  • Alltel launches EC360, first Huawei data card in North America

Filed under: Peripherals , Others , Alltel , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Bring on the Chinese hardware! Hot on the heels of ZTE's victory making North American inroads on Telus with its D90 flip phone, Huawei's next, launching its EC360 data card on Alltel. To be fair, the EC360 is a little more boring than the Fastap -equipped D90 -- it's just an EV-DO PC Card -- though the 2.4Mbps of downstream speed Alltel's promising is music to our ears. Grab it now for a penny shy of $190, free after rebates and activation. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Telus gets a pair of Sierra Wireless modems

Filed under: Peripherals , Others , Telus Mobility , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA All that newly-launched EV-DO rev. A happiness in southern Ontario, Montreal, and Winnepeg doesn't do a heck of a lot of good without hardware to match, so Canada's Telus has teamed up with Sierra Wireless to deliver a pair of modems that take full advantage of the speed. The 595U is a USB modem that already sees duty on Sprint, offering up support of PCs and Macs alike with average download speeds ranging from 450 to 800 kbps and uploads commanding 300 to 400 kbps. Look for it soon for $99.99 CAD (about $94) on a three-year agreement or $349.99 (about $331) commitment-free. The other unit, the MP 595 GPS, is intended for public safety, transportation, and field service applications with military-spec ruggedness, integrated serial, USB, and Ethernet connections, and a GPS receiver for vehicle tracking. Needless to say, it won't be available from your friendly local Telus outlet, but interested parties should be able to call the carrier directly to get hooked up. • Sierra Wireless AirCard 597E ExpressCard to hit Sprint

Filed under: Peripherals , Others , Sprint-Nextel , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Although Sierra Wireless launched its AirCard 597E EV-DO Rev. A ExpressCard last summer, the device is finally making the leap to Sprint-Nextel's Mobile Broadband Network. Aside from the aesthetics, just a few alterations have been made under the hood, but we know you're most interested in how it allows Sprint customers to hop on the 3G highway with their ExpressCard -equipped lappie (or desktop ). Of note, this rendition does manage to add assisted GPS (A-GPS) capabilities which "plots your current location on a map and then searches for nearby points of interest," a "high-performance (albeit beefy) integrated antenna to improve signal capture and data speed," and the new 65-nanometer MSM6800A chipset from QUALCOMM. Reportedly, Sprint will be demonstrating the card at this week's Interop expo in Las Vegas, and while pricing details were left out for the moment, the card should slip into retail channels next month. • Helio Hybrid, RIP: 2006 - 2007

Filed under: Peripherals , Helio , 1xRTT , EV-DO , MVNOs , CDMA Helio has officially cut down its Hybrid EV-DO / WiFi data card down in its prime. Actually, we're not sure if the Hybrid was cut down before its prime, in its prime, or past its prime -- but any way you slice it, it's toast. The move is going down pretty quickly, too; no new Hybrids are being sold, and existing customers will be switched off as of May 8 (though they're "welcome" to keep the deactivated card, according to the announcement). Folks who also have a voice line activated with Helio will be given a month of free service for their troubles, but we imagine that's little consolation to the poor laptops mercilessly stripped of hotspot and EV-DO access in the discontinuation's aftermath. Was it Helio's stingy 160MB limit that ultimately lead to the Hybrid's demise? We may never know -- but given Helio's cozy relationship with Earthlink and Boingo, we'd be pretty surprised if the MVNO were out of the dedicated data business for good. • New rugged 3G modems from Sierra Wireless

Filed under: Peripherals , Others , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA If you're one of those who needs a vehicle-mounted wireless modem for street use -- or you just like the novelty of a roving hotspot -- you may want to take a peek at some new ruggedized modems from Sierra Wireless . The wireless data modem company is releasing a few models in its "MP" series of product meant for industrial use and abuse (like in a delivery vehicle or ambulance, not necessarily the back seat of your Roller). The newer MP 595 GPS model will give you EV-DO Rev. A speeds if you're into CDMA , while the MP 875 will hook you up on that HSDPA / UMTS network with GPRS / EDGE fallback when necessary (and we hope that's never).
