  • O2 picks up Windows Mobile powered Palm Treo 500

While it might look familiar to fans of the Palm Centro, the newest Palm handset to hit O2's UK network isn't your fluffy, consumer-oriented device. The Palm Treo 500 goes back to Palm's roots in enterprise devices and brings Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard along to hammer home its business prowess. Vodafone previously had an exclusive on [...]
  • The Palm Treo 500, now SIM free

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile , GSM , UMTS We're not confident that many folks were waiting with bated breath for this to go down, but sure enough, that rumored unlocked Treo 500 we'd told you about is now a reality. Features mirror Vodafone's original -- 256MB of storage, 2 megapixel camera, UMTS, Windows Mobile 6 Standard -- the only difference is that the Vodafone logo is now stone-cold gone from the phone's face, replaced with a more generic Treo logo. Grab it now for £269 (about $528) -- but beware if you're stateside, there's no 850MHz support for GSM and the 3G data resides only on the 2100MHz band. • Unlocked Treo 500 around the corner for Europe

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We suspect it might have some trouble doing battle against the best that other manufacturers have to offer in the Windows Mobile space, but that apparently won't stop Palm from soon offering a carrier unlocked version of its Treo 500 handset in Europe. The move should come shortly following the expiration of Vodafone's period of exclusivity , with availability as soon as next month according to The Register. Seeing how no official announcement has been made, there isn't any pricing information -- but our question is, at what price point would it have to slot to be competitive against, say, an i620 ? • Palm Treo 500v with TPP UI overlay on Windows Mobile

What? Doesn’t the Palm Treo 500v use Windows Mobile as its operating system? What’s with this TPP user interface? Yes, Palm thankfully endowed the Treo 500v with Windows Mobile, but Vodafone has overlayed the traditional WinMo menu structure with a new UI, dubbed TPP. The new menu structure provides faster and easier access to applications through the “Start Menu.” Vodafone’s TPP UI spices up the Windows Mobile OS with new icons and graphics - you get a fresh new look with all the benefits of Windows Mobile compatibility. We like the looks of the new TPP UI. Now, we just have to get our hands on one of these Palm Treo 500v’s with the TPP UI. Check out the vid below to see how it works. • Treo 500v sports a revamped Windows Mobile interface

Filed under: Handsets , Software , Palm , Vodafone , Windows Mobile For all of you fervent Treo fans chomping at the bit to get your hands on the 500v , here's an interesting piece of information which may stir "things" deep inside your mind and body. Apparently, the Windows Mobile-equipped smartphones will be touting a UI that's a pretty big step away from Microsoft's staid and standard operations. According to a slow, yet detailed video we've seen, the new interface will be pulled together using a completely revamped "start menu," (similar to the UI which Samsung is employing on its SGH-i620 ) which gives you much faster access to applications and settings, and has a completely new look. Menus and application icons also appear to be a departure from what we've seen in other WM devices, giving the interface a wholly unique aspect. Check the video after the break and see for yourself. • Palm teases us with Palm Centro - don't you wish there were more of you?

Palm’s newest smartphone offering is also their smallest - of course we’re talking about the Palm Centro. The smartphone maker has taken the wraps off its Palm Centro teaser site , with the tag-line “Do you wish there were more of you?” It looks like Palm is banking on the entry-level demographic that’s looking to boost their productivity as if there were indeed more than one of them. The teaser site shows the Palm Centro clad in Candy Apple Red. The Centro will be toting features like a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD card, instant messaging support, and an updated Palm OS (remember, this is an entry-level device, and as such will get nothing more than an entry-level OS). The Palm Centro takes design cues from the recently released Palm Treo 500v , but sports a narrower profile and smaller QWERTY keyboard. Look for Palm to drop the Palm Centro on October 14 for a buck shy of $100 (contract and rebate required, of course). It’s just too bad Palm doesn’t move on from their antiquated Palm OS - which is, by itself, a deal killer for us (update be damned). Come on Palm, let’s just kill Palm OS and go with Windows Mobile, or at least get your new Linux-based OS out of the R&D labs AFAP (as fast as possible). • Palm Treo 500v hits FCC via Asus

Filed under: Handsets , ASUS , Palm , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE Historically, Palm's had manufacturing relationships with HTC, Foxconn, and Inventec for its Treo line, but it seems they've turned to Asus for the Treo 500 series. How do we know? The FCC tells us so via the device's filing from one ASUSTek Computer Inc. of Taipei, Taiwan. We can understand shying away from HTC -- maintaining a meaningful business relationship with a company that's whipping your butt competitively can be awkward at best -- but we can't help but wonder what led Palm to turn to an entirely fresh ODM relationship this time around. Was it looking to inject some fresh insight for the 500's creation, or did the order simply go to the lowest bidder? Of course, none of this changes the fact that the handset's me-too design and pedestrian feature set arguably leaves it at a competitive disadvantage before it's even released, but at least we can toss a little sliver of that blame Asus' way this time around.
