  • Get your iTunes on: BlackBerry Media Sync now available

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , RIM The thoroughly-discussed, briefly-available conduit betwixt the realms of RIM and Apple, BlackBerry Media Sync, is now available in a totally official capacity for your downloading pleasure. Owners of Pearls , Curves , and 8800s (and pretty much everything that's released out of Waterloo from here on out, we'd imagine, starting with the Bold ) can now snag music and playlists right off iTunes, though DRM'd tracks are naturally off limits. Then again, aren't BlackBerry owners too busy having power lunches, signing contracts, picking out new suits, and generally being important to enjoy trivialities like music on the road? • BlackBerry Media Sync for iTunes makes all-too-brief appearance

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , RIM We've known for a while that support for iTunes synchronization (songs, artwork, playlists, the whole nine yards) would be coming to the BlackBerry platform, and very briefly last week, RIM unleashed that capability on the world. It's unclear why the software was pulled -- maybe it just wanted to release the software to more fanfare, maybe it was buggier than a standing pool of swamp water -- but either way, BlackBerry users desperate to get their sync on should still be able to nab the goods from a number of mirrors hosted by vigilant (and quick-thinking) users around the world while we wait for RIM to decide when to introduce it again. • Flickr mobile photo uploader comes to BlackBerry

Filed under: Moblogs , Multimedia , Software , RIM Not even a month after RIM let loose details on the forthcoming Media Sync application comes yet another piece of software sure to keep your thumbs even closer to your BlackBerry. Available now, the free Flickr mobile photo uploader enables BB owners to snap photos and easily upload 'em to their Flickr account -- something (almost) everyone else has been doing for quite some time . Heck, you can even slot an image in a given album, tag it and adjust its size right on your handset; if you're rocking a mobile with GPS, geotagging is an option, too. • Hands-on with the BlackBerry flavor of SlingPlayer Mobile

Filed under: Features , Multimedia , Software , RIM There's still not a solid word on when BlackBerry users across the lands will be able to exchange a small sum of currency for their own license of this thing , but we're happy to report that Sling's BlackBerry player was on full display at CTIA -- and it's looking very good. WiFi or 3G is obviously recommended for best performance, but Sling was using EDGE in lieu of a solid WiFi connection at the show and we were pleasantly surprised at the goodness of the video quality. There are still a couple bugs to work out, but it's definitely on the right path, and we'd be shocked if it wasn't out in the wild within a few months. Go get 'em, Sling! %Gallery-19896% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

  • Puretracks DRM-free music store hitting BlackBerry platform in April

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , RIM For BlackBerry users feeling a bit left out of the mobile music store revolution , take heart, as Puretracks is running to the rescue. Utilizing the spotlight at SXSW in Texas, the aforementioned outfit is showcasing its newly developed, DRM-free music store and service for the BlackBerry platform. Reportedly, the system was crafted with partner Magnet Mobile Media, and it's slated to function on the Pearl, Curve and 8800 series mobiles. As of now, we've no idea how much the tunes will cost, but we do know that they'll be compressed AAC / AAC+ files and will be available in the US on April 1. As for future plans, the firm hopes to bring the service to Canada and "other markets," and best of all, it's even looking to "include support for WiFi capable handsets." • RIM patent locks down cameras the old fashioned way: with a key

Filed under: Multimedia , RIM Many businesses bristle at the thought of intellectual property being whisked away from their premises via camera -- a fear that becomes ever more realistic as cameraphones jump from 1 to 2, 3, or 5 megapixels -- and perhaps no phone manufacturer is more in tune to the needs of those suits than RIM. Sure enough, the BlackBerry people have come to the table with a rather unusual patent application to address the problem. Rather than remove cameras entirely a la 8800 series, they're proposing the use of a removable key to prevent the camera from being used. Insert the key, the cam works like a champ; pull it, it goes dead. Because, you know, that obviously can't be circumvented in any way. • Sling announces SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , RIM Windows Mobile: check . Palm OS: check . S60: yep . So what's the giant, gaping hole left in Sling's coverage of mobile clients? BlackBerry, of course, and the company has finally confirmed what we already sorta knew -- that a SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is officially in the works. Sling will be demonstrating its latest client at CES on a Pearl 8120 , utilizing its WiFi connection (though 3G will work just as well) to stream down an endless barrage of mind-numbing content from the Slingbox of your choice. Look for it to show up on a BlackBerry near you "later this year" for a shade under $30. Hop on over to Engadget for a quick hands-on with the goods! • Blockbuster in talks with mobile makers for video on the go

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia Apparently Blockbuster Video is wooing mobile device makers in an attempt to make mobile video content consumption a little easier on the consumers. While no names were specifically mentioned, Blockbuster CEO James Keyes did say that they were in talks with virtually all major handset manufacturers. We've no clue how the vids will be delivered if this gets off the ground, but wouldn't be too averse to downloading flicks on the device if the file size -- and data tariffs -- could be kept sane. Mr Keyes went on to say that he's started watching films on his BlackBerry thanks to a little technical help from a Blockbuster employee and from Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of Research in Motion. Of course, we're sure the technical help mentioned didn't have anything to do with DVD Decrypter and the illegal copying of DVDs , right guys? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint BlackBerry Pearl to support Sprint TV?

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , RIM , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA It appears that Sprint has let the bag again and allowing some clever readers to comb through the same spec sheet . It looks like Sprint will launch the BlackBerry 8130 supporting both their Mobile TV and Music Store services. Nothing sounds more enticing than streaming audio and video via EV-DO on our BlackBerry . Now only if Sprint can get their mobile TV offerings in line with VCast TV or maybe Verizon will follow suit and enable another Smartphone for their music service. • RIM's BlackBerry Desktop Media Manager released

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , RIM As RIM moves ever more into the consumer spectrum of wireless handsets, it's gotta have media software for the desktop to help manage all that content. BlackBerry Desktop Media Manager (BBDMM) is supposed to solve that problem, seeing as songs, videos and pictures can be managed in a single place. So, if you're not happy with all the other media management software packages out there, RIM may have your ticket. Well, at least the ticket that allows content drag-and-drop to your BlackBerry, that is. The newest version of BlackBerry Desktop Media Manager requires BlackBerry Desktop software v4.2 , Service Pack 2. In short, better get that desktop in order (version-wise) before you start managing all that content destined to make its way to your BlackBerry soon. Since the new BBDMM is based on Roxio Easy Media Creator, it should feel like home to prior or existing Roxio customers. [Thanks, Eddie] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
