  • Garmin-Asustek ties remain steady despite Nuvifone delay

The current cooperation between Garmin and Asustek Computer remains steady despite Garmin's announcement that the launch of its Nuvifone handset, manufactured by Asustek, has been delayed. The two companies are now sticking to a revised schedule which will see the Nuvifone begin to roll out early next year, according to sources from Taiwan's handset industry. According to Garmin, the launch of its Nuvifone handset has been postponed to the first half of 2009 due to specification changes requested by its carrier clients. However, some market sources in Taiwan have claimed that the delay was caused by Asustek's lack of experience in the development of touch panel handsets. Market rumors also speculated that Garmin is likely to seek alternative production partners in the future due to the slower-than-expected R&D progress at Asustek. The sources argued that the delayed launch of the Nuvifone will affect sales of the 3.5G GPS handset in the future since Apple has already launched its GPS-enabled 3G iPhone and High Tech Computer (HTC) may start marketing the HTC Touch Diamond in North America soon.
  • Garmin outsources Nuvifone to Asustek, say sources

Asustek Computer will be the manufacturer of Garmin International's first handset series, the Nuvifone, which is expected to hit the market in the US in the fourth quarter, according to industry sources. Roger Jollis, Garmin's director of OEM and mobile marketing, said Garmin had placed strong emphasis on its own vertical integration, and had never outsourced its products. But as handsets involve a lot of validation work and RF technology expertise, Garmin started developing the Nuvifone in collaboration with a Taiwan maker, which will also be the manufacturer of the handsets, he said, adding it is the first time that Garmin has outsourced its products. Jollis declined to identify the manufacturing partner. But industry sources pointed out Asustek has been working with Garmin for two years on the project, with the Taiwan-based maker chiefly contributing its know-how in RF technologies. Although Asustek has already spun off its contracting manufacturing arms, it remains in charge of the partnership with Garmin for Nuvifone, the sources said. Jollis said Nuvifone will not be Garmin's only handset, as the company has already worked out its product roadmap up to 2010. • Asustek and Gigabyte Communications to switch to Qualcomm 3.5G single-chip solution

Two more Taiwan handset vendors – Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Communications – have decided to adopt Qualcomm's 3.5G handset platform, the MSM7201, for the production of smartphones, according to sources from Taiwan's handset industry. High Tech Computer (HTC) and LG Electronics are currently the two major clients of Qualcomm's MSM7201 single-chip handset solution, with HTC already demonstrating the benefits of the chipset in its HTC Touch and HTC Touch Diamond lineups, the sources noted. Asustek and Gigabyte apparently aim to follow the steps of HTC in order to strengthen their competitiveness in the smartphone segment, observed the sources. Asustek began the production of smartphones with chipset solutions of Marvell Technology and then switched to Ericsson's EMP platform, said the sources, noting that Asustek is expected to launch Qualcomm-based smartphones by the end of this year. Gigabyte currently uses Qualcomm's MSM6280 handset chips paired with Marvell's handset CPU for its production of 3G/3.5G handsets. The company plans to also start using the MSM7201 single-chip solution by year-end 2008, indicated the sources. source
