  • AT&T lands exclusive Olympics channel for Mobile TV

Filed under: Multimedia , ATT We wouldn't say they're necessarily crying foul, but Verizon is quick to point out that AT&T used its clout as an Olympic sponsor to secure an exclusive on an Olympic coverage channel for its MediaFLO -based mobile TV network. It's a big deal for Verizon simply because it and AT&T are the only two US carriers to offer such a feature at this point -- but there's probably no use crying over spilled milk, and sure enough, Verizon's busy setting up a video series on its VCAST content deck that'll offer highlights of the Olympic action out of Beijing. AT&T, meanwhile, picks up an exclusive through NBC Olympics 2Go -- so we hope you Vu and Access owners are medley swimming fans. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

  • Jobs: App Store launching with 500 iPhone applications, 25% free

Filed under: Multimedia , Apple var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Jobs_App_Store_launching_with_500_iPhone_apps_25_free'; Steve Jobs told USA Today that the Apple App Store will launch with "more than 500" applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less. "This is the biggest launch of my career," said Jobs. Analyst Tim Bajarin at Creative Strategies said, "When IBM introduced the PC, it was good, but it didn't take off until people started discovering the software." It's these apps then, he adds, that will "dramatically differentiates the iPhone" from Treos and BlackBerrys. Indeed, while consumers are focused on the launch of the iPhone 3G device, it's the App Store which has analysts in such a tizzy. Update : The New York Times reports that 1/3 of all first-wave applications will be games. We also corrected the Bajarin misquote above. • Warner Music joins Nokia's Comes With Music download program

Filed under: Multimedia The latest label following BMG to join Nokia's Comes With Music service bandwagon is none other than Warner Music Group. The third-largest label joins the powerful cadre of labels on the service, which as of this posting lacks only EMI for a full major label lineup. As a reminder, the service allows you to download music for 12 months and then keep it as long as you own the device or transfer to a PC. Now, of course, we just need to wait for the devices to roll out. [Via Yahoo News ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Rhapsody ditches (some) DRM, selling MP3s with Verizon and Yahoo

Filed under: Multimedia , Verizon Wireless Rhapsody, the digital love-child of Real Networks and MTV, is best known for its DRM'd subscription music service. As such, the globe's population of sheep-white-earbudded, sidewalk zombies have been completely off limits to its charms. Until today. While its DRM'd subscription deals remain in place, Rhapsody is now offering unprotected MP3 downloads via its Rhapsody MP3 store and via partners including Verizon's VCAST over-the-air service and Yahoo. We're talking 5 million DRM-free tracks (generally priced at $0.99 per song, $9.99 per album) from Indies and the four majors. Uniquely, all tracks can be previewed in full before downloading. Rhapsody VP, Neil Smith said, "We're no longer competing with the iPod, we're embracing it." Perhaps, but Rhapsody's planned $50 million marketing assault on iTunes with the help of MTV's TV networks doesn't exactly make them best of friends. We're not DRM-free across the industry yet (in fact, far from it ), but things are certainly moving in that direction. Update : Signup now with the Rhapsody MP3 store and get a $10 credit which can be applied to your first album. [Via Reuters ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • BlackBerry Media Sync for iTunes makes all-too-brief appearance

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , RIM We've known for a while that support for iTunes synchronization (songs, artwork, playlists, the whole nine yards) would be coming to the BlackBerry platform, and very briefly last week, RIM unleashed that capability on the world. It's unclear why the software was pulled -- maybe it just wanted to release the software to more fanfare, maybe it was buggier than a standing pool of swamp water -- but either way, BlackBerry users desperate to get their sync on should still be able to nab the goods from a number of mirrors hosted by vigilant (and quick-thinking) users around the world while we wait for RIM to decide when to introduce it again. • iPhone roundup: iTunes remote, Apple ready for real software in the App Store

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , Apple , OS X Who would've thought that rumored iControl app would not only turn out to be real, but survive the inevitable internal politics, delays, and feature cutbacks to make it all the way through to a summer release? Sure enough, iTunes 7.7 has been pushed out to developers in the past several hours, and the installer encourages iPhone and iPod touch owners to "use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home -- a free download from the App Store." No further details are given -- and it's not clear whether the "iControl" name seen earlier has been scrapped altogether -- but we can guess that it'll use WiFi to hook up with your mainframe, which really makes the idea of an AirPort Express appealing all over again. On another note, Apple has released Beta 8 of the iPhone SDK and is using the occasion to kick off acceptances of applications to the real, live App Store in preparation for its July 11 launch. It appears that Beta 8 is actually required to complete the process, so don't go jumping the gun now -- goodness knows the rest of the iPhone-toting world doesn't want your half-baked apps in a couple weeks, you shady developer, you. • Dashwire 2.0 launches, mobile finally meets web

Filed under: Handsets , Messaging , Multimedia , Software , Windows Mobile Digital content sharing from mobile to desktop is all the rage at every show we've been to in the last year, and frankly, we'd grown a bit tired of it. We had a chance to hook up with the gents from Dashwire in recent times and the Dashwire push and pull solution fairly blew our socks off. Of course, this has been around for a little while now, but it seems baby's all grown up and Dashwire 2.0 is set for release today. How much does all this cost and is it worth playing with? It's completely free and follow on to read more -- but by way of a hint, we're still cheering. • Danger Sidekick LX does video, quality suffers

Filed under: Multimedia , Danger Well, we heard it was on the way , and it's here. Danger's Sidekick LX recording live action video. Unfortunately, the results are far from exhilarating; truthfully, they're downright embarrassing. The first preview we've seen shows a stamp-sized (read: 176 x 144 pixels) video with less-than-stellar quality, but hey, it's a Sidekick LX recording video. So, still eager to see this rolled out en masse? (Wait 'til you check the sample in the read link before answering that.) [Thanks, Oscar] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola patent application reveals cellphone / HMD combo craziness

Filed under: Multimedia , Motorola , Misc It looks like Motorola isn't about to let Apple have the goofy, non-existent product spotlight to itself, with a recent patent application of its revealing some plans of its own for a head-mounted display. As you can see above, however, this one is no ordinary HMD, with it also able to be folded up into an apparently over-sized cellphone for times when you want to look slightly less conspicuous. Of course, the chances of such a product actually making it off the drawing board are pretty slim (thankfully), and no doubt even less likely given the recent cuts to Motorola's research division.
