  • Apple working on streaming your iTunes library to your iPhone?

    Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Peripherals , Apple Apple's experimented with allowing iTunes to stream over the internet as well as your LAN in the past and quickly removed the feature (probably due to RIAA pressure), so we're not placing too much stock in this, but AppleInsider's unearthed a patent that seems to describe a way to stream music over the 'net to your iPhone / iPod touch. The goal is to prevent you from having to selectively sync content to your device -- instead, you'd sync just the metadata and stream whatever you wanted direct from your machine as though it was all stored locally. There are some obvious problems here -- it wouldn't work if you didn't have service (or over EDGE, really), most home upstream connections aren't that fast, etc., etc., -- but it's certainly interesting, and a welcome addition to local storage if it ever makes the scene.   • Prototype iControlPad proves itself on video

The iPhone gamepad add-on that we heard about just last week is already inching closer to reality, and there's a video to prove it.   • Griffin ships iPod / iPhone-compatible iTrip AutoPilot

    Filed under: Peripherals , Misc , Apple It's been a hot minute since Griffin Technology loosed a new iTrip, but the newest member of the family is one we can't help but high-five. The iTrip AutoPilot not only charges and transmits iPod audio to your FM stereo, but it also does the same with Apple's iPhone. As expected, the device plugs into one's cigarette adapter on one end while sliding into a Dock Connector on the other; the SmartScan technology will do its best to locate the clearest frequency for transmitting on, and it will then display said station so you can dial in with your radio.   • 3G iPhone revealed in third-party case render?

    Filed under: Handsets , Peripherals , Apple Look, we're not saying this means anything, but the above rendering from iPhone case-maker XSKN sure does look like those supposed design changes we've been hearing about . You'll note the larger, more curvy back, space opened up near the earpiece for the rumored front-facing camera, and what appears to be a non-recessed headphone jack. Sure, this could be a ploy to get eyes on their pages, but even if they're citing the specs we've heard , this is still the first case design we've seen for anything other than the original iPhone.   • Kensington unveils Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod

    Filed under: Peripherals , Apple Sure, there are already a handful of options out there for extending the life of your iPhone / iPod battery, but since when have we been ones to gripe about a little competition? Kensington has just introduced a standard and miniature version of its Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod, which unsurprisingly provides juice to your device's internal battery and can be recharged simultaneously. As you could likely guess, the only differences between the two contraptions are the size, price and battery life; the 0.22-pound standard model extends play time to up to 100 hours (music) / 6 hours (talk), while the even tinier mini version livens things up for another 30 hours (music) / 3 hours (talk). The Xylo Touch-Thru (T2) claims to be the first case to put a hard shell atop the iPhone's touch panel which can remain in place as you check your email, respond to a SMS or dial up the local pizza joint . By utilizing Surface Xylo Wave technology, ultrasonic waves are able to permeate through to the display without interference, allowing users to simultaneously keep their precious panel protected 'round the clock while not inhibiting their ability to touch and feel.   • Griffin's ugly-ass ClearBoost iPhone antenna booster hits the scene

    Filed under: Peripherals , Apple Griffin 's antenna-stub sporting ClearBoost case for the iPhone just hit the streets, and opinions are already pouring in. The case involves the antenna, a bumper and a screen protector, and while the resulting combination is not much for loooks, iLounge found it to improve performance in certain situations. Apparently in very low coverage areas the ClearBoost isn't much help, but in wonky two or three bar situations ClearBoost added one or two bars. Sounds like a win to us, but you're going to have to have some serious need of signal to sacrifice iPhone aesthetics this totally.   • locoGPS, now in WiFi flavor

    Filed under: Peripherals , Apple If the thought of a black box jutting out of the bottom of your iPhone is too much to bear, rest easy, because it looks like a dock module isn't going to be your only option. The same company that brought us the original locoGPS is back at it again, this time with a wireless module that looks fit 'n trim enough to stow away neatly on a key ring. Wireless GPS modules are a dime a dozen these days, but what makes the so-called locoGPS Mobile Navigation Server so special is that it serves piping hot coordinates up via WiFI, not the usual Bluetooth, which is just fantastic considering that the iPhone's Bluetooth stack doesn't much like to talk to anything other than headsets. It even stores maps locally via an integrated microSD slot, which means you don't have to delete those Wiggles albums off the iPhone's storage after all. If all goes according to plan, we'll see the wireless locoGPS launch alongside its decidedly more wired sibling in June for €120 (about $183), nav software included.   • NewerTech unleashes iPhone accessory storm

    Filed under: Peripherals , Apple Well, if you're gonna launch a new product line, why not fill it up, right? NewerTech will debut six lovely products for iPhone at Macworld on the 15th January, though all save the dock are available immediately. The product list features the speaker dock with handsfree mic that includes a couple 2-watt speakers and an "improved" microphone that doubles as charger when your iPhone is in the dock, throw in a couple call handling buttons and all that can be your for a mere $35. Next up is the $20 handsfree mic and earbud which features a 39 inch cable and shirt clip, a $15 mic extender is also on the table featuring a 27 inch cable to give you iPhone handsfree fun with your own earbuds, and of course an $8 headphone adapter to overcome the iPhone's crazy recessed jack. NewerTech rounds out its iPhone collection with a $20 set of buds with passive noise reduction -- said to reduce noise by 42 decibels -- and a $13 car charger for those on the go.   • Control your entire house with your iPhone or iPod Touch

    Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Peripherals , Software , Misc , Apple , OS X The dream of an automated house has never been more achievable, and thanks to DIY software like Cinemar's Mainlobby, just about anyone can roll their own at a reasonable price. Of course, the more you can control with your home automation system the better. Now, in addition to being able to control lighting, security, home theater gear, thermostats, whole house audio and manage all your movies from a wall mounted touch screen, Mainlobby owners will soon be able to use their iPod Touch or iPhone as a remote. The key to making this work is Mainlobby's built in web server and Safari's extensive AJAX support -- sorry Windows Mobile fans. Unfortunately, this is only a first look, but these examples will be included in future versions of MLServer. And considering the lead developer on the project plans to use it as his " primary handheld controller," it should mean lots of future development. More pictures after the jump.
