any data is transferred, you don’t need a strong EDGE signal. Oh, and Google Talk and MSN Voice is supported too. • Could this be what the iPhone Starbucks quick-order system will look like?

By now it’s a fairly by-gone conclusion that Apple will be announcing their partnership with Starbucks to deliver an iPhone-based online quick-order system. The design-gurus in Cupertino have already filed for a patent application to that effect, and we’re all just waiting on Steve Jobs to drop the espresso-bomb on us next week at Macworld Expo. So, just how would this iPhone-based Starbucks coffee-ordering system work? Well, designer Phil Lu drew up a few concept images to give us an idea. Keep in mind that all this concept work was done before the Apple patent application was made public. The screenshots look pretty slick and we’d be more than happy to use this system to order our Double Venti Soy Decaf Latte. When asked why he used a Semacode for purchase verification, Phil responded: This concept was designed before the Apple patent is widely publicized. Similar to ordering song through the web via iTune account, Semacode works like a digital “receipt,” allowing the user to use their iTunes account for the transaction (which will bypass credit card transaction/identification, and speed up the pick-up process). We should have more news next week. Keep reading for more concept pics of the iPhone Starbucks quickorder system. • Avaya gives iPhone some enterprise prowess - Avaya one-X Mobile coming to iPhone

The iPhone isn’t exactly an enterprise device , that much is truth. But, that doesn’t stop throngs of businesspeople from insisting that their IT department support their new-fangled iPhone. Avaya’s taken heed and has plans to bring their Avaya one-X Mobile platform to the iPhone. Support for the year’s hottest handset is expected to come in Q1 2008, and will essentially turn your iPhone into another endpoint on the corporate network - by “endpoint on the corporate network” we mean that the all calls to the office phone will be routed to the iPhone when you’re out of the office. The Avaya one-X Mobile interface will allow iPhone users to access their visual voicemail, corporate directories, VIP lists, and allow incoming and outgoing voice calls under your office phone-number ID - all through an “enterprise-secure” connection. Check out this flash-based demo to get an idea of how Avaya’s one-X Mobile will work on the iPhone. Now, all we need is Apple-sanctioned ActiveSync and MS Exchange Server support . MacWorldExpo?
