  • Apple working on streaming your iTunes library to your iPhone?

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Peripherals , Apple Apple's experimented with allowing iTunes to stream over the internet as well as your LAN in the past and quickly removed the feature (probably due to RIAA pressure), so we're not placing too much stock in this, but AppleInsider's unearthed a patent that seems to describe a way to stream music over the 'net to your iPhone / iPod touch. The goal is to prevent you from having to selectively sync content to your device -- instead, you'd sync just the metadata and stream whatever you wanted direct from your machine as though it was all stored locally. There are some obvious problems here -- it wouldn't work if you didn't have service (or over EDGE, really), most home upstream connections aren't that fast, etc., etc., -- but it's certainly interesting, and a welcome addition to local storage if it ever makes the scene. In the meantime, how about working in some of those new UI elements from the Remote app into the iPod app? [Via Macrumors , thanks Mark] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Jobs: App Store launching with 500 iPhone applications, 25% free

Filed under: Multimedia , Apple var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Jobs_App_Store_launching_with_500_iPhone_apps_25_free'; Steve Jobs told USA Today that the Apple App Store will launch with "more than 500" applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less. "This is the biggest launch of my career," said Jobs. Analyst Tim Bajarin at Creative Strategies said, "When IBM introduced the PC, it was good, but it didn't take off until people started discovering the software." It's these apps then, he adds, that will "dramatically differentiates the iPhone" from Treos and BlackBerrys. Indeed, while consumers are focused on the launch of the iPhone 3G device, it's the App Store which has analysts in such a tizzy. Update : The New York Times reports that 1/3 of all first-wave applications will be games. We also corrected the Bajarin misquote above. • iPhone roundup: iTunes remote, Apple ready for real software in the App Store

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , Apple , OS X Who would've thought that rumored iControl app would not only turn out to be real, but survive the inevitable internal politics, delays, and feature cutbacks to make it all the way through to a summer release? Sure enough, iTunes 7.7 has been pushed out to developers in the past several hours, and the installer encourages iPhone and iPod touch owners to "use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home -- a free download from the App Store." No further details are given -- and it's not clear whether the "iControl" name seen earlier has been scrapped altogether -- but we can guess that it'll use WiFi to hook up with your mainframe, which really makes the idea of an AirPort Express appealing all over again. On another note, Apple has released Beta 8 of the iPhone SDK and is using the occasion to kick off acceptances of applications to the real, live App Store in preparation for its July 11 launch. It appears that Beta 8 is actually required to complete the process, so don't go jumping the gun now -- goodness knows the rest of the iPhone-toting world doesn't want your half-baked apps in a couple weeks, you shady developer, you. • Mixmeister Scratch brings scratching to the iPhone, vinyl still cooler

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , Apple , OS X Among the items on the miles-long list of things made better (or at least more interesting) with a capacitive touchscreen, virtual vinyl scratching and beat juggling has to be somewhere on there. Physical records have a certain sexiness that'll carry on for many years to come, but you've gotta admit that there's an appeal to whipping out a couple iPhones (or iPod touches, if that's how you roll), plugging them in, and having an instant set of turntables at your disposal. We're not quite there yet, but MixMeister has taken the first step with a rudimentary scratch app that comes with a set of funky fresh samples and will also work with any music already loaded on your device. It's not released yet, but it looks like when it is, it'll work with all firmware versions -- jailbroken ones, we presume. Follow the break for a video demo. • BCC iPlayer comes to iPhone, not as interesting as originally thought

Filed under: Multimedia , Apple After a groundswell of hype that the rumored BBC iPlayer for the iPhone might be some crazy, Apple co-developed, SDK-usin' piece of kit, the reality is just a little underwhelming. Fact is, yes, the BBC-only streaming app has migrated to the iPhone -- but it's built entirely on the handset's existing technology stack, prior to the SDK announcement . Ah well, it's probably just as well considering that the content available on the beta-quality player is limited at the moment, and let's be honest: they're gonna need 3G to really rock, anyway. • Nokia cordially invites Apple to join Ovi

Filed under: Multimedia , Nokia , Apple Don't hold your breath, guys! A Nokia board member has gone on the record saying that the "door is open" to Apple to join its Ovi initiative -- a collection of multimedia-centric services delivered directly to handsets through a portal app -- by adding iTunes into the mix. Of course, Nokia has its own Music Store , a direct competitor to iTunes -- but in the bigger scheme of things, it's hard to argue against the clout (Nokia calls it "enrichment" for its customers) that the largest digital music store in the world brings to the table. We suspect that Nokia's recent ribbing of the iPhone (not to mention that these two giants are sworn enemies on several levels, or the fact that Apple is one of the less cooperative companies in the biz) will probably put the kibosh on any possible deal, but it's all good, Nokia; you just keep on keepin' on with that iPhone of your own and roll deep with your own store. • Control your entire house with your iPhone or iPod Touch

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Peripherals , Software , Misc , Apple , OS X The dream of an automated house has never been more achievable, and thanks to DIY software like Cinemar's Mainlobby, just about anyone can roll their own at a reasonable price. Of course, the more you can control with your home automation system the better. Now, in addition to being able to control lighting, security, home theater gear, thermostats, whole house audio and manage all your movies from a wall mounted touch screen, Mainlobby owners will soon be able to use their iPod Touch or iPhone as a remote. The key to making this work is Mainlobby's built in web server and Safari's extensive AJAX support -- sorry Windows Mobile fans. Unfortunately, this is only a first look, but these examples will be included in future versions of MLServer. And considering the lead developer on the project plans to use it as his " primary handheld controller," it should mean lots of future development. More pictures after the jump. Just create a Bookmark that points to your MLServer web server. Browse your movie collection All the details of the movies at your finger tips, just hit play to have DVDLobby control your 400 disc DVD changer or play a movie from your hard drive. • Orb reportedly set to announce support for iPhone, iPod touch

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , Apple Not that it comes as a huge surprise given the wide array of devices it already supports, but according to The Register, Orb is apparently set to finally get official with its support of both the iPhone and the iPod touch "in the next few days." As with other devices, that'll let you get in a little place-shifting with the aid of the iPhone's browser, including letting access your music collection via the Orb-powered version of Winamp . On the iPhone, you'll also have the added benefit of being able to send links to songs in an SMS chat session. Of course, just 'cause it's not official doesn't mean you make use of Orb in its current state which, for all we know, could be exactly what's in store when Orb does make things official. • iPhone hacked to control Pro Tools

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Apple This one might only be interesting to the musicians out there, but anyone's who's ever struggled to control Pro Tools while trying to lay down tracks will definitely be interested in Alex le Lievre's slick iPhone / iPod touch control surface app. The utility connects over WiFi to a server program and MIDI controller on your audio workstation, and allows you to remotely control Pro Tools using the iPhone's multitouch interface, all while reflecting levels and automated fades in real time. Alex says he plans to sell the app once the official SDK hits in February -- here's hoping his target audience doesn't mind all that GSM noise the iPhone generates. Check a vid of the app in action after the break. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Apple planning iPhone SDK for February!

Filed under: Games , Handsets , Multimedia , Software , Apple , OS X var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Apple_planning_iPhone_SDK_for_February'; Well, would you look at that. Apple apparently wants third party applications on the iPhone and iPod touch just like every other sane individual on the planet. The company just announced on its Hot News feed (and we'd say this certainly qualifies as such), that it is currently at work on an SDK for the iPhone, the apps from which will naturally work on the iPod touch. Apparently it's going to take 'em until February to do it up right -- you know, secure and stable and all that nonsense -- but this is certainly a beautiful breath of fresh air. Less excitingly, Apple claims that it agrees with Nokia's approach of "digital signatures" for applications, meaning that Apple gets to say who qualifies for entrance onto its hallowed devices as was rumored last week ; though who's to say what exactly that will look like just yet. But even with that caveat, we suppose we should take what we get from this sometimes benevolent, but never aesthetically challenged, dictator of ours and eat it like we're told. • WebApps library launched for Apple's iPhone / iPod touch

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Software , Apple , OS X Folks hoping that Apple would be so kind as to allow developers to craft their own 3rd party applications and have Cupertino accept 'em with open arms can now commence sulking, as a new WebApps directory unveiled today by Apple is nothing more than a dressed up version of Apple's bookmark list. Essentially, Apple has neatly brought together a selection of company-approved apps ( listed here ) that should function fine in Safari, but alas, there's absolutely no new functionality. So although iPod touch / iPhone users now have a central hub to go to for links to web applets, Apple is still leaving us high and dry when it comes to native 3rd party application support outside of its browser. • V-MODA re-ups Vibe Duo headset for iPhone with music control

Filed under: Multimedia , Apple , Accessories Anyone who's been repeatedly reaching for a iPod remote control clipped to their wardrobe while using their iPhone -- only to discover that it doesn't exist -- will be delighted to hear that V-MODA has revamped its Vibe Duo headset to add integrated music control. The control button, which seems to be positioned and operated the same way as the one on the iPhone's bundled headset, can be used to fiddle with calls as well as tunes. It's not quite the four or five button set we'd like to be able to track forward, back, play, pause, and change volume, but considering that the iPhone lacks a control socket beside its jack, we'll take what we can get. Get the updated 'phones now for the same $99 as the original. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
