  • AT&T reveals iPhone Text Accessibility Plan for hearing impaired

Filed under: Handsets , Messaging , ATT , GSM , EDGE , Apple , OS X Although AT&T has had a specialized plan for the deaf and hard of hearing for some time now, the iPhone has been unfortunately unable to take advantage. No longer will that be the case, as said carrier has just implemented the Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone, which provides unlimited texting, unlimited data usage, $0.40 per minute pay-per-use voice and Visual Voicemail. Granted, the iPhone TAP does cost $40 ($10 more than the vanilla TAP), but you are getting limitless texts (versus 5,000) and Visual Voicemail thrown in -- not that those inclusions really warrant the extra Hamilton. Nevertheless, those with adequate documentation can get their iPhone on the plan right now, just click the read link for details / instructions. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T to raise SMS and MMS messaging rates

Weren’t we just talking about how wireless carriers are gouging customers on SMS text message and MMS picture/video messaging rates? Yea, well, it looks like AT&T’s turning up the heat and raising their messaging rates for the pay-per-use set…again. Customers without messaging bundles will be seeing their SMS text message-costs rise to $0.20 (20 cents) per message, with each MMS picture/video message costing $0.30 (30 cents) each. Come March 30, these new rates will help AT&T gouge the casual SMS and MMS message-user for their hard-earned bucks. Granted, we’re talking pennies here, but it’s about the principle here. So, if you use more than a handful of text or picture messages every month, we’d suggest that you get yourself on a messaging-bundle soon. • AT&T boosting pay-per-use text and MMS rates -- again

Filed under: Messaging , ATT Whoa there, didn't these just go up not long ago ? Indeed they did, but in the fast-paced, money-grubbing world we call home, two price bumps spaced a year apart are sadly par for the course. AT&T has started informing customers that unless they're subscribed to a messaging plan, they'll be paying 5 cents more for both text messages and picture / video messages -- now up to 20 and 30 cents per, respectively. The change takes effect March 30, so we'd recommend you either tell all your peeps to cut it out with the messaging or sign up with a package by then. Follow the break for AT&T's full manifesto. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] AT&T will increase the price on the Messaging (Text/IM & Picture/Video) Pay Per Use (PPU) features for new and existing customers on March 30, 2008. While the price increase impacts the Pay Per Use customers who tend to be light messaging users, our customers who have purchased messaging packages or MEdia Bundles will not be impacted. All of our customers will continue to be provided our best-in-class products, services, and support. Customers will be notified in advance of the price increase. • Cell phone bill on the rise? Check your SMS charges

Filed under: Messaging , ATT , Sprint , T-Mobile , Verizon Wireless If you've been paying attention to mobile carriers' SMS pricing lately (and something tells us you haven't) you'd be surprised to discover a fairly disturbing trend amongst providers: price hikes. Over the past year or so, nearly every major carrier in the US has raised their per-price cost of SMS messages, with Verizon and Sprint jacking up the fee from $0.15 to $0.20 a message, and AT&T and T-Mobile adding another nickel to their $0.10 charge. Of course, this trend of rising prices accompanies a major spike in the use of text messages amongst customers, with some surveys marking a 130-percent jump over SMS use since June 2006 -- and telcos are taking it to the bank. What's most insidious about the inflated costs is the fact that SMS data is particularly low-bandwidth, and analysts say that the price increases aren't related to higher operating costs -- these companies are simply gouging customers for a service which they have embraced. Companies say the hikes are meant to encourage customers to go for more expensive "bundles," though we're confident they won't mention it when your Mom uses more messages than her plan allows and unwittingly pays a few extra bucks on her bill -- that stuff adds up, you know? • AT&T to subscribers: less detail, we promise

Filed under: ATT , Misc So it seems that AT&T has recognized the error of its ways in sending out entire trees' worth of paper for its monthly bills, firing off text messages today to subscribers that read as follows: "We are simplifying your paper bill, removing itemized detail. To view all detail go to att.com/mywireless. Still need full paper bill? Call 611." So yeah, if you actually need 400 pages of gibberish to recall everyone you sent a text to last month, go ahead and dial 'em up. Otherwise, take solace in the fact that your postal carrier won't have to lug that bad boy around anymore. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • AT&T's international texting plan goes live

Filed under: Messaging , ATT While we'd recommend just hoping on Skype to chat it up with your overseas pals whenever possible, we understand the occasional jam where only a text message will do. Apparently, AT&T also sees this opportunity, and is looking to make international texting a bit easier on the wallet by introducing the International Long Distance Text Messaging Package we had received wind of last month. The add-on package will run $9.99 per month and provides 100 messages to send out, meaning that if you fully utilize the offering you'll be looking at about $0.10 a pop. Unfortunately, picture and video messaging are still only available as pay-per-use luxuries, but we're sure an all inclusive option will pop up before too terribly long. • International texting package in the pipe for AT&T

Filed under: Messaging , ATT We've received word that AT&T is prepping a new package that should make texting outside of the US just a little more palatable. Right now, folks pay a stiff $0.20 to get their SMSes off our shores and $0.15 to get them in -- not bad, no, but still a good deal pricier than the domestic stuff. The new plan, scheduled for a June 3 launch, allegedly rocks 100 texts per month for $9.99, basically shaving 50 percent off the cost (for the first hundred, anyway). Still more expensive than a text to your friend next door -- and no, it doesn't include picture or video messaging -- but we'll take what we can get.
