  • Motorola QA4 Halo outed by Bluetooth SIG, early details begin to flow

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , EV-DO , CDMA If there were two entities we just couldn't do without, they'd certainly be the FCC and Bluetooth SIG. The latest handset to be revealed courtesy of the latter is Motorola's QA4 Halo, and thanks to a particularly insightful individual over at HoFo , we've even got a few purported details to pore over. We're told to expect a 2.8-inch 400 x 240 resolution (touchscreen?) display, a 2-megapixel camera, a microSD card slot, USB 2.0, a CDMA / EV-DO radio, customizable widgets, Bluetooth 2.0 and a built-in accelerometer. Alright Moto, the secret's out -- how's about an official release? • Motorola VE240 officially coming to Cricket, MetroPCS

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , CDMA As we'd heard back in August , the scrappy little VE240 candybar from Moto is destined for a pair of regionals -- Cricket and MetroPCS. It's got stereo Bluetooth, MP3 support, expandable memory up to 4GB, and that's about it; nothing to get terribly excited about, but the light spec sheet should keep things affordable. It's available now in Cricket's Tulsa market with wider availability coming to both carriers in the next few weeks. • Sprint won't let Nextel iDEN network chirp its last chirp, plans rejuvenation effort

Filed under: Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA , Misc We've seen some pretty wild on-again / off-again relationships in the scandalous world of gadget affairs, but this one has been swinging from one extreme to the other at breakneck pace. Let's recap: after proclaiming that it was absolutely committed to iDEN in February of 2008, rumors then started flying that Sprint was looking to offload the whole thing and move on with life. A month later, the carrier's CEO practically confirmed that an iDEN network sale was still an option. Now, the seemingly bipolar company has issued a press release reaffirming its adoration for the chirping-est network this side of Oz, stating that "after careful review of the iDEN business, Sprint intends to retain and rejuvenate this important asset." Which could be PR speak for "nobody wanted this thing, so what other option did we really have?" Regardless of the truth, it seems the push-to-talk network that just won't die will live to see another day, but as history has shown, all that could change in a split second (or at Sprint Speed, whichever you prefer). • Motorola Krave ZN4 review roundup

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA We had a feeling we'd get a mixed bag of reviews as soon as we first saw the Motorola Krave ZN4 -- it's one of those love it or hate it type things, you know? In some cases, reviewers chose to focus on the positives, noting that it was cute, unique, a good music player and a phone that would last and last without a recharge. Another batch of critics couldn't hold back the whip, pointing out that it lacked WiFi, packed a lackluster browser, included yawn-worthy software and offered a keyboard that was "straight-up awkward." As expected, overall ratings hovered between just below average to just above average, and it seems this phone will be exactly what you make it out to be. Moto fans will likely have plenty to cheer about, but those without a dog in the fight may want to give the writeups below a more thorough glance before dropping $149.99 and agreeing to a super-sized 2-year commitment. • Motorola Krave ZN4 officially launches on Verizon for $149.99

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Color us as unsurprised as ever , but Motorola's unique, if not fancy, Krave ZN4 just got official. The touchscreen-based flip phone is launching today on Verizon Wireless, bringing with it two layers of touch -- one on the interactive clear flip outside and another with the full 2.8-inch touchscreen inside. You'll also find support for V CAST Mobile TV, V CAST Video, V CAST Music with Rhapsody and VZ Navigator, not to mention the 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, HTML browser and visual voicemail capabilities. It's in stores today for a buck fifty after signing away your cellular soul for two years and waiting ages for a $50 mail-in rebate to arrive in your mailbox. • Motorola's Krave ZN4 acquired, photographed

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Here on the right coast of the US of A, it's not quite October 14th . That factoid aside, someone has still managed to acquire one of Motorola's peculiar (in a good way) Krave ZN4 s from Verizon a few days in advance of its official release date. The touchscreen-heavy flip phone looks might impressive in the enviable photos waiting in the read link, and early impressions from the lucky owner assert that call quality is "very good," texting on it is a breeze and the touch response in general is quite satisfactory. For those of you passing this off as a gimmick before, see if you're still feeling the same way after having a look at the in the wild shots. • Motorola shows off femtocell-in-a-digiframe concept

Filed under: Multimedia , Peripherals , Motorola , CDMA After personally trying out Sprint's AIRAVE , we're confident that femtocells have a place in this world. Thankfully, Motorola's already trying to make them less of an eyesore by integrating a CDMA femtocell into something we wouldn't mind showing off in the den: an inconspicuous digital photo frame. The "3-in-1" concept also includes a VoIP soft phone that would theoretically enable calls to be made right from the frame. Of course, Moto's not handing out any sort of release time frame, but let us be the first to say that this thing needs to hit store shelves on the double -- just make sure it's not carrier specific, and toss in a GSM version while you're at it, okay Moto? Check out the demonstration vid after the break. [Thanks, Dave ] Continue reading Motorola shows off femtocell-in-a-digiframe concept Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Alltel adds the Motorola VE20

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Alltel , EV-DO , CDMA Alltel isn't typically the first US carrier to release much of anything, with the notable exception of Glimmer . That's alright -- coming it at number five, they probably don't have quite the sway with manufacturers that a Verizon or a Sprint does, for example -- and that'll all change soon enough anyway once the Verizon acquisition goes through. In the meantime, though, Alltel's following Sprint in its release of Motorola's VE20 , a midrange flip with an outer touchscreen, 2-megapixel cam, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It'll be available starting this Thursday for $99.99 with contract and rebate in navy and licorice, but if you're dying to get a head start, you can go ahead and preorder now. • Sprint shows fall dumbphone lineup, new "One Click" user interface

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Samsung , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Sure enough, there wasn't anything squished about the image we saw of the LG LX600 a while back -- it was just loosening the belt a couple notches to make room for a full QWERTY keyboard running across its naughty bits. Oh, and it's no longer the LX600; turns out Sprint is releasing it as the Lotus, one of four all-new dumbphones for the autumn months to complement today's announcement of the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro . It'll be available next month for $149.99 on contract. Others in the mix include the Samsung Highnote -- a music-focused dual slider that dedicates one slide direction to a hefty little loudspeaker -- and the curiously-named Rant, which apes the LG Rumor's form factor to give text addicts another affordable option. Like the Lotus, the Highnote and Rant will both hit in October for $99.99 and $49.99, respectively. Meanwhile, iDEN freaks (and we use that term in the most loving way possible) will be happy to see that they're getting their grubby, calloused hands on another rugged option, the Motorola i576 flip. It'll start getting beaten senseless at retail come October 19 for $69.99. Sprint's also using those three new consumer sets (sorry, i576) to premiere "One Click," a new UI paradigm for its non-smartphone devices that allows folks to drop all sorts of commonly-used features with information-rich icons right on the home screen for... well, one-click access, hence the name. New Katana Eclipse colors coming later this fall will feature the new software, too. • Verizon pushes Motorola ZN4 to October, Nokia 7205 to next year?

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Nokia , Samsung , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Jeebus, Nokia, what's going on with your stupid flip phone over there? Not to harsh on you too much -- we love you, really we do -- but we're not exactly talking about an N96 -caliber device here. If an updated view of Verizon's Mobile Email launches is accurate, it seems that the launch of Nokia's CDMA-equipped 7205 will now come no earlier than January of 2009, which would put it a full year after the first spy shots leaked . We also see here that LG's VX5500 and VX8360 are both tracking for late October, while the mysterious VX9600 should be hitting in November if all goes well. From Motorola, the VU30 has been pushed out to the end of this month and the MING-esque ZN4 is looking like it's trying to break out in time for Halloween. Samsung is offering the u810 global phone later on this month, while the u650 "Sway" sneaks in somewhere in October. Altogether a promising autumn for Big Red's dumbphone line -- but we've seen enough date slips at this point to be fooled into believing there won't be a few more. • New Verizon rebate forms uncover fresh Motos, Samsungs, LGs

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Samsung , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Krave? Knack? New phones listed on Verizon's latest rebate forms has us believing that we may be approaching the product marketing End Times where naming conventions reach a level of silliness never before fathomed. Take, for example, the ZN4 Krave from Motorola -- a phone previously known as the Blaze -- or the Sway and Knack from Samsung, the former being the u650 slider with a 2-megapixel camera. Why can't we just call that one "u650," Verizon? We'd be totally cool with that. Returning momentarily to the land of sanity, LG nabs the VX8360 and VX5500 on the lower end, a market segment where neither real nor made-up words bother finding their way onto the labels. Kind of refreshing, we think -- especially if the alternative is "Knack." Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Sprint outs Motorola i365 and V950 with Samsung M220, M320 -- no Touch Diamond yet

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Samsung , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Even though all signs are pointing to a release later this month, we'll admit -- we were still secretly hoping that the rumored September 2 date would somehow magically hold for Sprint's release of the Touch Diamond . Even so, the carrier is reeling in some decent -- if not totally expected -- booty today in the form of the Motorola i365 and Renegade V950 alongside Samsung's M220 and M320 flips. The i365 becomes the baddest-ass phone in Sprint's iDEN arsenal, sporting what they call a "monolith form factor" (badass speak for "candybar," we think), mil-spec everything, and GPS. As Direct Connect goes, the V950 is pretty much everything the i365 is not, eschewing iDEN for QChat and offering all the creature comforts of a modern featurephone -- music player, camera, external controls, and a pair of decent displays for starters -- and although Sprint calls this one "ultra-rugged" as well, we don't think we could heave it against a wall quite as many times as we could the i365. From Samsung, the M220 and M320 are simple 1xRTT flips with essentially the same specs as one another, though the M320 tacks on a VGA camera (so in other words, it really may as well not have a camera, either). All four handsets are available now. Read - Samsung M220, M320 Read - Motorola i365 Read - Motorola Renegade V950 Permalink | Email this | Comments
