  • Broadcom packs Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and FM transceiver on 65nm combo chip

Filed under: Multimedia , Misc You can just tell from the wording in Broadcom's latest press release that it's still beaming from the late September court ruling involving it and Qualcomm, as we've never seen any one company so excited about a piece of silicon. The BCM2049 combo chip is built on 65-nanometer technology and combines Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and an FM transceiver in one convenient place. Obviously, the chip is being aimed at up and coming music phones, and it also features SmartAudio voice processing, Bluetooth audio streaming and an FM transmit function that will surely be next to worthless in mid- to large-size cities. Whoever made it onto Broadcom's early access list can get samples now, but you'll have to bypass the bouncer in order to get pricing. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola's S9-HD looks white as a sheet

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals , Motorola The follow-on to Motorola's sporty and moderately popular (for a stereo bluetooth headset, anyway) S9 may not have launched yet -- a disappointment, considering the original plan for a Q2 release when it was announced at CES -- but perhaps a little last-minute paint job was the reason for the delay. We've now spotted the S9-HD in a bright white getup with blue accents, a far cry from the black of the model shown at CES (and presumably still slated for launch) or the red of the original, but let's not kid ourselves: this one has a way better chance of finding its way into an ear canal or two. Hopefully we'll see it within a few weeks -- just in time for a successor to be launched at CES 2009, no doubt. Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Venturi Mini uses lots of RF to get music from phone to car stereo

Filed under: Multimedia , Accessories We've seen more efficient ways of piping tunes from phones to stereos, but admittedly, they usually involve a wire or two. The Venturi Mini, now being offered by Verizon Wireless, performs the wondrous feat of receiving music streamed to it via stereo Bluetooth and relaying it on to your car's head unit by way of FM transmitter, making the whole process completely wire-free. "But wait," as they say in the industry, "that's not all." The cigarette lighter socket-powered device doubles as a handsfree that cleverly pauses your music when the time comes to take a call. Grab the multitalented wonder now for $129.99 -- and if you live in Washington or Oregon , the sooner, the better. [Via MobileBurn ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Hands-on with Motorola's S9-HD stereo Bluetooth headset

Filed under: Features , Multimedia , Peripherals , Accessories As mentioned a couple days ago, Motorola pushed out a pretty minor revision to its S9 stereo Bluetooth wraparound headset. We bumped into one while wandering the booth and snapped a few pics of it before it wandered away. First impressions -- without actually using it, cause, that's kinda gross -- are that physically, it looks just about identical to the previous effort with the small exception of the minor visible changes to the buds. %Gallery-13231% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • The Etymotic etyBlu: a less ridiculous looking successor to the ety8?

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals If you want a pair of true, in-ear buds without the muss and fuss of wires, your options are limited and you need to be prepared to make some sacrifices. One such sacrifice that needs to be heavily weighed into the equation, for example, is your desire to appear as though there is a pair of black Duplo blocks hanging out of your ears. That's exactly the curse of Etymotic's ety8 , a decent set of stereo Bluetooth 'phones (we've tried them, they're comfortable and sound great) that were irreparably damaged by the ugly stick somewhere during the course of their development. The high-end headphone outfit has another Bluetooth product in the works, though -- the ER-89 "etyBlu" just hit the FCC's wires, giving us hope that they heard our complaints loud and clear and have worked to make their kit just a little less embarrassing to wear in public. We couldn't find conclusive evidence in the documentation that we're looking at a stereo headset here; theoretically, it could just be a mono product for calls, but we're encouraged by a brief mention of listening to music (who wants to blast tunes into one ear?) and the fact that the ety8's model number is ER-88. Can anyone make out what's going on in this FCC label diagram here? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Belkin and Kodak trot out cameraphone-friendly Bluetooth adapter

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals While there's certainly no shortage of ways to get your photos off your cameraphone and onto your PC, Belkin and Kodak seem to think they've got a better way of doing things, with the pair now rolling out a new Bluetooth adapter / software combo that promises to make things even easier. The key to that, it seems, is Kodak's Picture Upload Technology software, which will apparently automatically pull images off your phone whenever you walk within range of the adapter. Unfortunately, it seems that only XP or Vista users will be able to take advantage of the software, but if that's not a deal-breaker for you, you should be able to get your hands on the bundle now for $50. • Broadcom intros inexpensive "3G phone on a chip" solution

Filed under: Multimedia , Others , Misc Broadcom sure has been on a roll of late, introducing the feature-packed VideoCore III multimedia processor earlier this month and following it with the "world's first 3G phone on a chip" solution. The BCM21551 baseband chip was developed on a single, low-power 65-nanometer CMOS die and features Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, FM radio, an FM transmitter, support for up to five-megapixel cameras, 30fps TV out and "advanced multimedia processing." Notably, you won't find integrated WiFi or GPS, but it does play nice with HSUPA, HSDPA, WCDMA and EDGE cellular protocols. Best of all, this system-on-a-chip is available now to "early access customers," and the low, low $23 pricetag (when purchased in bulk, of course) is music to our ears. • Yamaha's NX-B02 Bluetooth speaker system hits the FCC

Filed under: Multimedia Don't look now, but a forthcoming Bluetooth speaker system from Yamaha has been discovered thanks to the oh-so-disclosing FCC. This unit touts a sleek, portable design, top-mounted controls, a pair of 45-millimeter Ti-cone full-range drivers, a 3.5-millimeter input jack, support for Bluetooth 2.0+EDR / A2DP, 12 total watts of amplification, frequency response of 90Hz to 20kHz, AC / battery power options, and a snazzy status indicator LED for good measure. 'Course, we've no idea how soon Yamaha plans to launch this here gizmo nor how much it'll cost, but feel free to click on through for a shot of the top. • Jabra's BT8040 Bluetooth headset syncs to multiple devices

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals Hot on the heels of BlueAnt's Z9 comes a new one from Jabra , and while this Bluetooth earpiece doesn't strike us as revolutionary in the design department, it does add a bit of flexibility not often found on similar alternatives. Beyond the obligatory voice dialing, handsfree profile support, A2DP compatibility, USB connectivity, DSP noise reduction, and automatic volume adjustment, the BT8040 sports Multi-point technology that enables it to sync to two devices simultaneously. Yes, this does mean that you can pretend to be listening to your kvetching sibling whilst actually taking in your favorite jam from your BT-enabled audio source. No word just yet on price nor availability, but we can imagine multitaskers everywhere lining up for this one. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Meizu M8 gets unwelcome price hike, dodgy release details

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Others Sure hope you weren't counting on getting your palms around Meizu 's oh-so-familiar M8 anytime soon, as it now looks like the handset may not even be available to purchase until mid-next year. Granted, the 667MHz CPU, 128MB of RAM, GSM connectivity, 3.4-inch VGA touchscreen, video output, and built-in Bluetooth 2.0 / WiFi sure are appealing, but those still willing to wait this one out will apparently be paying even more than previously expected. The latest on the street pegs the forthcoming 8GB iteration at around $400, but if money ain't a thang, you may as well continue on pinching those pennies for the 16GB (and potentially 3G-enabled) flavor . • OINA bringing lossless audio to Bluetooth devices

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals , Software Audiophiles hoping to get a bit more clarity out of those Bluetooth cans can officially get excited, as Open Interface North America (OINA) has just announced plans to introduce a new lossless codec for stereo audio known as SOUNDabout Lossless. Unsurprisingly, the firm is keeping its secrets on the DL for now, but recent demonstrations showed that it will have a latency as low as two-milliseconds and never exceed ten-milliseconds. Additionally, power consumption was intentionally kept low in order to preserve that precious battery life, and just in case you couldn't guess, it'll only stream properly with Bluetooth 2.0 gizmos. Sadly, there's no firm dates to mark on your calendar just yet, but the company is currently estimating that the codec will be ready to rock in detail never before heard over BT "as early as 2008." • Philips BTM-630 Bluetooth music system hits the FCC

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals , Misc We first heard of Philip's BTM-630 Bluetooth music system when it was announced alongside a number of other Bluetooth-equipped systems last month , but it looks like it's just now passed through the FCC's all-important hands, making it one step closer to landing in yours. In case you missed it, this one not only packs an iPod dock, but a built-in CD burner and Bluetooth compatibility to let grab songs from any Bluetooth-equipped cellphone or make some hands-free calls. Those looking for some slightly less glamorous shots of the device can get their fix after the break, while the truly curious can hit up the link below for some shots of the system's innards, along with the complete users manual (all courtesy of our friends at the FCC).
