  • China Mobile to offer subsidization to promote TD-SCDMA

China Mobile Communications, viewing that sales of TD-SCDMA (China-developed 3G standard) handsets have fallen short of expectations, has decided to subsidize purchases of such handsets in an attempt to improve the expected sales opportunities prior to and during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, according to industry sources in Taiwan. China Mobile launched TD-SCDMA trial operations in early April 2008 and attracted 52,000 TD-SCDMA subscribers as of July 1, the sources cited China Mobile's statistics as saying. However, only 8,000 were substantial subscribers whereas the remaining majority were trial users provided by China Mobile with SIM (subscriber identity module) cards, TD-SCDMA handsets and subsidies for communication charges, the sources pointed out. The 8,000 subscribers had purchased only 4,000 TD-SCDMA handsets in total, the sources indicated. For its sales promotion, China Mobile will thus subsidize purchases of TD-SCDMA handsets by 1,000-1,500 yuan (US$146-219) per handset, approximately 60% of the purchase prices, the sources indicated. In addition, China Mobile will absorb charges on TD-SCDMA subscribers' use of certain communication services during the Olympic Games, the sources noted. Following the first procurement of TD-SCDMA handsets at 60,000 units, China Mobile recently finished a second procurement of 200,000 handsets and may additionally order 40,000 TD-SCDMA plus CMMB (China mobile multimedia broadcasting) – the China-developed mobile TV standard – dual-mode handsets, the sources pointed out. China-based makers/vendors, including ZTE, Postcom, Amoi and Hisense, together landed orders for 170,000 handsets and international vendors including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Motorola accounted for the remaining 30,000 units, the sources indicated. Taiwan-based Dopod offered its S700 to win a small order for 3,000 handsets, the sources noted. In comparison with the situation that CDMA2000 1x EV-D attracted four million subscribers in its operation for the initial year and WCDMA reached three million subscribers also in the first year, Taiwan-based handset makers are dubious of the prospect of TS-SCDMA, the sources pointed out. source

Vibo completed raising additional paid-in capital of NT$5.0 billion from domestic investors in late June 2008, with two existing major shareholders Compal Electronics and Kinpo Electronics equally sharing the amount, the sources indicated. Vibo plans to further add NT$4.0 billion to its paid-in capital by the end of this year through attracting foreign investors, and has been negotiating with a few targets, including KTF, the sources pointed out. source
  • Zyxel expected to land WiMAX CPE orders from Pakistan Mobilink

Zyxel Communications is likely to land orders for WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) products from Pakistan service operator Mobilink at the ongoing CommunicAsia 2008 expo in Singapore, according to industrial sources participating in the event. The chance is high for Zyxel to secure the orders from Mobilink because Zyxel's WiMAX CPE products have passed the interoperability tests with WiMAX base stations coming from Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, Samsung Electronics and Nortel Networks, the sources indicated. If the orders are finalized, Zyxel is expected to begin shipping WiMAX CPE products to Mobilink in the fourth quarter of this year with shipment volumes likely to reach 30,000-50,000 units, the sources noted. In addition to WiMAX products, Zyxel is also exhibiting its VoIP and WLAN solutions as well as central office equipment at CommunicAsia, according to company sources. • 3G Spectrum Refarming Needed to Manage the Costs of Customer Expectations

In recent years WCDMA subscriptions have grown apace: from 18 million at the end of 2004 to 170 million at the end of 2007. ABI Research forecasts that figure to rise to 740 million by the end of 2013. “WCDMA is on its way towards proven success,” says Jake Saunders, ABI Research vice president, “but there are still challenges and hurdles to overcome. In particular, operators find that expanding WCDMA coverage in the 2100 MHz band into low-density urban and rural areas is very costly in the current competitive environment.” Spectrum refarming poses challenges for operators and regulators: Existing GSM 900 MHz infrastructure can introduce interference into UMTS 900 MHz networks, so guard band and transitional zones may be needed; Operators may need to carefully manage voice and data traffic loads between the 900 and 2100 MHz bands to ensure there are no dropped connections resulting in loss of revenue; Not all operators have 900 MHz spectrum; therefore refarming of GSM spectrum bands that are coming to the end of their license terms is needed to ensure that they are allocated to everyone fairly. Some of the benefits of spectrum refarming are: Radio wave propagation loss is less, so fewer base stations are required; Improved in-building penetration: over 70% of phone calls are now made indoors; Greater likelihood of rural coverage. Rural communities do not want to be separated by the “3G Divide.” National and regional regulators and standards bodies are acting to modify mobile phone service legislation to allow the deployment of WCDMA access in the 900 MHz band. WCDMA has achieved a reasonable foothold in most markets, but the economics of deployment need to be addressed. Competition and lower than expected returns on investment are decelerating the rate of additional coverage. “Operators are trying to evolve their services to meet the needs of their customers, both corporate and consumer,” adds senior analyst Nadine Manjaro. “Market conditions, and the nature and range of services that operators thought they would be offering to their 3G customers, have changed as well. Deploying WCDMA in the 900 MHz band helps operators to be more versatile.”
