  • Anchor Alert - semi-useful GPS app to ‘anchor’ your phone

Any app whose description begins “AnchorAlert checks how far your vessel has drifted from its anchor point and sounds an alarm when the value exceeds the specified distance.” would usually garner a solid “Eh?” Looking a bit closer, though, it does what it says on the tin and is actually quite clever - if of limited [...]

  • Motorola patent application shows foldable/rollable display/keyboard

Flexible displays and devices are the future. Rollable e-ink newspapers, flexible displays , we’ll be seeing a lot of them in the coming years. And, following on that READIUS foldable mobile device from Polymer Vision, an older Motorola patent application regarding a flexible display/keyboard has surfaced. Motorola’s taking the whole “flexible” idea to the next level. Not only is the display flexible/rollable, the keyboard rolls up with display as well. Since a rollable display does little good when the keyboard is as stiff as the stick keeping Steve Ballmer’s backside nice and rigid, Motorola has devised a method whereby the keyboard portion of the device is filled with an electrorheological fluid (a fluid that becomes semi-solid when an electrical current is applied to it) - allowing it to fold up along with the display. When an electrical current is passed through the keyboard (presumably when the keyboard has been unrolled), the fluid materializes into a temporary keyboard. Stop the flow of electricity, and the keyboard reverts back to its fluidic state. Genius. The flexible portion of the device will be housed in a rigid casing, but with the benefit of having a flexible display and keyboard, the casing need not be much bigger than a box of matches (in other words, really, really small). • Migrate data from your old phone to your iPhone with Fone2Phone

Smartphones are more like super-portable, mini-computers than standalone handsets these days. But, what good is all that computing power if you can’t make use of all your old data? If you’ve managed to amass a veritable cornucopia of contacts, playlists, events, tasks, notes, movies, songs, etc. on your old smartphone (or not-so-smart-phone), then it can be a daunting proposition to transfer all that information to your new iPhone. Why not have Nova Media’s Fone2Phone application handle all that busy-work for you? Fone2Phone will take your Nokia, Motorola, or Sony Ericsson phone and download all those contacts, events, tasks, notes, bookmarks, photos, music and videos at the click of a button. “Fone2Phone will add the new content to your applications: as Address Book group, iCal calendar, iTunes playlist, iTunes movies, iPhoto album, bookmark and notes.” Sound interesting? Nova Media will be launching Fone2Phone on January 14th for $19. Just in time for MacWorld Expo. Check Nova Media’s website for their list of supported phones. • Unlock your Samsung BlackJack II's integrated GPS receiver to work outside of TeleNav

The good news is that the new Samsung BlackJack II will be rocking a full-fledged SiRF III GPS receiver - none of that cell-tower signal triangulation stuff here. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the GPS hardware in the BlackJack II is locked-down to only work with the bundled TeleNav software (AT&T’s way of getting more TeleNav revenue). You see, there’s this driver, called GPS Intermediary Driver (GPSID), that Microsoft uses to serve as the communications middle-man between the GPS hardware and applications that need to access the hardware. While the GPSID driver seems to be configured to work with the TeleNav software and Windows Live Search, there’s no provision for any other application to make use of the SiRF III GPS module. Well, BlackJack 2 hopefuls will be glad to hear that the MoDaCo Smartphone GPS Activator will open up the GPS hardware on your Samsung BlackJack II (and probably the Motorola Q9h ) to a host of GPS-enabled applications. The MoDaCo hack will open up the COM4 port for GPS access, allowing you to use associate your favorite apps like Virtual Mobile Earth or Google Maps with the GPS unit. Turns out, the MoDaCo Smartphone GPS Activator also Application Unlocks your Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard handset. That means you can re-order the applications on your Start Menu - bonus! Oh, and if any Motorola Q9h owners out there want to give this utility a go, please drop us a line and let us know how it works. • Microsoft launches System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 - pushing mobile enterprise mobile to the edge

So, we’re here at CTIA San Francisco 2007 and the first thing on our agenda was the Microsoft launch luncheon (try saying that three times, fast). Here’s what they’ve got planned… In keeping with the Microsoft’s expertise in enterprise mobile solutions, Microsoft has launched their first “dedicated mobile device management server” - Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. And, to help roll-out device compatibility with the Mobile Device Manager, Microsoft has teamed up with AT&T and Sprint to bring Microsoft has keyed in on the business customer’s needs beyond the realm of simple email, contact management, and calendar sync-ing. They’re leveraging the Windows Mobile platform to bring a new level of integration and user-level management to the enterprise IT professional. With features like over-the-air application delivery and secure VPN connectivity, the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 aims to ensure that fleet-management of Windows Mobile devices maintains “end-to-end data integrity” as well as providing secure access to corporate data - in other words, Windows Mobile device fleets can all be updated and synchronized with ease and allow user-corporate VPN connection under the watchful eye of the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Center 2008. IT heads will be happy to hear that the new Mobile Device Center will employ an “always on” connection - affording them the control they need to maintain and ensure fleet integrity. Should the “always on” connection drop-out, Microsoft’s “fast reconnect” technology gets the user securely back online without having to re-authenticate. And, if the IT department sees a problem with any device in their fleet, System Center Mobile Device Manager provides the IT Administrator with the power to lock down a specific handset - they can disable Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, WLAN (WiFi), InfraRed, POP/IMAP...
