  • Telus getting BlackBerry Curve, Samsung U740?

Filed under: Handsets With the 8130 and the 8830 already in Telus' BlackBerry lineup, the natural next step for any CDMA carrier to take is to launch the recently-spied CDMA Curve , of course. Indeed, it looks like Telus is stepping up to the plate and doing the right thing here, thanks to a sharp-eyed HowardForums member who captured a shot of Telus' site showing the 8330 on sale for $199.99 CAD (about $203) on a three-year contract. 'Course, like a mirage, the mysterious 8330 vanished into thin air -- its time hasn't come yet -- but we expect it'll be back in the mix in short order now. Separately, we've heard from another tipster that both the Curve and a Samsung U720 can be found in metadata associated with Telus' media player. What's the U720, you ask? We're not sure, but they're calling it the "Flipper" and it looks suspiciously like Verizon's U740, alias "Alias." No word yet on when exactly the Canadian carrier will commit to putting these new pieces up on its site for keeps. [Thanks, Tal and John] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • BlackBerry Curve 8310 finds its way to AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , EDGE We can't say that this one caught us off guard -- you know, considering all the whispers and pictures leading up to today -- but regardless, AT&T is making things official by formally introducing the red (and titanium) BlackBerry Curve 8310 to its network. As you all well know, this piece boasts built-in GPS, a 320 x 240 resolution display, two-megapixel camera, integrated media player, microSD expansion slot, Bluetooth 2.0 and support for A2DP / AVRCP. So, how bad will snatching up a fiery new 8310 (which is on sale now, by the way) hurt your bank account? $199.99 after signing away your cellular soul for two-years and waiting who knows how long for a mail-in rebate to make its way back. • Red, titanium BlackBerry Curve 8310s get pictured for AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , EDGE We've been trying to picture in our heads just what a red Curve would look like ever since we heard AT&T's updated 8310 model would rock the hue , but RIM's all-business image -- an image it's increasingly trying to shake as of late -- has more or less blocked that mental rendering for us. Wonder no more, though: Boy Genius Report has scored a picture of AT&T's two 8310 shades, showing the traditional titanium and red, which will apparently be known as "crimson" at launch. Unlike T-Mobile's offering, this one won't have WiFi, but at least it picks up GPS in the process. Look for both to hit any day now . Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Updated AT&T availability dates!

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Nokia , Palm , Pantech , RIM , Samsung , Sony Ericsson , UTStarcom , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , HSUPA Like pretty much everything else in life, carriers' launch dates tend to slip, sometimes to the extreme (oh, come on, you can't tell us you've never procrastinated to the point where you couldn't make a due date!). To that end, we've gotten an updated look at AT&T's expected drop dates , and it seems like the wait has gotten a little longer for a few of the more anticipated handsets in the pipe. Some devices like the red version of the Nokia 6555 have slipped a couple weeks, while others -- the lowly Samsung A127 comes to mind -- have actually moved up. The Pantech Duo has also been pushed out from October 9 to the 30th, possibly to give the just-launched Tilt a little breathing room in the spotlight. Click on for the full list! • AT&T to pick up BlackBerry Curve 8310 in red?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , EDGE Exclusive colors have always been a hit with carriers and customers alike, but for the suits at RIM, dressing up handsets in countless fashionable shades is still a relatively new concept introduced in earnest by the Pearl. T-Mobile snatched up the 8320 variant of the Curve in a color to call its very own -- pale gold -- to go alongside the old standby, titanium. For AT&T, we're hearing the second color (to go with titanium again, of course) will be red. For a device the size of the Curve, a red shell could be quite a standout -- possibly even a bit too much so for a phone that's destined into more than a few corporate pockets. As a personal email powerhouse, though? Yeah, we can see it. [Thanks, anonymous tipster] Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Updated look at AT&T's upcoming launches

Filed under: HTC , LG , Motorola , Nokia , Others , Pantech , RIM , Sony Ericsson , UTStarcom , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We've just been tipped on a fresh roadmap for AT&T's fall launches, and goodness, there's a little something for everyone in here! Note that these are order dates, subject to change -- not necessarily in-store dates -- so your mileage may vary trying to grab these devices on the dates you see here. First up, LG rolls out the CG180 and CU515 "Chiwoo" on October 2. Nokia adds another color for the 6555 on October 11, red, which we think will suite it quite nicely. Speaking of new colors, Sony Ericsson brings a black version of the W580i on October 9. The Pantech Duo -- a device we suspect many folks are getting fired up over -- should hit on the same day. From Motorola, the Q9 Global becomes orderable just a few days from now, September 25, alongside the Tilt from HTC. UTStarcom outs the AMOI-sourced 5700 on October 9, giving folks a low cost (albeit non-3G) Windows Mobile option. RIM gets busy with the Curve 8310 on October 4, effectively sunsetting the original 8300 by adding GPS into the mix. On the data modem side, Sierra and Option will both be contributing HSUPA devices in October. Let's hear it for speedy uploads! Follow the break for the full roadmap. • RIM's new Pearls and Curves: WiFi or GPS, not both

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , EV-DO , CDMA It seems RIM's going full force with the "you can't have your cake and eat it too" rule with its new batch of devices, even though we're pretty sure we could have our cake and eat it too -- if only RIM would let us. If a slide deck over on Pinstack turns out to be legit, the next-gen Pearl and the 8300 Curve's slightly newer cousins will be available in carriers' choices of WiFi or GPS variants, but for whatever reason, never both. We're guessing RIM has some fancy explanation about battery drain or engineering issues, but whatever -- we can think of plenty of devices that do both with aplomb, so we're not too happy about the whole mess. As the Curves go, the 8310 will do GPS while the 8320 will pack the 802.11b/g action, but the devices' internals are otherwise unchanged from the original. The Pearl 2 meanwhile has a more expansive list of updates from its predecessor, stepping up to a 2 megapixel camera, an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack, and "new firm keypad technology" ( yay !) among other things. In the Pearl's case, network determines the add-on feature: GSM gets WiFI (probably to make up for the agony of EDGE) while CDMA gets GPS. Look for all of these to hit well before the year's out. • Vodafone picks up GPS-equipped BlackBerry Curve 8310

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Just days after we Americans got a taste of BlackBerry with a hint GPS , now those in Germany can look forward to the same delicacy. The BlackBerry Curve 8310 will be picked up by Vodafone and sport built-in "GPS navigation and advanced multimedia functionality." Furthermore, the smartphone will include Vodafone Navigator software, a two-megapixel camera, microSD expansion slot, 320 x 240 resolution display, quad-band GSM support, Bluetooth 2.0, USB connectivity, and a media player to boot. Notably, the first 5,000 individuals to mosey on in and pick one up will reportedly be blessed with a 1GB microSD card gratis, and better yet, it will include the current 100 top chart songs pre-installed as MP3s (hooray!). So head on down to your local Vodafone outlet with €99.90 ($136), and be sure to navigate your return trip through all sorts of back roads.
