  • Free SMS for everyone via AIM for iPhone

AIM on the iPhone and iPod Touch has a feature that could make the SMS app on the iPhone obsolete. Or not. But it’s still a pretty neat little tweak, nonetheless. By downloading the free AIM client from the iPhone App Store, you’ll be able to send free SMS messages to your “buddies” any time, anywhere [...]
  • AT&T reveals iPhone Text Accessibility Plan for hearing impaired

Filed under: Handsets , Messaging , ATT , GSM , EDGE , Apple , OS X Although AT&T has had a specialized plan for the deaf and hard of hearing for some time now, the iPhone has been unfortunately unable to take advantage. No longer will that be the case, as said carrier has just implemented the Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone, which provides unlimited texting, unlimited data usage, $0.40 per minute pay-per-use voice and Visual Voicemail. Granted, the iPhone TAP does cost $40 ($10 more than the vanilla TAP), but you are getting limitless texts (versus 5,000) and Visual Voicemail thrown in -- not that those inclusions really warrant the extra Hamilton. Nevertheless, those with adequate documentation can get their iPhone on the plan right now, just click the read link for details / instructions. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Apple posts a fix for iPhone 1.1.3 SMS ordering problem

Filed under: Handsets , Apple We'd heard that the iPhone 1.1.3 update was causing major problems with SMS message order, but a new support doc up on Apple's site points to a relatively simple fix: turning on automatic date / time updates. Apparently the problem is caused when the internal clock doesn't match up to the carrier clock -- which seems like it'll be a continuing annoyance for frequent travelers, so hopefully a better solution is in the works. • Bonus features in iPhone v1.1.3 - expanded SMS text message storage limit, better on-screen typing, karaoke mode

Aside from those reports of iPhones going bonkers following an update to the v1.1.3 firmware, it seems that the new firmware brings with it some previously unmentioned features - icing on the cake. The previous firmware limited SMS text message storage to 1,000 messages. The limit wasn’t too shabby, but when you send upwards of 20 SMS text messages per day (which are a joy to send on the iPhone - even better now ), you can find yourself having to free up some space and delete text-message conversations quite often. It was really a shame, since text message conversations are threaded, it was nice to have a running log of past conversations. Well, Apple has boosted the SMS text message storage limit. We’re not sure exactly how many text messages will now be stored on the iPhone, but we’re hoping the new text message-capacity is large enough so that even heavy SMS-users won’t have to worry about their text message inbox too often. And, to make it easier to type out those text messages on your iPhone’s on-screen keyboard, Apple has enhanced the keyboard interface. The keyboard now registers simultaneous typing inputs - which is to say that you can now hold down that “Shift” key whilst hitting another key, more similar to the way a real keyboard works. Gone are the days of hitting “Shift,” and lifting your finger before hitting the next key. Lastly, you can activate Lyric- or Karaoke-mode on the iPhone by tapping on the Album cover as the song is playing. As you may have guessed, Karaoke-mode displays the lyrics of compatible songs right on your iPhone’s screen - great for rockin’ out to that new song, and actually knowing the words. Armed with the correct lyrics, you’re friends will be less annoyed at your attempts at American iDol glory. Thanks for the hook-up Apple. Now, where’s the damn MMS and video recording. Actually, we just like giving you grief over MMS because we can, but we never really...

  • Change your iPhone's SMS text message bubbles to a matte finish - iPhone Matte

We love the threaded SMS text messaging system on the iPhone. But, some of you may be getting a bit tired of the shiny-look and green/gray color scheme of the text-bubbles. Well, this one goes out to you. Joshua Bryant has released his iPhone Matte to change the shiny-finish of the text-bubbles to a “matte” finish. iPhone Matte even gives you the option to change the color-scheme of your chat-bubbles - with 9 flashy colors to choose from. For what it’s worth, the color choices give new life to the iPhone’s chat bubbles, but we’re not fans of the matte finish. • Apple patent reveals data-to-voice translation system for cellphones

Filed under: GSM , Apple Apart from Steve's not-so-subtle hatred of buttons , Apple has traditionally been a fairly accessibility-aware company, and its latest patent application, for the "Multimedia data transfer for a personal communication device," outlines a method by which the visually-impaired can use services like SMS. The system eliminates the need for backend servers and data transfers by having the transmitting device first read the text and then send it over a voice channel to the receiver. The application also details an extension of the system where received voice transmissions are forwarded to a mail server and stored for later retrieval -- kind of like reverse voicemail. As always, Apple's pretty vague about how we might see this patent applied, but that doesn't make trying to read the patent tea leaves any less entertaining .
