  • Palm's Treo Pro gets official

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile Well you can't say you didn't see this one coming -- between the leaked shots , more leaked shots , and those -- yes -- leaked press materials , this was only a matter of time. That's right: Palm has gone and gotten all official with its latest and greatest smartphone, the now-familiar Treo Pro. The new Windows Mobile device is being sold unlocked (!), and features an HSDPA cell radio (tri-band UMTS, quad-band GSM), GPS, 802.11b/g, a 320 x 320 touchscreen display, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, a 2-megapixel camera, support for microSDHC cards up to 32GB... and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack! No word on price or actual street date, but we can't imagine that's too far off. Hit the read link and take a tour of the new device, or watch the totally radical -- and long, and detailed -- video after the break. • The Treo Pro makes its video debut, inches towards launch

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile Now that the Treo Pro 's been uncovered, the sleek black handset just can't stay out of the spotlight -- it's popped up today in several more high-res shots, a quick hands-on video, and even what looks like official press photography. Specs are still up in the air -- we're hearing there's a 400MHz processor and 128MB of RAM behind that 320 x 320 screen and original Xbox-looking exterior, but we won't know for sure until this thing gets official, which we're guessing will happen within the week. • Palm's Treo 850 is really the Treo Pro?

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile Would you look at this. A very official looking page -- at a Palm.com domain, no less -- has unveiled the previously rumored Treo 850 as the Treo Pro. We're still digging the new look, though the keyboard does look suspiciously small in these shots. At a cursory glance we've got WiFi, a camera and a 3.5mm stereo jack. A couple more pics after the break. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Continue reading Palm's Treo 850 is really the Treo Pro? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Matias Duarte, designer behind Sidekick and Helio, now developing Palm's next-gen UI

Filed under: Software , Palm So we heard from a very reliable source that mobile user interface guru Matias Duarte -- who you may know as the man behind the Sidekick and Helio UI / user experiences -- actually left Helio late last year to join up with Palm. Although no announcement was made, we hear he and his gang of designers jumped ship (well before Helio completely flooded ) to take on the monumental task of designing the UI for Palm's next-gen mobile OS (aka " Palm OS 2.0 or II "). His resume online now lists him as "Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience" doing "Something new..." since September 2007; we got in touch with Palm, who confirmed that he's now under the company's employ. Of course, expectations should be pretty high -- Palm's only been promising this supposedly game-changing OS since around 2004, and the company's reputation and pedigree is (or at least it used to be) in groundbreaking mobile UI design. But this news also kind of makes us wonder: if they didn't have a killer UI and user experience team already in place and long-since working their asses off by late 2007, exactly how far along are they on this thing, anyway? • Palm launches unlocked Centro, gets Google Maps "My Location"

Filed under: Handsets , Software , Palm , ATT , Sprint , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE We've seen the Centro in its Sprint , AT&T , and Verizon (to name a few) iterations, but global roamers and free agents of all sorts will be delighted to know that Palm's increasingly popular little smartphone is now available in a delicious unlocked GSM flavor. The device sports all the same specs as AT&T's model, but clocks in with a $299 price tag and plain gray numberpad instead of the telco version's shocking lime green variation . Alongside the carrier-free phone, Centros will also be nabbing a version of Google Maps with its " My Location " feature (long absent from GMaps on Palm phones) . Current AT&T and Verizon customers as well as new unlocked owners will be able to download the app tomorrow, with a software update for Sprint later this Summer. Finally, you'll all know where you are. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Palm Centro heads to Verizon, in stores tomorrow for $99

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Verizon Wireless , Palm OS , EV-DO , CDMA Come on, T-Mobile, all we need is you to get on board now and that'll make a perfect Yahtzee! for Palm with its surprise hit, the Centro . Thanks to Verizon's expected announcement today, the top three US carriers now carry the diminutive Garnet device, which Palm actually says is "off to the strongest start of any smartphone in Palm's history" -- quite a statement, considering the Treo line's rich tradition. After the full, delicious menu of rebates and discounts have been applied, Verizon's version will run the same $99 on contract that the boys and girls on Sprint and AT&T pay, and we can look for it to be available through all retail channels starting tomorrow. • Palm Treo 850 spy shots leak out

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile It's finally, really happened. The Boy Genius has gotten his hands on pictures of a brand-spanking-new Palm device -- a heretofore unknown model called the Treo 850. As you can see in the above photo, this is a whole new look for the ailing smartphone maker, though it certainly bears a resemblance to the Centro and Treo 500 . Apparently the Windows Mobile device will sport a 400MHz CPU and a 100MB of RAM, though other details are sketchy at the moment. Honestly, not a bad turn for Palm at all -- now if you can just whip up that new OS and some new touchscreen phones and... Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Palm Treo 800w caught with its keys showing

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA This little bundle of plain-vanilla familiarity is seemingly the first live picture of Palm's upcoming Treo 800w for CDMA networks, known internally as the Zeppelin -- you know, the obsolete airships that had a tendency to spontaneously combust. Specs on this one are starting to shore up, with Windows Mobile 6.1, EV-DO Rev. A, GPS, a 320 x 320 touchscreen (still novel by classic WinMo standards) and a typical Treo look and feel that doesn't diverge terribly much from Palm's tried, true, and well-worn formula. Sprint's looking solid to pick it up come late July , but with those HTCs around the corner , just how much love at the register is this thing gonna get? • Palm Centro now official on AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , ATT , Palm OS , GSM , EDGE Wow, sure enough, those green buttons are straight up legit -- who'd have thought? The long-rumored GSM cut of the Palm Centro is now officially available on AT&T in the wake of Sprint's expiring exclusivity, giving a whole new world of customers access to the freakishly small (yet strangely adorable) Garnet handset. Unlike Sprint's version , the GSM Centro tops out with EDGE data for a moderately less snappy browsing experience; otherwise, though, your $99 on contract is going to buy you a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth 1.2, support for AT&T's push-to-talk service, and a full (albeit miniaturized) QWERTY keypad. So who's liking this more than the white / gray scheme we'd seen before? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Palm, i-mate, others moving manufacturing contracts back to HTC?

Filed under: HTC , Others , Palm We thought that HTC's bold venture into the direct-to-consumer space pretty much spelled doom for its once-burgeoning ODM business, but apparently not. We don't know if these guys are just exceptionally good at what they do, exceptionally cheap, exceptionally convincing, or some combination of the above, because a report out of Taiwan's Commercial Times claims that Palm, i-mate, and MWG -- all companies who've moved their manufacturing contracts solidly away from HTC in recent years -- have come back into the fold, ultimately bumping HTC's contracting business to account for more than 10 percent of its total business in the first quarter. We're skeptical that these three brands (all of whom compete with HTC at retail) would suddenly decide to throw up the white flag at roughly the same time, but considering the kinds of things that happen when other ODMs come into the picture, a little HTC TLC could be just what the doctor ordered. • Palm "Drucker" in the mix, better only than "Zeppelin" among Palm codenames

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS The Treo 680 and 750 are getting a little long in the tooth, are they not? The 680 has a spiritual successor in the Centro -- the 750, though, not so much (come on, the 500v does not count). That might just be where this "Drucker" comes into play, a phone listed on Vodafone's 2008 roadmap that alleges Windows Mobile 6.1 , a 320 x 320 (!) display, 2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and triband 3.6Mbps HSDPA when it comes down the pike this July. In fact, we can pretty much guarantee it'll be replacing the 750v, seeing how it says so right on the slide. Sadly we don't have any visuals on this one (something tells us this ominous gray box isn't the actual phone), but it looks like Voda's targeting a price of £270 (about $534) and we'd be pretty shocked if we didn't see an AT&T launch in roughly the same time frame. • Palm finally posts Windows Mobile 6 for AT&T's Treo 750

Filed under: Software , Palm , ATT , Windows Mobile Some ten months after we first saw Treo 750s running Windows Mobile 6, AT&T and Palm have finally dropped an official upgrade today for the carrier's branded units . Turns out that Windows Mobile 6 is just the start with this little gem of an update, though -- you'll also get HSDPA support (yeah, that's right, you've been rocking plain ol' UMTS up until now), access to AT&T Cellular Video, functional Voice Command while using a Bluetooth headset, device charging via USB, and the list goes on. Head on over to Palm's site to kick off the download, and naturally, be sure to let us know how it goes. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
