  • TracFone's $45 Straight Talk unlimited plan punishes you with brutal hardware

Filed under: LG , Motorola , CDMA They say "there's no such thing as a free lunch." They also say "there's no such thing as an unlimited contract-free $45 monthly unlimited plan that offers awesome phones," so we're not terribly surprised to see that TracFone's new blowout offering -- dubbed Straight Talk -- is rife with ancient Motorolas (with a RAZR V3a thrown in for good measure, of course) and an LG flip that we're pretty sure we saw McClane use in the first Die Hard. Then again, the plan becomes the one of the cheapest for unlimited voice and text anywhere -- and if you're less heavy on the minutes you can even step down to 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts for $30 -- so we'll let it slide. But seriously, TracFone, we expect a V9 by 2012. • Motorola Q9h Running Windows Mobile 6.5 Caught on Video

Two minutes of blurtastic video have bubbled up which give a basic tour of Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard running on a Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Q9h. One would easily expect that the newer Windows Mobile handsets are built with 6.5 in mind, but it’s great to see even older hardware can handle the new OS, too. [...]
  • Motorola's Aura Celestial Edition soon taking "giant leaps" for "mankind"

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Here's a fact: the world really doesn't need another mildly tweaked Aura . Sorry, it just doesn't. That being true and all, we're still pretty jazzed to see Motorola giving the ultra-luxurious handset another go with the moon-themed Celestial Edition. Word on the street has it that this here handset won't deviate much from the predecessor , but it will come pre-loaded with multimedia from the original moon landing mission, a laser etched quote honoring the 40th anniversary of the journey and a price tag that's far, far beyond stratospheric. We're told that it's all set to go on sale next month, but good luck finding one. • Microsoft's "Pink" smartphone to be Microsoft-branded?

Filed under: Handsets , Windows Mobile , Danger Ready for even more rumors about Windows Mobile 7 and Microsoft's mysterious "Pink" smartphone project? Good, cause we've got a few -- and the first is potentially huge. CNET's Mary Jo Foley says her best understanding of "Pink" is now that it's a Microsoft-branded phone running a custom UI on top of Windows Mobile 7, developed by what's left of the Danger team and targeted at the Sidekick market. Yep, Microsoft-branded -- as in, the exact thing Microsoft has been denying for ages now. What's more, Redmond wouldn't be letting third parties use this new UI -- Pink would be manufactured only by Sharp or Motorola, who've made Sidekicks in the past. It all makes sense, even if it does feel a bit like MS is knifing its partners in the back -- companies like HTC and Samsung have been equally aggressive in layering their own UIs like TouchFLO 3D and TouchWiz on top of WinMo, but it's another thing entirely to compete against Microsoft itself, especially now that AdWeek says Microsoft's selected an agency to develop a Pink ad campaign. Yeah, things are starting to get a little wild -- we haven't even mentioned the open questions of whether the Zune HD is running Tegra because it's based on Windows Mobile 7 Chassis 1 , or whether Pink will launch on Verizon , or whether Zune will appear on other phones , or... you get the idea. Hey Microsoft -- you want to clear any of this up by shipping some products? • Motorola Aura “Celestial Edition” celebrates 40th anniversary of the moon landing

None of you are going to buy this phone and I’m only writing about it to hit my post quota for the month so I can get a paycheck that will help feed my alcoholic tendencies and hedonistic weekends. With that nugget of knowledge out of the way, let it soak in for a moment [...]
  • Motorola may aim for mid-range market with Android

Motorola has wagered much of its handset division's future on Google's Android platform, but its strategy may not include making a big splash in the high-end smartphone segment when it debuts its Android phones later this year. Instead, to reverse slumping market share and plummeting revenues, Motorola may focus on the mid- and low-range of the phone market with its forthcoming Android devices. "There's a lot of competition in the high-end category and not a big movement to address the lower price points," Avian Securities analyst Matt Thornton told BusinessWeek . "It's a smart move. Motorola needs to be more near-term and start making some money." Even mid-range smartphone sales could boost Motorola's margins. Barclays Capital analyst Jeff Kvaal told BusinessWeek that he estimates that Motorola's new smartphones could boost the company's overall average selling price for handsets to $147 in the fourth quarter, up from $123 in the first quarter. According to Kvaal, Android launches could grow Motorola volumes by 20 percent to 70 million units next year. Motorola declined to comment to BusinessWeek about its Android plans. It appears that Motorola's efforts are bearing fruit. According to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal , T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless will launch Motorola-made Android phones before the end of the year, news that dovetails with comments Motorola executives made earlier this year. In late April, Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said the company would have Android devices on the market by the end of the year with multiple carriers, and not just in North America. "We are in detailed discussion with multiple carriers around the world," Jha, the head of Motorola's mobile devices division, said at the time. "It won't be one carrier in one region. It will be multiple carriers in multiple regions." • Sprint follows Boost, gets Motorola Clutch i465 this summer

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Sprint , iDEN Sprint subsidiary Boost Mobile got first dibs, but now it's the parent's turn -- which means Sprint proper will be taking delivery of the Motorola Clutch i465 for its Direct Connect iDEN network this summer. No exact release date was given, but interest parties are welcome to sign up now to be informed when they can drop the cash -- $39.99 on contract, to be exact, after the application of a total of $70 in rebates on a new two-year agreement. The little beast gives you full QWERTY (a Motorola first for iDEN), mil-spec 810F compliance for withstanding the worst you can throw at it, Bluetooth, GPS, and a VGA camera that isn't likely to win you any photography awards. Of course, if you want it that badly, you could just make the leap to Boost today -- but otherwise, stay tuned.
