  • What’s a BlackBerry Without a Keyboard?

RIM's recently released Blackberry Storm is a device that tries to outdo Apple's iPhone by including a beefed-up OS, polishing up the interface and marrying it to a really fast 3G network (instead of AT&T's pokey 3G network.) The device even has visual voice mail, and a cut-and-paste feature. And oh by the way, RIM got rid of the the keyboard and got itself a touch screen. Verizon seems to have orchestrated a nice launch and the early reviews give the Storm a thumbs up. If you believe everything reviewers say, then you gotta wonder: Why has RIM only gotten around to making BlackBerrys like the Storm (and the Bold) now? I think it was due to a lack of imagination -- and fear of taking risks. Now that that iPhone has made touch screens cool, RIM is jumping on the bandwagon. Our own James Kendrick has taken an in-depth look at the Storm and has posted his findings on jkOnTheRun, along with a fantastic video that takes you through the pros and cons of the device. He sent in his thoughts for our readers: The Storm is unusual for a Blackberry as it lacks a physical keyboard of any kind. The screen is a large display that uses SurePress technology from RIM that makes it feel like using a physical thumb board when you type on the screen. In our brief experience it works very well and we won't be surprised to see the Storm take off in the consumer space. He seems to like the device a lot (You can find his complete review at jkOnTheRun ). I, however, am not sold on it. While I can live without a keyboard on iPhone, I cannot do the same on a BlackBerry. One of the reasons I like BlackBerry is the physical QWERTY keyboard. The Bold's keyboard was one of the reasons I gave that device a big thumbs up. The keyboard and push email make BlackBerry a device to love because it allows you to plow through copious amount of email when on the go. The reason I carry both an iPhone and a BlackBerry 8800 is because I use the first one for browsing and talking, while the...
  • iPhone 3G overtakes the RAZR as best-selling domestic handset

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , RIM , Apple According to a report from NPD, sales of cellphones have shifted in a manner which should shock and stun even a casual observer. Apparently for the first time in years, Motorola's ubiquitous RAZR has been overtaken in consumer sales... by the iPhone 3G. This is a watershed moment for handset sales in the US, marking not only a shift away from the dominant market leader, but a turn towards more complex, full-featured devices. The news comes hot on the heels of NPD's previous findings , which still placed the RAZR in the top spot -- though with ever-decreasing numbers. In that same report, the iPhone found itself in second place, but it appears that flagging interest in the inescapable dumbphone coupled with the recent iPhone PR blitz have put Apple's moneymaker into the top position. The news is also buoyed by recent reports that Apple has overtaken RIM as the number two smartphone vendor, and a J.D. Power study which found affection for the device waxing in the extreme. Overall, however, handset sales fell 15 percent year-over-year, and LG managed to snag the top brand position, with two models in the top five. Still, if there already wasn't a clear indication of the market moving towards both smartphones and touchscreen devices, this should give everyone a clearer picture of both the public's wants, and the power of Cupertino's ad-men. Full PR after the break. • Apple bumps RIM our of #2 slot for smartphone shipments

The latest numbers released by Canalys indicates that once again Nokia has kept the top sport in regards to smartphone shipments for the third quarter of this year. Of course, that’s probably not a news bulletin considering Nokia’s dominance of the mobile phone market in general. What is big news is the fact that Apple [...]
  • Study: iPhones Twice As Reliable As BlackBerries

The iPhone is twice as reliable as the Blackberry after one year of ownership, a new study by SquareTrade finds. SquareTrade, which sells extra warranties for cell phones and other devices, looked at the failure rates of 15,000 phones covered under its plans. The malfunction rate for iPhones after one year is 5.6 [...]
  • Apple passed RIM in smartphone market in Q3

When Apple announced that it had sold 6.9 million iPhones in its fiscal fourth quarter, Apple CEO Steve Jobs proclaimed that his company had passed Research In Motion in units shipped in the quarter. Research firm Canalys has confirmed that, as Apple became the second biggest player in the smartphone market and took 17.3 percent of the market, compared to RIM's 15.2 percent. Report
  • Analyst confirms Apple slid past RIM to become number two smartphone vendor

Filed under: RIM , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , Apple So apparently Apple knew what it was talking about after all. Research firm Canalys says that Apple stole the rug out from underneath RIM in the third quarter to become the world's number two pusher of smartphones, taking a hearty 17.3 percent market share compared to RIM's 15.2 percent and Windows Mobile's 13.6 percent. For what it's worth, the firm says RIM could very well bounce back in the fourth quarter with the Bold , Storm , and Pearl 8220 all ramping up in time for the holidays, but either way, number one platform Symbian needn't sweat any time soon; Nokia's baby managed to lose 21.5 percent share year over year, but they're still sitting pretty with 46.6 percent. How'd Apple manage to steal so much BlackBerry thunder (pun painfully intended)? Part of the evidence might lie in J.D. Power's just-released 2008 Business Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study, revealing that suits adore their iPhones, like their BlackBerrys just alright, and despise their Palms. Amusing to us was the iPhone's rating of a 5 out of 5 in the Features category -- the only contender to get a perfect score there -- despite the fact that virtually every other smartphone platform continues to outstrip it for raw capability. Usability , though, well... that's arguably another story altogether. • AT&T officially delivers free WiFi to BlackBerry / iPhone users

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , Misc , Apple We thought we'd heard the last of this whole AT&T / Starbucks WiFi deal yesterday , but alas, we were terrifically mistaken. AT&T has come forth today with two fluffy press releases that flesh out the details, and amazingly, there are some inclusions that we weren't made aware of yesterday. For starters, all iPhone / iPhone 3G customers will now have free (and seemingly limitless) access to AT&T WiFi hotspots across the US -- we're talking Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, the whole lot. Additionally, the carrier has welcomed select BlackBerry users -- that's the Bold for now , the Pearl 8120 / 8820 "later this year" -- into the same deal, though the official verbiage mentions that an "unlimited data plan" is required. If you didn't make the cut this time, fret not -- AT&T has plans to invite "more mobile devices" into the fold here shortly. • Microsoft waves dismissive, bloated hand at iPhone sales figures

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , Windows Mobile , Apple , OS X Microsoft's Robbie Bach feigned an uninterested yawn at Apple's 6.9 million iPhones figure in an interview with BusinessWeek the other day. He wasn't particularly insulting of the product, but didn't think the number means too much in the long run. "Apple had a big launch of a new product, and they launched at scale in a lot of new countries with a lot of new [wireless] operators. This quarter, RIM is having its big launch, and at some point we'll have our big launch. We'll have to see where things normalize." While that statement is encouraging for the fact that it semi-implies that Windows Mobile 7 is supposed to be released at "some point," we're not sure we're picking up what Robbie is putting down -- 6.9 million of a single device seems to imply a bit more than "launch buzz." Things devolved quickly when Bach started spouting about how carriers want a balanced ecosystem. That may be true, but consumers are the ones that buy the phones, and if their RAZR buying habits are any indication, "ecosystem" isn't their top priority. • iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Storm and Bold compared on video: awkward...

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , CDMA , Apple , OS X One might think that the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Storm could get along together, but similar to twin brothers who both aspire to graduate Magna Laude from an Ivy league school, these two aren't exactly the most loving of siblings. Oh, and toss in that iPhone 3G -- which played a huge role in helping Apple sell more phones than RIM last quarter -- and you've got yourself a bona fide mess. Check out all three getting shoved up on one another in the name of comparison just after the break. It's a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it. • Apple sells 6.9M iPhones in Q4

Apple, in announcing its fourth quarter earnings, said that it had sold 6.9 million iPhones in the quarter, and was poised to have 200 million downloads from its App Store. The iPhone number is just one of the major headline statistics in what was a monster quarter for the California computer maker. The phone, which is subsidized by AT&T Mobility and runs on its 3G HSPA network, has been a huge seller for the company, and the 6.9 million units sold compares to 1.1 million units in the year-ago period. Apple launched the iPhone 3G in early July. The company saw its net profit for the period ending Sept. 27 surge 26 percent to $1.14 billion. In announcing the news, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company would pass the 200 million mark for the number of applications sold in its App Store, which launched the iPhone 3G. He also added some bluster during a call with investors when he claimed that Apple had sold more devices in the quarter than Research in Motion, the Canadian BlackBerry-maker. RIM has not yet released its numbers for the current quarter. • iPhone sales surpass Blackberrys in fourth quarter figures

When the original iPhone launched, the thought that it might be a threat to RIM’s business conquering Blackberry handset was the stuff of fairy tales. One year and one business friendly hardware refresh later, and it looks like Apple’s mobile might be set to give the Blackberry a run for its money. Apple’s recently announced quarterly [...]
