  • AT&T talks about linking iPhone with U-verse, home control

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Software , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Misc , Apple , OS X We've already seen that Apple's iPhone is a mighty fine home controller , but it looks as if AT&T bigwigs are just now getting wind of that. At a recent event where the company showcased some of its newly developed technology, it talked up eventually linking the iPhone and its fiber-based U-verse service. More specifically, the iPhone could be used "as a remote control," and iPhone owners could also listen to voicemails on their television or watch recorded shows on their handset. There's no word on when said features could eventually be rolled out, but may we implore AT&T to spend more on U-verse expansion before making it even more awesome for those lucky enough to have it? • BMW warms up to Apple's iPhone

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Nearly three years ago to the day, BMW announced that you could " iPod your BMW ." Today, that same luxury is being passed onto Apple's latest handheld device. According to an admittedly brief introduction page at BMW, the automaker has proclaimed that it is indeed the first to ensure that iPhone owners can look forward to seamless integration of music playback and handsfree Bluetooth calling "across its model line." Beginning today, BMW whips equipped with BMW Assist with Bluetooth can enjoy handsfree calling in their ride, and those with the iPod / USB interface can control the iPod functions of the iPhone via built-in vehicle controls and view the track / album information on your radio (or navigation system, we presume). BMW notes that "further details" will be available soon, and with any luck, a few more automakers will follow suit in the near future. • iPhone ain't even an iPod without service

Filed under: Multimedia , ATT , Apple It's unclear what technical limitation prevents Apple from allowing the iPhone to function as an iPod without an active AT&T service plan tied to it, because we really ( really ) want to believe the companies wouldn't arbitrarily disable a feature to keep the cash flow rolling in. • YouTube hits Apple TV today, headed for the iPhone as well

Filed under: Multimedia , Software , ATT , Apple The wait is over, and you can finally train that Apple Remote of yours on videos of passable karaoke, mind numbing video blog confessions and the genius that is Daxflame. That's right, YouTube is hitting the Apple TV today, an announcement that is totally overshadowed by a little surprise Apple packed into the press release: YouTube is the iPhone mystery app. Sure, it might not be GPS or anything useful like that, but Apple seems to be aware of our addiction and is happy to oblige. YouTube videos can be viewed through an Apple-built application on the phone, and will be encoded in H.264 by YouTube to improve video quality and battery life on mobile devices. They'll have 10,000 videos ready by June 29th, and should complete transcoding the collection by this fall. Videos can be viewed over WiFi or EDGE, we don't want to even imagine the painful load times of the latter.
